Multiple yellow accretion marks down right edge of picture. Backing paper is almost completely torn off on the perimeter edges. Frame has multiple abrasions and chips all around frame edge. Bottom two mitre joints are separated.
Steve Repa was born in Winnipeg, MB, in 1937. After graduating from Winnipeg School of Art, he worked as a teacher of ceramics and design. He was a director of Brandon Allied Arts center in 1962 and 1963. Active in various arts organizations - founder of Art Forum, chairman for the Manitoba Art Association, Vice-President of Associated Arts of Manitoba. (1996 inventory)
John Grass 'Pizi' (1837-1918). John Grass, warrior and gifted orator was well known during reservation days as a progressive. Able to speak English and many dialects of Sioux, he was made head chief at the Standing Rock Agency, a position created by the white agent to rival the authority of Sitting Bull and unify the Agency Sioux. In later years he was credited for the success of the Commission of 1889: a session which, by the stroke of the pen, meant the end to the great Sioux Reservation. The stage has been set for the Ghost Dance uprising. Sitting Bull was killed, Wounded Knee took the lives of over 150 Sioux, and ironically John Grass helped negotiate a settlement for the survivors. Bertha Cunningham is a Western Manitoban artist who has studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts several summers and has painted in Winnipeg for periods under the guidance of members of the School of Fine Art. She paints mainly landscapes. (1969 inventory)
