Inscription on back: "Nicolet was commissioned to do a series of western scenes for Canada House NY, by the NY Canadian Club. This was a preliminary work done for submission to Canadian Club jurors prior to undertaking his final commission."
This piece was sketched from a CPR train window, January 1964, while the artist was enroute from Brandon to Winnipeg through the Carberry sandhills. It was a hazy morning when land and sky seemed to blend with sun showing through cloud in places. Steve Repa was employed by the Brandon Allied Arts Centre (1962-1964). He commuted to Winnipeg one day weekly to teach (1963-1964) (Bu Art Catalogue, 1983)

The Manitoba Flying Farmers were organized in 1956 in Brandon, Manitoba. Organizational meetings were held in a hanger at the Brandon Flying Club. The first Regional 5 Flying Farmers Convention in Manitoba was held 1961. Nearly 200 people attended the first convention from various provinces and states including: Alberta, Saskatchewan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnisota, Wisconsin, Montana and Colorado. Alberta and Saskatchewan had their own district leaving Manitoba in a district with North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnisota and Wisconsin. In the spring of 1994, Fred McGuinness was contracted by Great Plains Publications to assist with the writing of the centennial publication Old Pathways, New Horizons: A History of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, 1896-1996. Published in 1996, by Great Plains Publications (Winnipeg), Old Pathways, New Horizons is a 111-page illustrated soft cover book.
Custodial History
These materials were donated to the SJ McKee Archives by the Estate of Fred McGuinness circa 2011. The Archives accessioned the records in 2015.
Scope and Content
The subseries consists of two draft manuscripts and two letters of correspondence. Records were generated during the writing of the book Old Pathways, New Horizons: A History of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, 1896-1996. The book was commissioned by the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company and published in 1996 by Great Plains Publishing Limited.
