William Currie was born on February 28, 1834 in Lanark County, ON. In 1860, he moved to St. Mary's, where he worked in mercantile and grain businesses until 1879, when he emigrated to Manitoba. The following year, he took up homesteading along the Assiniboine River, at a site known as Currie's Landing. He received and forwarded frieght from steamboats travelling the river. From 1893-1902, he served as baliff for the Brandon District, before resigning and moving to Brandon where he engaged in the real estate and fire insurance business. Currie married Ellen Creighton of Blanchard, ON in 1861. Together they had six chrildren: Robert Wilson Currie, Margaret Anne Currie, Harriet Ellen Currie, William James Currie, James Weldon Currie, and Lottie Louise Currie. History / Biographical
Edward Lloyd Bowler was born on November 8, 1903 in the R.M. of Rockwood to John and Annie Bowler. While at Brandon College, Bowler was active in student affairs. He was twice elected Treasurer of the BCSA, was a main stay on the College soccer team, a tennis enthusiast and also became the first Managing Editor to make Publications a paying proposition. Bowler graduated with the Class of 1931 before returning to Brandon College in 1932, to persue post graduate work in Geology. His M.A. dissertation, entitled "The Geologic and Economic Aspects of Copper," was submitted to McMaster University in April 1932. At some point following the completion of his M.A., Bowler married Kathleen Addrene (b. 1911, d. December 23, 1996) and moved to British Columbia. E. Lloyd Bowler died on February 23, 1962, after a lengthy illness in the Trail Tadanac Hospital. He is buried in the Broadview Cemetery in Saskatchewan.
Custodial History
Mr. Visser a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario acquired this album at purchase through a stamp collection vendor. He recognized Brandon College in some of the photographs and took the initiative to donate the album to the Archives. Internal evidence within the album suggests that the album appears to have been created by Edward Lloyd Bowler (Class of 1931). We have made an administrative decision to use Bowler's name for the collection.
Scope and Content
This album contains several photographs of faculty and staff involved in related events at Brandon College in the late 1920s.
Notes
History/Bio information taken from the 1931 and 1932 Sickles, the Manitoba Vital Statistics database, Bowler's obituary in the Februrary 28, 1962 edition of the Stonewall Argus and Teulon Times, the Find a Grave website and the Saskatchewan Cemeteries Project website. A photograph of Bowler appears in the 1927-28 Sickle "Arts 29." Description by Christy Henry and Tom Mitchell.

105 b/w photographs
History / Biographical
Alfred Fowler was born in 1903, in Toronto, Ontario. At the age of 23 he began working for Canadian National Railways (C.N.R.) in the company's telegraph accounting department. He remained employed there for 45 years, with the exception of the years 1940-45 when he served with the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II. During his service he was stationed at Shilo, Manitoba, where he met his future wife, Elsie Bowen. They were married late in 1944, and in 1945 returned to Toronto. Fowler remained in Toronto until his death in 1969. Throughout his life, Mr. Fowler was an ardent amateur photographer.
Custodial History
All 105 prints in this collection were created by Davidson & Gowen, a photography business located in Brandon. It seems likely that they were created for display and/or for commercial sale as part of the November 7, 1912 "Harvest" edition of The Brandon Sun. Alfred Fowler acquired a copy of the Davidson and Gowen prints during his stay at C.F.B. Shilo during the Second World War. In 1946 Alfred Fowler left Brandon returning to his home in Toronto. With the death of Alfred in 1969 the collection passed to his wife, Elsie Fowler. Elsie died in 1987, also in Toronto. Her estate passed to her nephew, Byron Forsyth, a Brandon resident. Byron brought the collection back to Brandon and in 1999 donated it to the McKee Archives.
Scope and Content
The prints concern various subjects in Brandon, Manitoba c. 1911-1912 including Brandon residences, store fronts/businesses, streetscapes, churches, the Brandon Fair, parks, hotels, institutional structures (ie hospitals, City Hall) and rail yards (both Canadian Northern and Canadian Pacific) in the city. These images provide a visual record of Brandon in the years just before the Great War.
Notes
CAIN No. 202647. All addresses listed for photographs in the Fowler collection were derived from Henderson's Directories (1911, 1913).
Location Copy
Copies of the photographs are in the green binder on the reference shelf in the reading room. Negatives for CPR photographs have been placed with 6-1999.10 (CPR Railway depot).
