Sitting Bull made only one tour with the Wild West Show, declining other invitations feeling his presence was needed by his followers at the Standing Rock Agency. This photograph was known to have been taken by David Notman, son of the premier Canadian photographer William Notman, during the summer of 1885. Fred McGuinness was a sessional lecturer in the English Department at Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba where he co-taught an introductory undergraduate course in journalism with English Professor John Blaikie. Although McGuinness had 30 years experience as a journalist, editor, publisher, and freelance writer, as well as an extensive public speaking career, the partnering was necessary because he did not have a graduate degree, a qualification necessary for teaching in a university setting. In addition to his professional experience, McGuinness was also an avid reader on topics about the process of writing and the publishing of popular writing.
McGuinness likely began teaching his journalism course at Brandon University in 1983 and continued until 1990, possibly 1996. McGuinness often referenced his class when writing his Neighborly News column. A portion of McGuinness’ course involved analyzing and debating current events from newspaper headlines. McGuinness emphasized the importance of clean copy, spelling, and grammar with his editing assignments.
Custodial History
Accession 1-2015 contains records created and collected over the course of McGuinness’ career as a newspaper journalist, freelance writer, and sessional instructor. The Estate of Fred McGuinness donated the materials to the SJ McKee Archives circa 2011. The Archives accessioned the records in 2015.

The subseries contains records created and collected by Fred McGuinness during his time as a sessional instructor and writer. Consisting of teaching materials McGuinness used in the undergraduate course he taught with Professor John Blaikie the subseries includes: lecture notes, quizzes, exercises, exams, and newspaper and magazine articles.

Photograph shows street view of north side of Rosser Avenue, primarily the 700 block, along which sewer pipe is being laid. Visible buildings and businesses include: The Fleming Block with Lowes Brothers Clothing and Manitoba Farmers Hedge and Wire Fence Company, the Beaubier Block and its Empire Hotel, A.M. Percival (a grocer), the Brandon Hardware Company (600 block), and the Arlington Hotel (500 block) are visible along the north side of the avenue. The Bank of Hamilton Building is on the southeast corner of 8th Street and Rosser Avenue.

Scope and Content
Photograph shows the remains of the Syndicate Block after the fire in January 1916. The building is situated on the southwest corner of Seventh Street and Rosser Avenue. Ice from the firefighting process covers the building. The tailor shop J.S. Laughton & Son (701 Rosser Avenue) can be seen on the north side of Rosser Avenue.
Photograph shows the recently constructed Strathcona Block. H. Lamontagne & Co. Ltd., Wholesale, occupies the ground floor. Scaffolding is suspended from the north side of the building. Buildings have yet to be erected to the north and south sides of the Strathcona Block.

Image of the Fowler Block in Baldur, MB. On the left is a shoe and harness shop owned and operated by the Fowlers from 1899-1978. On the right is J. Smith & Co. Merchants, a grocery and dry goods store. As of 2000, a grocery store still occupied the premises. Men are standing in front of the entrance to the two stores.
Chester James McFadden was born on April 25, 1897 at Bradwardine in the RM of Daly. In 1904, his family moved to Broadview Farm southeast of Rivers, MB. Chester started school at Bradwardine, then attended Pendennis school. He continued his education at Rivers Collegiate. Chester farmed with his father until 1917, when he joined the Royal Flyng Corps, and again from 1919-1926. In 1926, Chester purchased the family farm. Margaret "Madge" Rutherford was born September 23, 1896 at Wheatland in the RM of Daly. She attended Daly school. Prior to her marriage, Madge took homemaking training at Manitoba Agricultural College and training in nursing at the Brandon General Hospital. She was also a homemaker for her father and brother. Chester and Madge married on November 27, 1926. They raised their two children, Donald and Eileen, on Broadview Farm. Although they built their semi-retirement home overlooking Lake Wahtopanah in 1964, Chester continued to farm Broadview until he was 75, and continued to be actively involved in operations for another ten years after that. In 1984, Chester and Madge moved into Rivers.
Madge was a member of Daly Church and Rivers United Church, Daly Ladies' Aid, Rivers Ladies' Aid, Women's Missionary Society, the United Church Women, the Rivers Women's Institute and the Pendennis Guild of the Riverdale Hospital Auxiliary. Chester served Rivers Methodist Church and later Rivers United Church as a Tuxis boys' group leader in the 1920s and over the years as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, a church elder and board member. He was also a trustee of the Rivers Consolidated School District for 25 years, a long-time member of the Manitoba Pool Elevators, and the Brandon Consumers Co-op. Madge McFadden died February 11, 1989 in Rivers, MB. Chester McFadden died May 9, 1989 in Brandon, MB. They are both buried at Rivers Cemetery.

Fredrick Lloyd Jones was born on October 23, 1905 near Killarney, MB. Lloyd married Evelyne G. Jennings (1907-1991) in 1932 and together they had four children: Ruth, Lawrence, Marjorie and Olive. He farmed near Ninga until 1950, when the family moved to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, Lloyd worked at Eaton's as Santa Claus and as a furniture salesman. He later sold real estate. Lloyd was a talented artist in wood and stone and held membership in the Manitoba Society of Artists, the Rock of Ages Lapidary Club and the Manitoba Camera Club. He was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church. Lloyd Jones died on June 14, 1986 in Winnipeg, MB. He is buried at Ninga Cemetery.

Marguerite Clemintine "Margaret" Catley (nee Jamieson) was born on May 14, 1916 in Hamiota, MB. She moved to Brandon, MB in 1935, where she worked as a nurse until retiring in 1974. Marg married Oswald Roy Catley (?-1987) in Brandon on September 3, 1949. They had no children. Margaret was a member of Naomi Rebekah Lodge. Margarget Catley died on December 22, 1992 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Margaret Winnifred Smith (nee Scarrow) was born November 7, 1902 in Rathwell, MB. She took her schooling at Rathwell and became a telephone operator. She then went to Vancouver and then back to Winnipeg where she received comptometer instruction at Success Business College. Following her studies, she worked at Speirs-Parnell (which became Westons). Whilie in Winnipeg she joined the United Church Central Congregational Choir and the CNR Choral Society. She met Henry Bernard "Harry" Smith (?-1974) at Speirs-Parnell and they were married in 1928. They had no children.
When Harry joined the RCAF in 1939, Margaret went with him to Vancouver and then Saskatoon. They were living in Ladner, BC at the end of the Second World War. While in Saskatoon Margaret was president of the Airmen's Wive Group, and a member of Knox United Church choir. In ladner she was choir leader in the United Church. In 1945, the couple moved to Neepawa, where Harry started a business with Fred Anderson called Smith and Anderson Radio Electric. In Neepawa, Margaret joined the United Church choir, was president of the Missionary Society and the Business & Professional Women's Club, and a member of UCW. Margaret Smith died on January 26, 1999 in Neepawa, MB. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Margaret Ida Oliver Wetherill (nee Mack) was born on May 26, 1912 in the Rural Municipality of Langord. She lived in Oberon from 1912-1967, and then moved to Neepawa. Margaret married Austin Verril Oliver (1904-1971) in 1934 and together they had two children: Stanley and Karen. During her marriage Margaret was a housewife, but she also served as a trustee for the Beautiful Plains School Division and held a number of offices in the Manitoba Farmer's Union from 1955-1968. Following her first husband's death, Margaret married Arnold William Wetherill (1913-1995). The couple enjoyed travelling in their retirement. Margaret Wetherill died between 2006 and 2016. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, MB.

Phyllis Field Cooper was born on July 22, 1894 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended the Chicago Art Institute. Phyllis emigrated to Canada in March 1918, where she worked briefly for Mr. and Mrs. Archie Cooper near Treesbank, MB, before she moved to Winnipeg to teach a juvenile art class connected with the Winnipeg School of Art. In fall 1920, Phyllis went to work in the office of a Winnipeg insurance company. That same year her parents and brother moved to the Treesbank area. Phyllis moved home to work at the Treesbank store, before the entire family moved back to Chicago in 1923.
Phyllis married Archibald Cooper (1868-1953) on August 26, 1933, and the couple moved to Winnipeg. They did not have children. During their time in Winnipeg, Phyllis worked as an interior designer, a vocalist and a writer, writing articles for the Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Tribune. She was a member of the Philharmonic choir in Winnipeg and an Honorary Life Member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club. She moved to Glenboro in 1955, following the death of her husband. In Glenboro she gave piano and art lessons for several years. Phyllis Field Cooper died in August 1987. She is buried at Millford Cemetery in Treesbank, MB.
