Maude Marie MacDonald (nee Evans) was born on May 23, 1910 in Indian River, Ontario. In 1913, her family moved to Manitoba, settling in the Brookdale area. She attended school in Brookdale and at Brandon College, graduating with a BA in 1930. After graduating from Normal School in Saskatoon, she taught at Justice, Brookdale, Brandon, Kemnay, Ochre River and Carberry, before retiring in 1971. Marie married George MacDonald (1913-1989), who she met while teaching in Ochre River, in June 1937. The couple had three children: Janet, Karen and Donald. In 1951, Marie and George bought Maxhame, a farm near Brookdale. She continued to live on the farm after George died. Marie loved gardening and reading, and in her later years, she enjoyed travelling. Marie MacDonald died on January 25, 1996 in Winnipeg, MB and is buried in Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Bessie Marie Hill was born in 1933. She graduated from Winnipeg Normal School in 1953. Throughout her forty year teaching career, she taught at Hagyard (1953-56), Melita (1956-62), Shilo (1962-65), Kenora (1965-68), DND Germany (1968-76), Kenora (1976-80), Assiniboine South School Division - Laidlaw (1980-84), and Assiniboine South School District - Royal (1984-92).
Florence Mabel (Nelson) Hill was born on June 19, 1907 in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. She attended the Brandon Normal School in 1924-1925, then taught at Rose Lea School (1925-1929), Errol, at Lenore (1929-1931) and Ravine School (1955-1956). In 1931, she married Gordon Orval Hill (1898-1969). Together they had three children: Allan Hill, Bessie Marie Hill and Georgina Bernice (Hill) Matiation. Florence Mabel Hill died in Lenore, Manitoba on December 23, 1992 in her 86th year.
Sarah Viola Hill was born on June 28, 1900, and was Florence Mabel (Nelson) Hill's sister-in-law. Viola attended the Brandon Normal School in 1916-1917, and took graduate studies at the University of Manitoba. During her thirty-nine year teaching career she taught at Hagyard, Oak Lake (1917-1918), Cottonwood (1918-1919), Rose Park (1919), Grand Coulee (1919-1920), Virden (1920-1922), Lumsden, Saskatchewan (1922-1925), Lenore (1925-1934), Gunton (1934-1936), Birtle Indian Residential School (1936-1941), Ravine, Lenore (1947-1950), The Pas (1950-1956) and Woodnorth (1956-1966). During the war years, Viola worked as part of the Civil Service in Ottawa in the Department of Finance (1941) and later in Vancouver, B.C. Sarah Viola Hill died on January 19, 1988 at Virden District Hospital.

Custodial History
Ann Murdoch donated a copy of "My Dear Will" to the McKee Archives in February 2008. The formal donation of the Baker family letters occurred on September 27, 2008 at a reception in the Gathering Space at the John E. Robbins Library.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of a collection of about 200 letters primarily written by William Baker (although letters written by other family members are also included), who left Liverpool and settled in Oak Lake, to his son William who remained in England. The letters offer insights on a wide range of subjects including the conditions of immigrants and the Riel "situation".
The fonds also contains a supplement to "My Dear Will: Reflections of Prairie Pioneer Life." This latter publication consists of transcribed copies of the letters in the Baker family fonds. The letters were originally transcribed by Ronald James Parsons and his wife Rita Olive Parsons (nee Blake) and published, along with some letters, photographs and other documents for family c. 1997. The booklet was updated in 2007 by Ronald and Rita's daughter, Ann Murdoch. The Supplement was prepared by Ann Murdock and her sister Dawn Powell.

Alice Eva Simmons was born on July 23, 1909 in Wingham, ON. Her mother's side of the family came to Ontario from England through the Immigrant Department of Canada, with the help of the Salvation Army. After Eva's father died, her mother remarried a farmer from the Bunclody, MB area; Eva and her three siblings grew up in this area, with Eva attending high school in Brandon. Eva married Carman Duncan in 1932, and the couple farmed in the Moline area until Carman's death in 1957. It was here that their daughters Corinne and Peggy were born. Eva and Corrine lived in Brandon and Calgary before Eva moved back to Brandon, where she resided for the rest of her life. Eva was actively involved in the Salvation Army in Brandon, serving as the secretary of the Brandon Salvation Army court. She was also very active in the Daily House Museum auxiliary. Eva Duncan died on August 15, 2001 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rapid City Cemetery.

Duncan E Kennedy was born on July 5, 1906 on the farm in Elton municipality. Duncan married Helen Laurie Hutcheon (1906-1985) in 1927. They raised four children: Leonard, Gordon, Cecil and Lorna. The couple spent their early married life on a farm in Springwater, SK, before moving to Hartney, Forrest and Brandon where Duncan was employed by Manitoba Pool Elevators as a grain buyer and elevator manager. Duncan enjoyed sports, including hockey, curling and fishing. He also enjoyed camping with his family and in later years travelling. Duncan Kennedy died on September 22, 1996 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

Kate Stronach Duncan was born on July 17, 1915 in Brandon, MB. She received her education through the Brandon School Division and completed secretarial studies at Wheat City Business College. She was very active in the Girl Guide movement as a Brownie Leader, a Guide Leader and ultimately a District Commissioner. Kate was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, with particular interest in the Heather Club and the WMS, of which she was an Honourary Life Member.
Kate enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War, earning the rank of Sergeant. Following her discharge in 1946, she returned to Brandon and began working with the Industrial Acceptance Corporation. She remained with the company until retirement. Kate never married. Kate Stronach Duncan died on November 4, 2004 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

History / Biographical
J.D. McGregor was a leading agriculturist from Brandon who served as Lieutenant Governor in the province of Manitoba during the 1930's. The Hon. J.D. McGregor was born in Amherstburg, Ontario August 29, 1860. He came west with his father in 1877, and entered the horse and cattle trade. McGregor established Glencarnock Farm north of Brandon and created one of the finest Aberdeen-Angus cattle herds in North America. In 1912 and 1913, his cattle (Glencarnock Victor and Glencarnock Victor II) were selected Grand Champions at the Chicago International. McGregor was a Liberal in politics with close ties to Clifford Sifton. From 1897-99, he served as mines inspector in the Klondike during the gold rush in that region. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba from 1929-1934. James Duncan McGregor died March 15, 1935.

This collection was donated to Brandon University in 1971 by McGregor's daughter Mrs. E.C. Harte. The collection was accessioned in 1998 by the McKee Archives.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of photos and slides, principally of the Klondike during the gold rush era (1897-1902); Government House seating plans and speeches from a wide variety of events (1912-1934); correspondence of McGregor's, primarily from his time as Lieutenant Governor (1912-1934); a (23.75 oz.) gold bag; a state publication "Instructions for Lieutenant Governors;" documents pertaining to the history of the Manitoba Winter Fair; and documents dealing with the early career of Winston Churchill.
Item is a mini-chapbook entitled "Barker's Dozen" by Lucile Angela Morreale Barker. It is series 1, number 7 of the Dollarpoems series. The series was published by Pierian Press, Brandon University with the assistance of the Manitoba Arts Council.
Duncan Alexander MacGibbon, economist, was born in Lochaber Bay, Quebec, on 12 March 1882. He was educated at McMaster University and then went to Brandon College, Manitoba, to teach. He left Brandon to enrol at the University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D. in economics in 1915. He began to teach at McMaster University but his teaching career was halted by World War I. After the war he joined the University of Alberta as professor and head of the Department of Political Economy. He served as Commissioner for the Alberta Government on banking and credit with respect to the industry of agriculture in 1922. He was a member of the Royal Grain Inquiry Commission, Canada, 1923-1924. He left the University of Alberta in 1929 to become a member of the Canadian Board of Grain Commissioners, a post he held until his retirement in 1949. In 1930 he was attached to the Canadian delegation to Imperial Conference, London; in 1932 he served the same role at the imperial Economic Conference in Ottawa in 1932. After his retirement, he returned to McMaster University to teach part-time. Among his many writings, MacGibbon published two definitive books on the grain trade: The Canadian Grain Trade (1932) and The Canadian Grain Trade, 1931-1951 (1952). He died in Hamilton, Ont. on 10 October 1969.

Mary Ellen Ross was born in July 1872. She married David Henry Schwalm in Woodstock, Ontario on January 2, 1889. David died ca. 1895, leaving Mary with two small children - Clara Amy and Annie Irene. At some point after 1901, Mary was transferred (the nature of the transfer is unknown although it may amount to a character reference) to the Methodist Church in Brandon, Manitoba from the Central Methodist Church in Toronto. It appears that Mary was back in Woodstock by 1907. By 1911, she and her daughters were living in Toronto.
Custodial History
The items in the collection remained in the possession of Mary Schwalm until her death, at which point they passed to her grandson (Annie Irene's son). Schwalm's great-granddaughter Linda Tripp donated them to the McKee Archives in July 2007.

4 Brandon College artifacts - includes a small plate, cream pitcher, sugar bowl and bud vase. All the pieces were made in Germany and have the same drawing of the Brandon College Original Building on them. They are primarily green and yellow in color.
1 drawing - architectural drawing of the front view of Brandon College as it would appear when the Ladies' Building (Clark Hall) was completed in September 1906.
2 letters - both letters were written by J.A. Rankin, Pastor at Central Methodist Church, Toronto re the transfer of Mary Schwalm from the Central Methodis Church on Bloor Street East to Methodist Church, Brandon.

Mary Emma McIntosh (nee Graham) was born on April 21, 1906 on 36-12-15 SW. She attended Kennedy district school, Wellwood Consolidated School and Brandon Normal School. A teacher from 1927-1931, she married George Herbert "Herb" McIntosh (1909-1993) on October 4, 1929. They farmed in the Carberry area and together they had five children: Yvonne, Gwen, Linda, Muriel and Ian. Mary and Herb were both community minded. Mary ran for political office, was involved in the Manitoba Farmers Union, serving as Women's president, and sat on the Carberry/North Cypress library board. Mary McIntosh died on March 21, 1990 on the farm in the Harte district.

Mary Milroy (nee?) was born on May 29, 1913 in Camboise, England. Her first husband died in England. Mary married George Smith Milroy (1914-2001) and in 1946, she and her daughter Betty from her first marriage, came to Elkhorn, MB, where George was from. Mary and George had four children together: Margaret, Lillian, George and Cynthia. Mary was a devoted homemaker, who spent some time working as a cook for railway gangs. She enjoyed serving in community and church organizations, including the Legion. Mary Milroy died on November 1, 1995 in Elkhorn, MB. She is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Mary Smigelsky Rauliuk (nee Birin) was born on April 4, 1901 at Oakburn, MB. She was the eldest daugher of John & Anna Birin (Bartoszewski), who came to Canada around 1899 from Austria. The Birin's were Polish speaking. The family moved to Brandon around 1901 and lived in the North End, where John bought and farmed land in the "flats."
Mary grew up in Brandon, attending St. Michael's Academy and Park School. She married Paul Smigelsky (1896-1966) around 1921, and together they had a daughter, Jean. For many years Mary was employed by A.E. McKenzie Seeds Ltd. She and her husband also operated Paul's Grocery store for over 25 years. Following the death of her first husband, Mary married Caister Nicholas Rauliuk (1904-1971). Mary was an active member of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. Mary Rauliuk died on April 27, 1990 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemtery.
