History / Biographical
According to Stuckey and Bain (1996), “The Brandon, Saskatchewan & Hudson’s Bay Railway was built and operated as a totally owned subsidiary of the Great Northern Railway. Construction commenced in late 1905 and by the end of 1905, less than a mile of track had been laid north of the boundary at St. John. In 1906, the remaining 68.6 miles to Brandon were laid and service commenced that year. During the Depression of the 1930s, traffic declined significantly and the entire branch was abandoned in 1936. Over much of the branch’s length, the ties and rails were laid on the prairie without ballast and today little remains of the line apart from traces where there were cuts and bridges.” (p. 18) Stuckey, L. Biographical Info
Isaac Bignell is a Cree artist from The Pas Reserve, 400 miles north of Winnipeg, MB. After leaving The Pas, Isaac has lived in Winnipeg, Minneapolis and Vancouver. Basically a self-taught artist, Isaac has developed various techniques to achieve a distinctive artistic style which combines traditional images with innovative design and color combinations.

Scope and Content
The Scoop Shovel was the official organ of Manitoba Cooperative Conference, including Manitoba Co-operative Dairies, Manitoba Egg and Poultry Pool, Manitoba Co-operative Livestock Producers, and Manitoba Cooperative Wholesale. It was published by the Manitoba Wheat Pool. Its pages record the struggle of farm co-operators to bring to bear the principle of cooperation on agrarian economic problems and to illuminate the central importance of the cooperative principle to human affairs locally and internationally. The sub-series consists of a complete run of The Scoop Shovel.
