Photograph shows Fred McGuinness standing next to a rack of seven antelope that are hanging from a ladder stretched between two vehicles. Rifles are nestled amongst the antelope carcasses. The hunt occured in the winter.

Following the Second World War, Canada assisted with the resettlement of Europe's homeless. Orders in Council were passed between July 1947 and October 1948 that permitted the entry of 45,000 "displaced persons," who were referred to as "New Canadians" upon their arrival. Photograph shows Fred McGuinness with Meta McCulloch, 103-year-old woman who attended Fred's Memoir Writing Workshop in Hartney, Manitoba on 22 February 2010.
On 23 September 1940, McGuinness was seriously injured in a naval accident when his ship ran aground; McGuinness’ leg was broken when the ship’s tow cable snapped and he spent the next 11 months convalescing at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. While in hospital McGuinness contracted scarlet fever and diphtheria and developed osteomyelitis as a complication of his femur facture. McGuinness returned to Winnipeg to continue his convalescence at Deer Lodge Hospital and was ultimately discharged from the navy in 1941.
