Originally built as a courthouse and jail in 1884, the building's use as a courthouse ended with the construction of a new courthouse on 11th Street and Princess Avenue in 1908. It continued to be used as a provincial jail until December 1979.

History / Biographical

Stuckey's notes: Built 1907. Opened 1908. Facing brick from Wisconsin (order 65,000 bricks). I attended this school 1936-1939 Grades 10-12. The building, which is located at 527 Louise Avenue, ceased to be Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI) in the summer of 1974. It was renamed New Era School on the recommendation of Marion Pye, who was a teacher at BCI in its last years. The name "New Era" was also the name of the BCI yearbook.

Photograph is looking north northeast from roughly the corner of Louise Avenue and 6th Street and shows the front of Brandon Collegiate Institute.

History / Biographical

The Brandon Women's Institute was established in 1963, by several women residents in Brandon who had been associated with Women's Institutes in their home communities. The Brandon Women's Institute was established in 1963, received its charter in 1965, and continued in operation until 1992.

Custodial History

Fonds was donated to the Daly House Museum by Mrs. Edna Hammond sometime in the 1990s. The records were retained by Daly House Museum until June 23, 2005, when they were donated to the S.J. McKee Archives.

Scope and Content

Fonds contains records generated in the course of Institute activities including minutes, scrapbooks, miscellaneous reports, publications, newspaper clippings, photographs and correspondence.
