History / Biographical
Allen John "Jack" Whetter was born September 6, 1908 in Dand, MB, in the Hartney district. Aside from one year in Ontario, Jack spent his entire life in the Chain Lakes area. He attended Chain Lakes and Dand schools, and the Chain Lakes Friends Church, which was later moved to Dand and became Dand United Church. A farmer, he maried Donalda Louise Gee (1919-2014) in 1940, and together they had four children: Gerald, Darlene, Rodney and Nancy. Jack and Donalda were members of the Elgin Square Dance Club and curled at Hathaway. In later years they enjoyed travelling. Jack was involved in leadership roles in Dand and Hartney, serving as a board member for Dand School, Hartney Credit Union and Manitoba Pool. A dedicated member of his church, he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Jack Whetter died on February 2, 2002 in Hartney, MB. He is buried at Chain Lakes Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.

History / Biographical
William Charles Curle was born on January 30, 1910 on the NW section of 24-12-18 near Justice, MB. A farmer until 1960, Charles then entered the construction business. He married Helga Rosa Johnson (1913-1981) on November 19, 1937 and together hey had six children: Gerald, Dennis, Gaynor, Caroline, David, and Terry. The couple lived at Justice until 1967, then moved to Winnipeg. Charles Curle died on September 23, 1989 in Winnipeg, MB. He was survived by his second wife Delores. He is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

According to the typed sheet in the back of the secondo score, the Blue and Gold March was an original composition written by a Third Year Arts student, Mr. Charles Koester. It was accepted and named "The Blue and Gold March of Brandon College" by President J.R.C. Evans in April 1948. The piece was the result of many years of work. The melody first entered Koester's thoughts during the war when he was an RCAF Flight Lieutenant in North Africa. It was first played as a piano duet by Miss Zen Koester and Mr. Gordon Sefton at regular Chapel service. In his remarks at the occassion, Charles Koester acknowledge the assistance he received from Zen Koester, Gordon Sefton and Professor E. Savage in arranging the music. Charles Henry Koester attended Brandon College ca. 1911-1916 and served in Wold War I.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of the original score of the Blue and Gold March of Brandon College written by Charles H. Koester and arranged by Elizabeth Z. Koester and Charles H. Koester. Written as a piano duet, there is sheet music for the primo and secondo parts. At the back of the secondo score, there is a brief history of the March and a copy of "Hail Our College" (music and lyrics). Fonds also includes the sheet music for the B flat saxophone part of the march.

Accruals
The Faculty of Music is planning to record the March and donate a copy of the recording to the Archives.
Repro Restriction
While technically copyright remains with Charles Koester, it is clear that he wrote this music for use by Brandon College. Individuals or organizations other than Brandon College or Brandon University are limited by the copyright provisions affecting this composition.

History / Biographical
Charles Robert Turner was born on March 8, 1912 on the family farm near Wellwood, MB. Charles left home in 1929, working as bank clerk in Pipestone and Minto before returning to Wellwood in 1935. During World War II he spent three years in the RCAF as part of the War Assets Corp out of the Neepawa airport. Charles married Nora Emma Graham (1916-1999) on October 19, 1940 and together they had five children: Jane, George, Michael, Patrick and Bill. The family lived on the farm at Wellwood until 1992, when Charles and Nora moved to Carberry. Charles Turner died in 1995. He is buried at Wellwood Cemetery.

Charles Sage was born around 1898. He farmed just west of his father's farm near Neepawa, MB. Charlie was always active in community affairs and for some years operated a threshing outfit run by steam engine, threshing for serveral neighbours. With his first wife, Bessie Georgina Martin (1906?-1933), he had a daughter Joan. Charlie maried his sister-in-law Vera Maud Martin (1913-2012) in 1935, and together they had a son, Edward. Charlie enjoyed dancing and playing the violin, as well as various sports. Charles Sage died in 1978 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
