Andrew B. Pernal was born in Poland. He completed his BA at Assumption University, his MA at Windsor and his Ph.D. in Ottawa. From 1971 until 2008, he was a member of Brandon University's History Department. In 2000, he received an honourary doctorate from Zaporizhia State University in Ukraine, and following his retirement he was granted emeritus status at BU. Pernal was a member of the Parish Council of St. Hedwig's Parish, the Director of the Polish School in Brandon, and Chairman of the Polish Refugees Committee in Brandon. He and his wife Nan (nee Robertson) had a number of children, including Andrew, Stephen, Julia and Caroline. Following Pernal's retirement, the couple moved to Calgary, AB.

William Andrew "Andy" Graham was born on July 29, 1916 in the RM of North Cypress on section 14-10-15. He married Irene Ruth Caughill (1918-1979) on April 17, 1937, and together they had three children: Gwen, Betty and Joan. Andy and Ruth lived first in Carberry and then on NE 23-10-15W; Andy farmed, first in partnership with his father, and then later on his own when his father's health failed. After Ruth died, Andy married Florence (Reynolds) Elmhirst (1911-2000) in 1981. Andy Graham died in 1993.

Clifford McDonald Clarke was born on March 23, 1914 on section 8/12/29, near Elkhorn, MB. He married Margaret Eleanor Hayward (1918-2003) in 1937, and together they had four children: Larry, Donald, Rose Marie and Kaylynn. Cliffe was a farmer for many years (1937-1952) in the Mossgiel area. While in the Mossgiel district, Cliff served on the school board, was active in baseball and hockey, and was a member of the L.O.L. lodge. Cliff moved to Elkhorn in 1951, and in 1968 became the curator for the Elkhorn Automobile Museum. Prior to assuming the role of curator, Cliff was involved with the museum board, working with the first curator, Isaac Clarkson. While living in Elkhorn, Cliff served on the town counil and was chairman of the Elkhorn Centennial Committee in 1970. Clifford McDonald Clarke died on August 17, 1989 in Virden, MB. He is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Einar Axel Sundmark was born on December 23, 1904 on the farm (NE 2-17-17) near Erickson, MB. He attended Lund School. Einar lived and worked on the family farm his entire life, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church, serving in various congregational positions. He also served as secretary-treasurer of Lund School for 30 years and was involved on the boards of many organizations, including the Erickson Co-Op, Parkland Home, Erickson Hospital, Erickson Rec Centre, Erickson Credit Union and the Erickson Medical Clinic. Einar served one term as a councillor for the RM of Clanwilliam.
Elveretta Isabell "Elva" Harris was born on March 1, 1912 in Tate, SK. She attended school in various locations, graduating high school in Eden, MB, while living with an aunt and uncle. Elva then attended Normal School in Winnipeg, graduating in 1931; she taught school in the Lund district, north of Clanwilliam, where she met Einar. Einar and Elva married on June 14, 1934. Together they had two children: Carol and Maitland. Following her marriage, Elva left the classroom to raise her children and be a homemaker. Elva was very active in the community. She was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She was an original member of the Hilltop Red Cross, which became the Hilltop Women's Club. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Erickson Consumers' Co-op and was a leader in the Erickson 4-H sewing club. During their winters in Texas, she volunteered as a reading tutor in schools.
In retirement the couple remained on the farm and enjoyed travelling, gardening in the summer and spending winters in Texas. Elva stayed on the farm following Einar's death until her health forced her to move to Erickson (1996) and then Sandy Lake (2000). Einar Sundmark died on June 30, 1990 in Minnedosa, MB. Elveretta Sundmark died on March 15, 2003 in Sandy Lake, MB. They are buried at Hilltop Baptist Cemetery.

Elmer Howard Peeler was born on March 12, 1907 in Neepawa, MB. Following his mother's death in 1911, he and his sister were taken to family in Ontario. Elmer returned to Manitoba four years later. He attended school at Ospery and Birtle. Aside from a few years in Hamilton, ON (1929-1934), Elmer lived most of his adult life in the Birtle area. Elmer married Daisy Dorothy Hunt (1914-2000) on October 30, 1936 and together they had four children: George, James, Marjorie and Linda. Elmer and Daisy retired from farming in 1970 and in 1982, moved to Souris. Elmer was a member of the United Church and active in farm affairs, the Manitoba Pool and Birtle Co-op. Elmer Peeler died on January 13, 1984 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Birtle Cemetery.

Emmeline Flora Bradley (nee Rowe) was born on March 9, 1897 in Brandon, MB. She grew up on the family homestead farm and graduated from Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI). During her early life, Emmeline suffered a serious illness which required the removal of a kidney at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She married John Bradley (1887-1945) on June 10, 1924 and together they had two children: Grace and Muriel. The family spent many summers at Clear Lake. Emmeline was very active in her chuch as a life member of the ACW of St. Matthew's Anglican Cathedral. She served on the Bishops Committee, traveling throughout the diocese organizing and assisting the the formation of womens groups. Emmeline Bradley died on August 6, 2000 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Frank William Anderson was born on October 23, 1911 on the family farm at NW 20-11-18 near Forrest, MB. He attended school at Turriff and Brandon before graduating with a degree in agriculture from the University of Manitoba in 1935. He then served ten years as an Ag Rep for the Manitoba Department of Agriculture, first in Teulon, later in Minnedosa. Frank married Elizabeth Helen Barson (1919-2016) on August 7, 1943. Together they had four children: William, Margaret, Bonnie and Shirley. The family moved to the Anderson family farm in 1946, where Frank returned to his first love, farming. He retired from active farming in 1982, but continued to live on the farm until 2000. In 1989, the Anderson farm was recognized as a Century Farm. In 1994, Frank received a Manitoba Heritage Award for restoration of the barn. In 1996, in partnership with Delta Water Fowl, the RM of Elton, Ducks Unlimited and PFRA, a wetland habitat site was created on the farm. This habitat was enhanced by a shelter belt planted by the wood lot program of Habitat Heritage. Frank had a life long commitment to the co-operative movement, serving in various capacities with Federated Co-ops, Manitoba Pool Elevators and United Grain Growers. He was also a 4-H Club Leader, a school trustee, a board member of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, and a member of the United Church. He devoted 37 years to the beautification of Humesville Cemetery. In his later years, Frank was an active member of the Elton Leisure Club and a regular at the Brandon YMCA. Frank Anderson died on February 28, 2002 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

Hans Andersen was born at Moline, Manitoba, on February 28, 1922, the third child of Andrew and Hansine Andersen. Andersen grew up on his family’s farm, attending Moline public school. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946, as part of the 23rd Field Artillery of the 4th Division, serving in England, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After military service in World War II, Andersen returned home and started a farming career in the Moore Park district, located in the Rural Municipality of Odanah. In 1946, Andersen also married Marthe Renauld (1922-1977). The couple had 3 children: Karen, James and Mary Lou.
For 40 years, Andersen farmed in the Moore Park area, where he was also heavily involved in the local community. He was a trustee for Moore Park consolidated school district and a member of the Elton municipal school board. He was also a member of the Moore Park pool elevator board, and the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1970, Andersen was elected to the position of Reeve of the RM of Odanah. He remained the Reeve of Odanah until 1978.
In 1978, Andersen married Thelma Terry, and moved to Rapid City. In Rapid City, Andersen continued farming, gradually reducing his time in farming until he sold the last of his land to his family in 1990. In Rapid City, Andersen was involved in the building of a brand new seniors centre, and occupied himself in retirement with not only golfing but lots of traveling, going to places like the United States and Europe.
After 2000, Andersen’s health began to deteriorate due to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Hans Andersen died on January 12, 2008. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Jack Fenton Naismith was born on June 9, 1908 in Heward, SK. When he was three months old his famiy moved to Wawanesa and the Northfield district. Jack began farming the family farm in 1932, but successive crop failures convinced him to move to Edmonton, AB where he began working in the life insurance business. While in Edmonton, Jack married Erica "Erie" Hugo (1913-2000) on January 7, 1939 and together they had two daughters, Dell and Arlie. In 1950, the family moved to the West Coast where he entered the general insurance and real estate business. For many years the family farm was rented to Jack Mooney; Mooney bought the farm in 1964 and married Dell Naismith two years later. For a time after retiring, Jack and Erie spent their winters in Victoria, BC and their summers on the family farm in Manitoba. At some point after 1988, the couple returned to Wawanesa for good. Jack Naismith died on March 24, 2008 in Wawanesa, MB. He is buried at Wawanesa Cemetery.

James Gilmour was born on December 4, 1910 at Griswold, MB. In 1936, he moved with his family to the Forrest District where he worked on the McPhail farm. In 1938, he went to Norway House where he and his twin brother Wesley were on the staff at the Residential School.
Isabel Marjory Forsyth was born on January 25, 1917 in the farm home south of Pipestone, MB. After graduating from high school, Isabel attended the Women's Institute Course in Deloraine for dressmaking and cooking, where she learned skills she used for the rest of her life. In 1939, Isabel travelled to Norway House with a group of teachers, and that is where she met Jim Gilmour.
Jim joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, and on November 7 of the same year he and Isabel were married. Following the marriage, the couple were stationed in Lethbridge, AB and then Mossbank, SK where Jim was a flight instructor. At the end of the war, the Gilmours moved to Pipestone where Jim was manager of the Co-op store. In 1948, they moved to join Jim's brother Hughie on the farm in the Forrest district. During his farming years, Jim was active in Forrest United Church, the rink board, the Pool Elevator board and the School board. He loved to garden, curl and visit. Isabel enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and entertaining. She was involved in community activities including the United Church and as a 4-H leader for 17 years, and enjoyed curling and baseball. She also sketched and painted.
Jim and Isabel moved to Brandon in 1982, where they enjoyed bowling, bridge playing and square dancing. Isabel was also associated with "The Writer's Circle." In 2000, the couple moved to Virden to the Evergreen Place to be closer to family. Jim spent the last year of his life in the Sherwood Home in Virden.
Together the Gilmours had three daughters: Carol Anne, Joan and Lynne. James Gilmour died on March 20, 2003 in Virden, MB. Isabel Gilmour died on September 5, 2007 in Virden, MB. They are both buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Jessie Ramsay Whyte (nee Inverarity) was born on September 27, 1912 at her parents home in Wellwood, MB. She received her education at Wellwood Consolidated School. Jessie married Thomas Whyte (1903-1993) in Brandon in 1933, and together they raised eight children: Yvonne, Joan, Jim, George, Lois, Jeanette, Heather, and Ferg. The family lived on the family farm "Whytewood" northeast of Wellwood.
Jessie was known for her hospitality and her extensive correspondence with family. For many years she wrote columns in the Carberry News Express. An avid baseball fan, she played with the Wellwood Pats. Jessie was active in her community, holding leadership positions in the 4-H Club, was superintendent of the United Church Sunday School and was a member of both the United Church Women and the Presbyterian Womens Guild. In retirement she volunteered both in Carberry and Wellwood. Jessie Whyte died on October 8, 2000 in Winnipeg, MB.

Joseph Shwaluk was born on January 17, 1902 near Olha, MB in a sod hut. His grandparents, father, aunt and uncles had arrived in Canada in 1899 from West Ukraine. Conditions were difficult for the various members of the family upon their arrival in Manitoba. Joseph attended Olha school but largely learned to speak and write English with the aid of Ukrainian/English dictionaries. Joseph married Frances Glushka (1907-1995) on July 15, 1923 and together they had six children: William, Teenie, Sam, Alice, Sylvia and Jean. Joesph farmed near Vista and Oakburn before retiring to Shoal Lake. He was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Joseph Shwaluk died on September 22, 2000 at the Shoal Lake-Strathclair Health Centre. He is buried at St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.

Muriel Isobel Outhwaite (nee Thompson) was born on August 1, 1916 in Brandon, MB, the eldest daughter of Norman Wallace Thompson and Evelyn Elizabeth Pentland. She grew up on the family farm at Justice and attended school there. Following graduation from Brandon Normal School, Muriel taught at Bunclody, Scarth, Norman, Glant and Forrest over 26 years. Muriel married Vauden Robert "Jack" Outhwaite (1904-1970) in July 1939, and together they raised four children: John Duane, Dianne, Bonnie and Lynne. Muriel was a lifetime member of the Justice United Church and its organizations, led 4-H, was a member of the Justice Community Club and the Justice Curling Club. She also enjoyed travelling. Muriel Outhwaite died on March 8, 2000 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Sparling Cemetery.

Victor James Hockley was born May 24, 1919 on the family farm north of Brandon, MB on NW 1/4 28-11-19. He received his education at Powerville School, completing grade 9. A farmer in the RM of Elton for most of his life, Vic married Hazel Gwendoyn Wade (1915-2009) on June 19, 1943. Together they had three children: Ruth, Sylvia and Fred. Vic was a charter member of McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church in 1946. Over the years he also served on the Board of Elders, and was Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of Gideons International and the last Secretary-Treasurer of Ruby School. Vic enjoyed traveling and photography. In his last years, Vic and Gwen lived in Brandon. Victor Hockley died on November 21, 2000 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Zion United Church Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.
