Arrangement
[Mr. Stuckey put one negative in an envelope and taped the print to the outside of the envelope. We have separated them and numbered the negative CA20(1) and the print CA20(1a).]
In 1901, American entrepreneur Francis Hector Clergue (1856-1939) obtained the charter for the Ontario, Hudson Bay and Western Railway. Following his purchase, he reincoporated the Algoma Central Railway to the Algoma Central and Hudson's Bay Railway. History / Biographical
Wheat City Business College was established in 1904, when J.W. Beveridge and F.E. Werry resigned from the Commercial Department of Brandon College to establish the Wheat City Business College. It was located originally on the top floor of the Commercial Building at 143-10th Street, owned by Hughes and Co. Wheat City Business College continued to operate until the later 1960s. In 1911, the Henderson's Brandon City Directory lists the following teachers on staff: Mamie J. Macdougall, John B. Sample, John H. Snyder, Nettie M. Werry, and F.A. Wood (principal).

Back of postcard reads: A HAPPY XMAS./ and A very propersous / NEW YEAR / F.A. Wood [Principal of the Wheat City Business College]. Postcard is addressed to Miss Allena Coombs, Box 628, City, and has a cancelled one cent green King George stamp postmarked December 23, 1911, Brandon, Man.
Probably the peak of the sawmilling industry in Brandon was "The Big Drive" in 1910, when 125 drivers brought 5 million board feet of timber down the Assiniboine to Hanbury's Mill
Most of these logs were cut in the Riding Mountains in winter and floated down the Little Saskatchewan and Birdtail Rivers to the Assiniboine.

Photograph of west side of 10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, facing northwest. Visible businesses in the Alexandra Block include Doig's, Box Brothers Hardware and Allied Hardware Stores, followed by Simpsons-Sears and Barry Neill Men's Wear in the Strathcona Block. The Johnny Smith Block is visible in the background.
The fountain for people was in the small basin at the rear. From there, wasted water went through a pipe to the large basin in front to be used for dogs and, no doubt, horses on occasion. This was one of two drinking fountains on the fair grounds - the other being by the children's paddling pool just inside the main gate on 13th St. In addition to the two fountains on the fair grounds, there was also one on Eighth St. across from the Baubier Hotel in the early days (Brandon: A City, Barker, p. 52). LAS.
