Photograph was collected during the research phase of the monograph "Manitoba: The Province & The People" (1987) written by Fred McGuinness and Ken Coates. Writing on the back of the photograph reads: Blacksmith John Peter Friesen of Grunthal flattens a piece of iron fresh out of the forge at the Thresherman's [sic.] Reunion in Austin Thursday. July 24/86 dirk.

History / Biographical
Douglas Dennison Peters, PC , Ph.D. (born March 3, 1930) in Brandon, Manitoba is a Canadian banker, economist and politician. He is married to Audrey Catherine Clark, has two children and two grandchildren. He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen's University in 1963 and a Ph. D. from the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania in 1969 where he was classmates with two other well-known Canadian economists, Arthur Donner and Robert Rabinovitch. After serving as chief economist and senior vice-president of the Toronto-Dominion Bank, Peters entered politics in the 1993 election. He was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Scarborough East. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed Peters to the position of Secretary of State for International Financial Institutions. Peters retired from politics at the 1997 election.

Custodial History
After the cancellation of McGuinness’ CBC Radio broadcast “Neighborly News from the Prairies” that he hosted from 1980 to 1983, McGuinness continued working with the CBC. He was popularly known for his work as the prairie essayist for CBC Radio’s Morningside with Peter Gzowski, a position he held for 17 years.

History / Biographical
John Peters was born on November 7, 1918 in Hague, SK. He moved to the Broodkale area in 1941, and then the Minnedosa area. Hazel Sayward was born on January 5, 1929 in Brandon, MB. Her family lived on a farm northeast of Moore Park. Hazel attended school in Moore Park, then in the Brookdale district but eventually quit school to help on the farm. John and Hazel married in November 1943, and together they had two children: Connie and Perry. The couple farmed in the Oberon district, then moved to Duddenhoffer farm, which later became part of the Langford Community Pasture. They managed the government pasture from 1948-1979. Hazel and John then retired on their own farm beside the community pasture. John Peters died on January 21, 2011. Hazel Peters died on January 14, 1917. The are both buried at Riverside Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.

Item is an audiocassette tape containing an interview with John and Helen Peters about community pasture life in Langford and Lansdowne. Interviewer is Dorothy Martin.

History / Biographical
Peter M Martens was born on August 22, 1909 in Zaporizka, Ukraine. He came to Canada with his parents, grandfather and brothers in 1926, when the Russian government made it impossible for Mennonites to enjoy religious freedom. Peter married Margaret Unger (1912-2003) on November 17, 1935 and together they had five sons: Henry, Jacob, Peter, Walter and Arthur. Peter farmed, first with his parents, then at 9-1-16, then at 21-1-16. He and Margaret retired to the village of Lena in 1968. Peter Martens died on October 19, 1990 in Killarney, MB. He is buried at Killarney and District Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s.
