Paint loss in areas 49cm T X 66cm R; 47cm TM X 87.5cm R (both c.. 0.5cm in diameter). Many long, thin scratches resulting in paint abrasion, especially in lower part of the painting. Paint loss in area 48cm B X 101cm L (c.. 0.5 X 1cm)-possibly inherent to the image. Painting could use some surface protection to prevent further damages
Severely dusty, especially the velvet mat. Velvet mat is clotted together in top and bottom middle area. Left arm of frame is slightly dented along backside edge.
Paul Panton, a native of Melita, and now a resident of Boissevain, began art lessons with Miss Helen Douglas in New Westminster, B.C.. He continued study with Joe Plaskett at the Vancouver School of Art. During 1962 to 1964 he studied with Steve Repa at the Brandon Allied Arts Centre. Sitting Bull made only one tour with the Wild West Show, declining other invitations feeling his presence was needed by his followers at the Standing Rock Agency. This photograph was known to have been taken by David Notman, son of the premier Canadian photographer William Notman, during the summer of 1885. Barry likely obtained this copy of the negative from Notman himself. (Harbaugh, P., 1982)

In 2003 Units 1 to 9 were excavated at the Sarah site by supervisor James Graham and crew of Sarah Graham, Mike Evans, Todd Kristensen, Shayne Kolesar, Lisa Sonnenburg and Emily Ansell.
Excavations took place in 2003 at Crepeele West (Units 1-5) and Crepeele East (Units 6-9). The site was subsequently renamed the Sarah site DiMe-28. Sarah Graham's field journal contains notes on the Casselman survey and Crepeele 2003 as well as the Sarah site 2003.
