Custodial History
Collection was in the possession of Dr. Michael Blanar until he donated the records to the S.J. McKee Archives in May 2002.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of textual records and five microfilm reels related to Dr. Blanar’s post-graduate research. It is assumed that the records were collected during the course of Blanar’s research for his dissertation entitled “Early British Travellers in French Canada (1960).”
Textual records include three Dominion of Canada notebooks containing handwritten Saulteaux verbs, and animate nouns. Included is a dark red booklet titled “Ojibwe.” The book contains Ojibwa translations of English words. The book comes from St. Peter Clavers Industrial School in Spanish, Ontario, and may have acted as an instructional book as it also contains French and English. Collection also contains a transcript of an Ojibwa dictionary and three file folders titled “Manuscripts,’ “John Long Research,” and “Maps” which contain additional research material. Contents of “Manuscript” folder are original typed manuscripts. “John Long” and “Maps” file folders contain copies of materials held at Library and Archives Canada, as well as hand drawn documents and hand written documents detailing contents of folders.
In addition to the textual records there are five microfilm reels. Three microfilm cases are labeled “The British Reference Division,” one case labeled “Public Archives Canada, central microfilm operations,” and the last case is from an unidentified source labeled “Longs voyages and travels”. Four of the five microfilm cases are also numbered. The British Reference Division microfilm case numbered “1346 i 43” contains a copy of a book titled “The Cacique of Ontario.” British Reference Division microfilm case numbered “104706640” contains a copy of a book titled “The Four Kings of Canada.” British Reference Division microfilm case numbered “9073279” contains a copy of a book titled “The Indians.” The Public Archives Canada microfilm case numbered “c-3006” contains copies of original documents in French and English. Documents include letters, diary pages, maps, and business ledgers. Microfilm case labeled “Longs voyages and travels” contains a copy of a book written by John Long titled “Voyages and Travels of Indian Interpreter and Trader.”

Description by Aaron McKay (October 2013). The Ojibwa language dictionary and notebook make references to Fredric Baraga (1797-1868), a missionary priest from Slovenia who recorded the Lake Superior Ojibwa language dialect. Baraga’s findings were published into an Ojibwa language dictionary.
Accession 3-1997 (84 photographs, various diplomas; 1886-1960) contains a variety of photographs of buildings and streetscapes of the 100 block of Tenth Street and various Hughes properties in the city. In addition, there are photographs of the "Founders of Hughes and Co," a parade on Tenth Street in 1924, the Wheat City Business College Hockey Team 1912, three photographs of the Port of Churchill in 1931, three photographs of threshing crews on Hughes and Company property, a Great War military contingent from Brandon including JRC Evans, and four family photographs.

Photograph shows a two-storey wood-framed duplex. The building appears to be situated on a corner. The front verandas have wooden ornamentation and a lattice fence separates the front yards. Flowers and viriginia creeper appear in flower beds along the side of one house.

Scope and Content
Photograph shows the three storey brick terraced property at 12th Street and Lorne Avenue. The entrance/stoop on the west side of the property appears to have been removed and the Lorne Street entrances have been modified (see 3-1997.72 for a comparison). Ivy is growing up the side of the house and the tree on the boulevard have grown and tower above the roof-line. A motor car is parked on Lorne Avenue in front the property.

Photograph shows a two identical wood-framed homes. Both homes are three-stories, with wrap-around porches with a glassed-in sunroom and two gables with wooden sunburst ornamentation. The property on the right has curtains hanging in the porch, the other property has a striped blanket to block the sun. The properties are surrounded by a low chain-link/chicken wire-like fence with wooden posts. Saplings and grass have been planted on the boulevard in front of the properties. The road in front of the houses appears to be unpaved, while the curbs and sidewalks and appear to be concrete.
Photograph shows a two-storey wood-framed house with front porch and sunroom. Above a rocking chair and chez lounge, a Union Jack and pennant hang on the exterior wall on the porch. A five-globed black iron street lamp is on the sidewalk in front of the property. The Wheat City Arena can be seen behind the residence.

Based on the presence of the arena, the location has been identified as 10th Street near Victoria Avenue.
Photograph shows a three-storey multi-family brick house that appears to have at least four units. The structure also has a basement. A group of five men are posing on a stoop on the west side of the building. Sapplings have been planted on the boulevard in front the building.
