Annie McLean (nee Hubbard) was born on January 4, 1895 in Dunville, ON. She came to the Virden, MB district with her family in 1896. Annie attended school in Virden and then worked as a telephone operator. In 1913, she married Frederick Middleton McLean (1885-1962) and the couple farmed in the Hargrave district until retiring to Elkhorn in 1957. Together they raised five boys: Lem, Ray, Bud, Dale and Glen. Annie was a member of Hargrave United Church and of Unit S of St. Paul's UCW. Her later years were spent in Virden. Annie McLean died on September 24, 1984 in Virden, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Harry Edwin Brindle was born on June 13, 1913 in Souris, MB. Educated in Souris, Harry worked for Safeway from 1933-1939. He married Isabel Mary Barlow (1915-2009) on May 2, 1938. The couple had two children: Geraldine and Larry. Shortly after the wedding, the family moved to Estevan, Regina and then to Fort William, where Harry worked for Canada Car Foundry. The family then briefly moved to Montreal and then to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, Harry joined the army and served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. While in the Service, Harry attended radio school in Winnipeg, then used his Service gratuity to continue his education. Following the Second World War, the family moved back to Souris, and Harry opened an appliance store for Box's Hardware called The Electric Shop. A fire in 1951, forced a move to Box's Hardware and then in 1957, Harry opened his own radio and TV repair shop. Harry sold Brindle's Radio and TV in 1976 and retired. Passionate about music, Harry spent his free time playting in dance bands, the city band and a German band, as well as on many occasions in the community. He also served on the committees that built the Legion Club and the swimming pool. Harry Brindle died on January 5, 2012 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
Carter Hawkins Brindle was born in Blackburn, England on November 23, 1867. He came to Canada with his family in 1884, and they homesteaded near Virden, MB before moving to Souris, MB in 1887. Until 1892, Carter was employed as a stage coach driver on the Plum Creek* Trail between Souris and Brandon. By 1900, he was working as a sign painter, carpenter, architect and builder in Souris. Carter desinged many of the brick commercial buildings along Crescent Avenue. A member of the Manitoba Association of Architects after 1910, Carter continued to practice until the late 1930s. Carter married Ida Lora Lawson (1879-1959) on June 30, 1903. Together they had five children: Susie Marion Gwendoline, Hattie Martha, Harry Edwin, Edith and Ida. Carter Brindle died on July 23, 1957 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
*Plum Creek is the old name for what is now Souris, MB. The Plum Creek stage travelled between Brandon and Plum Creek daily from approximately 1886-1892.

Harry Wilson Miller was born on January 9, 1905 on NW 2-12-18 at Justice, MB. He attended school locally until he was old enough to take up farming with his father. Harry married Grace Ellen Cox (1918-2003) on November 14, 1934 and together they had three children: Donna, Garry and Lorna. The Millers farmed in the Justice area until the early 1970s, when they began the process of retiring. In 1990, Harry and Grace moved to Brandon. Harry was the leader of the Justice 4-H Seed Club for over 20 years, was a long-time member of the Justice United Church board and served on the Justice Community Club. He also called many square dances and enjoyed dancing. Harry Miller died on July 16, 1997 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Thomas Henry Martin was born December 23, 1904 in Brookdale, MB. From when he was born until 1965, Thomas lived in the Brookdale region and worked at farming and road building. He retired from farming in 1965, and moved to Neepawa, although he continued to help his son farm in the area. On October 25, 1933 he married Harriet North (1911-1986). Together they had two children: Mona and Vincent. Thomas Martin died on November 6, 1986 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Between 1929 and 1931, Thomas and two of his neighbors were employed by the North Cypress Municipality to build roads in the district, and this is the subject of most of the interview. Thomas also discusses at length the equipment used in road building, how the equipment was used, and the work camps formed by the governments during the 1930’s to create jobs for the unemployed. George Thomas was born on December 24, 1888 in Birmingham, England. George married Beatrice Maud Taylor (1890-1970) on May 12, 1913 in Birmingham, England. The left for Canada a week later and settled in Neepawa where George's sister Alice already lived. In 1917, George started with the Canadian National Railway (CNR) as a Locomotive Foremans Clerk. George retired from the CNR in 1954, and promptly began a successful greenhouse. In his early days in Neepawa, George was Captain of the Neepawa Soccer Team, President of the CNR Recreation Association and also played cricket. He won numerous awards for his flowers in Neepawa, Brandon and Minnedosa, and was a life member of the Neepawa Horticultural Society, which he joined in 1916. He served on the Neepawa Parks Board for eighteen years and was made an Honorary Citizen of the Town of Neepawa in 1973. George and Beatrice had five children: Beatrice, Stanley, Jack, Mary and Roy. George Thomas died in 1985 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Neepawa Riverside Cemetery.

Tom Mitchell (Thomas Sidney) was born April 23, 1949 in Brandon, MB. He attended Brandon University, graduating with a B.A. in 1970. While an undergraduate Tom played for the Brandon University Bobcat hockey team. Tom obtained an M.A. (history) from the University of Manitoba in 1973, and from 1972-1973, he completed the Education Certification program at the Faculty of Education, Brandon University. During the 1970s, he taught high school in Brandon and at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI) and Neelin Composite High School. Following one year at Fleming School (grade five), in 1981, Tom became a Study Skills Specialist in Student Services at Brandon University. He served as Dean of Student Services from 1983-1989 and in 1991, he was appointed Registrar. Tom served in this position until 1996. From 1996 - 2011, Tom was University Archivist and taught courses in Canadian history under the auspices of the History Department at BU. Throughout his tenure at Brandon University Tom was engaged in research and publication of historical work dealing with the history of education, labour and the state. In retirement, Tom wrote and produced a series of historical documentaries with funding provided by MTS Stories From Home and continued to be pursue various academic writing projects small and large. He was named University Archivist Emeritus in 2012, and received a lifetime achievement award from Brandon University Senate in 2019. Tom married Bonnie Burns in 1973, and together they had two children, Jennifer and Drew.

Thomas Henry Seens was born on September 18, 1895 in the RM of Daly. He attended Tarbolton School. Thomas married Annie Mae Wood (1897-1997) on February 26, 1916 and together they had three children: George, Leslie, and Helen. In addition to farming, Thomas served as a councillor of the Rural Municipality of Daly for sixteen years, and its Reeve from 1940-1950. He was elected as a Progressive Conservative to the Manitoba Legislature at the1949 general election but was defeated in 1953. Thomas was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 115. Thomas Seens died on November 26, 1989 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Tarbolton Cemetery.

In 1938, he attended the Chicago Vocational Training Corp, graduating as a Diesel Automotive and Aero Engineer. Tom farmed until joining the Army in 1941, but returned to the farm following a medical discharge in 1942. He continued farming with with his father, then his mother, until selling and moving to Virden in 1966. Initially, Tom ran the town grader, but then purchased a gravel truck. In 1975, he purchased Virden Machine Shop, which he operated until the time of his death. He never married. Tom enjoyed going to museums, looking at old machinery and cars, and attending thresermen's reunions. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and for many years looked after the town clock in Virden. Thomas Jeffrey died on October 23, 1996 in Winnipeg, MB. He is buried at Virden Cemetery.

Catherine Elizabeth "Kay" Dennis was born on November 26, 1916 at Brandon, MB. She attended school in Brandon and received her Psychiatric Nursing degree at the Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) in 1938. Kay worked at the BMHC for 42 years. Her hobbies included natural history, bird-watching and summers at at Clear Lake. She never married. Catherine Dennis died on December 16, 2003 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
Evelyn MacKenzie was born on September 29, 1905 at Craggie Inn, Daviot, County of Inverness, Scotland. She came to Canada with her parents in 1909, first to Winnipeg and then to Balmoral in 1911. Evelyn came to Brandon in 1924 or 1925 to take her nurses training at the Brandon Mental Hospital, graduating with a diploma in Psychiatric Nursing in 1927. From 1927-1942, she worked on BMHC wards, before being promoted to Acting Superintendent of Nurses. Evelyn enlisted in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during the Second World War, and was stationed at Halifax. Following the war, she returned to the BMHC where she was Assistant Superintendent of Nurses until her retirment in 1970. Evelyn enjoyed golfing, curling and bowling, was a member of the Brandon Golf and Country Club, an honorary charter member of the Brandon Quota Club, a member of Ex-WRENS Association (Chippawa Division) and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Evelyn never married. Evelyn MacKenzie died on April 19, 1993 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Stonewall Cemetery.

Mary Evelyne Conley (nee Dixon) was born on November 30, 1919 in Carievale, SK. She lived in Carievale until 1940, at which point she moved to Brandon, MB. In Brandon she received her nurses training, graduating as an RN in 1943, and then working at Brandon General Hospital (BGH). In 1945, she moved to Toronto where she continued working as a nurse and also married Murray Ross Conley (1919-1998) on April 21, 1945. The couple had three children: Judith, Sharon and Bradley. After a year in Toronto, Evelyne returned to Brandon to raise her family and work as a private nurse at BGH. She retired from Fairview Personal Care Home in 1971, to care for her son, who developed multiple sclerosis (MS) in his 20s. This experience precipitated Evelyne's involvement with the MS Society. Evelyne Conley died on September 3, 2013 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Robert Neilson was born on June 15, 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came to Canada with his family in October 1919. They settled briefly in Manor, SK before moving to Brandon, MB in 1920. After high school, Bob worked at Yaeger's Furs and was promoted to general manager. Bob Robert married Margaret McComb (1919-2001) on June 19, 1944 and together they had two daughters, Jean and Linda. From 1969-1975, Bob and Marg owned Eve's Gift Shop, and after the store was sold, they were caretakers at Princess Park and Towers until retiring in 1979. They continued to live at Princess Towers for several years, before moving to Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. Bob and Marg loved spending time at Waskesiu, Clear Lake, and later at Killarney. He was an active member of the Eastern Star, Shriners, Central United Church, K-40, Kinsmen and YMCA, as well as a long time volunteer at Prairie Oasis. Robert Neilson died on August 3, 2006 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Smith was born on March 25, 1901 at Madford-Ingelow, MB. He attended Matheson school and farmed in the Ingelow district. The family farm, 2-12-17, was sold in 1951, and Robert moved to Winnipeg where he was employed with the International Harvester Company and Triange Auto Supply. Robert met Martha Buchanon Thorburn (1917-2010) when they were both Scout leaders and actively involved with Chalmers United Church in Winnipeg. The couple married in 1955, and together they had one son, Alexander. Robert and Martha retired in 1971, and moved to Douglas, MB. Robert Smith died on November 30, 1983 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Robert Strath was born on December 28, 1888 on the farm Mains of Elrich at Auchnagatt, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He attended school in Scotland until he was 12, and then was a farm helper to age 18. He immigrated to Canada in 1907, originally travelling from St. John, NB to Brandon, MB. For the next several years, Bob moved around the provinces of Western Canada working on farms, the railway, in the bush, homesteading and mining. In 1913, he returned to Manitoba, where he began farming For the next fifty years, Bob would farm as a tenant or owner in the Hebron district, Carroll district and at Riverside. He retired to Brandon in 1963, then moved to Souris in 1965. Bob married Selina Gladys Rogers (1896-1975) on November 14, 1917 in Souris, MB and together they had five children: George, Russell, Jim, Roberta and Donald. Robert Strath died on March 17, 1987 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery.

Charles Robert Turner was born on March 8, 1912 on the family farm near Wellwood, MB. Charles left home in 1929, working as bank clerk in Pipestone and Minto before returning to Wellwood in 1935. During World War II he spent three years in the RCAF as part of the War Assets Corp out of the Neepawa airport. Charles married Nora Emma Graham (1916-1999) on October 19, 1940 and together they had five children: Jane, George, Michael, Patrick and Bill. The family lived on the farm at Wellwood until 1992, when Charles and Nora moved to Carberry. Charles Turner died in 1995. He is buried at Wellwood Cemetery.

Robert Charles Tracy Wright was born on March 24, 1896 on a farm in the Ninette district. Robert attended Duncraig School, but much of his time was spent helping his father on the farm. A. Norah Wright was born on September 23, 1899, also on the family farm. She attended Lenore School. Robert farmed until his health failed, while Norah kept house. In 1947, the siblings moved to Ninette and Robert worked in the lumber yard and Norah did housework for families in the village. The Wrights left Ninette in October 1981, and moved to the Lakeview Senior Citizens Home in Killarney, MB. Robert Wright died on March 21, 1983 in Killarney, MB. Norah Wright died on January 7, 1986 in Killarney, MB. They are both buried at Ninette Cemetery.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
