Former home of J.E. Smith, early farmer, horse breeder and businessman - died 1919. Became city property. To Allied Arts Council 1950's. Arts Centre moved to former Co-op Store, 600 block of Princess Ave. 1984.

The building pictured was built in 1906-1907. Prior to its use as the Public Library, the building housed the Merchants Bank of Canada. The Library left this location in 1984 when it moved to the former Co-op store on 7th Street & Princess Avenue. This building subsequently became the Brandon Chamber of Commerce building in September of 1985. Visible businesses and landmarks include: Beaubier Hotel, YMCA/police station, the original CKX Radio station towers on 8th Street (est. 1928 - moved 1940), the old City Hall, Prince Edward Hotel, and the original Manitoba Power commission smokestack on 10th Street.

The reception was held in fromt of the Brandon City Hall, which was located at 9th Street and Princess Avenue. The photograph is looking south southeast. A portion of the recently constructed Prince Edward Hotel is visible in the background.

Visible businesses include: Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information, Dominion Tire & Radio Co., Steve's Grill, Wally's Taxi, and the garage entrances to Western Motors Ltd.
