Brandon's City Hall and Opera House opened on New Year's Day 1892 with the Annual Fireman's Ball. The exterior of the building was designed by Brandon architect W.R. Marshall. At the south end was the Opera House, an auditorium formed by an internally exposed framework of delicate iron pillars and trusses. Demonlished in 1971, the limestone rubble of the foundations were turned into a sunken garden located in Princess Park.

Photograph shows the 800 block of Rosser Avenue facing west. On the south side of Rosser Avenue the Nation Block, Christie's Bookstore, and Reesor's Clock can be seen. A number of horse and buggies/carriages are travelling along Rosser Avenue.
Photograph shows the west side of 10th Street between Rosser and Princess Avenues in the winter. Visible businesses include: Bottomley's, Simpsons-Sears, Lionel Electric, Allied Hardware Stores, Box Brothers Hardware, Doig's. Painted on the north face of the Strathcona Block are two advertisements, one for Sutherland and Robertson [Grocery] and the other for Boyd Electric Co. Ltd.
Stuckey's notes: Date determination: Engine 93, ex 375 received Series 2 numbering Sept. 1907 and repainting is still clean; some trees have leaves so could be Sept. 1907 but more likely about May 1908.

Photograph is looking west along the CPR tracks. Trains at the station have both freight and passenger cars - freight and baggage is being loaded, while people are both arriving and departing.

Henrietta Hancock taught visual arts at BU from approx.1906-1912 on the 4th floor of Clark Hall/Original Building. Her husband was on faculty and when money got tight the wives resigned. Arts moved into the community and was carried on as the Brandon Arts Club; probably initiated by Henrietta. (1996 inventory)

Inscription: Charles Whitfield Clark, M.D. b. 1845 in New Brunswick; d.1939 in Toronto. Educated in Ontario, and in American Universities. Practiced Homeopathy in Aylmer, Ontario, 1866-82; in Winnipeg, 1883-1912, then in Toronto. An active Baptist layman and advocate of higher education for women, hence Clark Hall. Sub-series consists of correspondence, information, records, press releases, newspaper clippings, booklets, brochures, maps and grants as well as other records associated with government between 1983 and 1993. A large part of the records consists of correspondence, especially between Clark, his constituents, and other members of the government. This correspondence covers all aspects of Canadian society and government departments, including but not limited to: Agriculture; Communications; Environment; External Affairs; Finance; Indian and Northern Affairs; National Defense; Prime Minister; Justice; Transport; Veteran's Affairs; Youth; Status of Women; Housing; Immigration; Industry, Science & Technology; Health & Welfare; Forestry; Fitness, Youth & Amateur Sport; Employment; Federal Provincial Relations; Consumer & Corporate Affairs; Secretary of State; and various other departments, as well as topics dealing with the municipalities that Clark served. Of these, the departments of Agriculture and the Environment are the most widely represented in these records, due to Clark's positions as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture from 1987-1989 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment from 1989-1993.
The records highlight the political climate of Canada, and especially Western Canada, from 1983 to 1993. Many of the records relate to the affairs of constituents in the Brandon-Souris riding and cover a wide variety of topics. The collection spans the entire political career of W. Leland Clark, from the letters congratulating him on his byelection victory in 1983 to his final days in office in 1993.
