Located about 10 miles west of Brandon on the Little Saskatchewan River, this dam was the first hydroelectric generating station in operation in western Canada. It began supplying power to the city in 1901. This power source, which could not operate in winter, was supplemented by the steam plant on 10th St. By about 1920 the steam plant had been greatly expanded and the hydroelectric plant closed. The old dam was washed out due to a thunder storm in 1948.

Brandon's City Hall and Opera House opened on New Year's Day 1892 with the Annual Fireman's Ball. The exterior of the building was designed by Brandon architect W.R. Marshall. At the south end was the Opera House, an auditorium formed by an internally exposed framework of delicate iron pillars and trusses. Demonlished in 1971, the limestone rubble of the foundations were turned into a sunken garden located in Princess Park.

After demise of the streetcars, a transit system was started by MacArthur Transportation Co. with three routes, an east end loop, a south end loop, and a west end loop, with terminal at 8th St. & Rosser Ave. The E & W was operated as a continuous route with two locally built coach bodies on new Maple Leaf trucks. A secondhand, larger, Leland coach was acquired for the S. end, which was replaced by a large GMC about 1938.

Stuckey's notes: During World War II dances were held nightly on the second floor, well patronized by the boys from RCAF No. 10 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Dauphin and RCAF No. 7 Bombing & Gunnery School (B&G) Paulson. While on course at No. 7 B&G I attended often - great times!
