According to Stuckey and Bain (1996), “The Brandon, Saskatchewan & Hudson’s Bay Railway was built and operated as a totally owned subsidiary of the Great Northern Railway. Construction commenced in late 1905 and by the end of 1905, less than a mile of track had been laid north of the boundary at St. John. In 1906, the remaining 68.6 miles to Brandon were laid and service commenced that year. During the Depression of the 1930s, traffic declined significantly and the entire branch was abandoned in 1936. Over much of the branch’s length, the ties and rails were laid on the prairie without ballast and today little remains of the line apart from traces where there were cuts and bridges.” (p. 18)

CPR 2816 is a class H1b Hudson-type locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930. Having logged more than two million miles in active service, 2816 made its final revenue run on May 26, 1960. After a complete three-year rebuild, 2816 was restored to its original specifications with external details from the 1930/40s, and re-entered active service in 2001 as a roving ambassador for Canadian Pacific Railway. Don LeQuesne, Assistant Professor of Art and Art Education at Brandon College 1962-1965, came here from the Toronto area where he had been Supervisor of Art in the Pickering school system for several years and had taught Art Methods in the Summer School for Teachers at the Ontario College of Education. His parents came to Canada from the Channel Islands. Don grew up at a number of places in Quebec. He obtained the BFA degree from Mount Allison University. This picture was painted while he was on study leave at the University of Georgia in the first half of 1964. (1969 inventory)
Stuckey's notes: Extra 3001-8617 changing crews. Showing all that remains of pre-1911 station. Present yard office on west end was part of extension and rebuild of 1904. Remainder of old station, east end, removed in 1960's to build present crew hostel (bunkhouse).
