Mary Ellen Ross was born in July 1872. She married David Henry Schwalm in Woodstock, Ontario on January 2, 1889. David died ca. 1895, leaving Mary with two small children - Clara Amy and Annie Irene. At some point after 1901, Mary was transferred (the nature of the transfer is unknown although it may amount to a character reference) to the Methodist Church in Brandon, Manitoba from the Central Methodist Church in Toronto. It appears that Mary was back in Woodstock by 1907. By 1911, she and her daughters were living in Toronto.
Custodial History
The items in the collection remained in the possession of Mary Schwalm until her death, at which point they passed to her grandson (Annie Irene's son). Schwalm's great-granddaughter Linda Tripp donated them to the McKee Archives in July 2007.

Collection consists of :
3 photographs (b/w) - includes one of Brandon College c. 1905 and two of unidentified faculty members. The faculty members appear to be from Toronto.
4 Brandon College artifacts - includes a small plate, cream pitcher, sugar bowl and bud vase. All the pieces were made in Germany and have the same drawing of the Brandon College Original Building on them. They are primarily green and yellow in color.
1 drawing - architectural drawing of the front view of Brandon College as it would appear when the Ladies' Building (Clark Hall) was completed in September 1906.
2 letters - both letters were written by J.A. Rankin, Pastor at Central Methodist Church, Toronto re the transfer of Mary Schwalm from the Central Methodis Church on Bloor Street East to Methodist Church, Brandon.

Maude Marie MacDonald (nee Evans) was born on May 23, 1910 in Indian River, Ontario. In 1913, her family moved to Manitoba, settling in the Brookdale area. She attended school in Brookdale and at Brandon College, graduating with a BA in 1930. After graduating from Normal School in Saskatoon, she taught at Justice, Brookdale, Brandon, Kemnay, Ochre River and Carberry, before retiring in 1971. Marie married George MacDonald (1913-1989), who she met while teaching in Ochre River, in June 1937. The couple had three children: Janet, Karen and Donald. In 1951, Marie and George bought Maxhame, a farm near Brookdale. She continued to live on the farm after George died. Marie loved gardening and reading, and in her later years, she enjoyed travelling. Marie MacDonald died on January 25, 1996 in Winnipeg, MB and is buried in Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth Edwards (nee Tweed) was born on April 19, 1897 at Riceville, ON. Within a year of her birth, she and her mother came to Manitoba, to join her father who had already moved west. Mary attended Burns School and then Winnipeg Normal School, graduating in 1917. Over the course of her career she taught at a number of schools, including Otter, Medora, Purple Hill , Thirlstone, Broomhill, Lake Max and Whitewater schools. On January 7, 1920, Mary married Kestle Henry Edwards (1894-1974) in Medora, MB and together the couple had four children: Harvey, Frank, Ralph and Ruth. The family lived on section 35-3-25. Mary was secretary-treasurer of both the Medora Methodist Sunday School and the Royal Templars, taught sunday school and sang in the choir before her marriage. In 1920, she joined the Home Economics Society (later the Women's Institute). She was also a member of the WA. Following her husband's death, Mary left the farm and moved into Medora. Mary Edwards died in 1994. She is buried at Roselawn Cemetery.

Gladys Mary Sharpe (nee Brown) was born on September 10, 1913 at Basswood, MB. She obtained her nurses traning at Brandon and Winnipeg, and worked as an RN from 1938 to 1978. Gladys married Harvey Robert Sharpe (1910-2001) on November 23, 1939, and the couple lived on the Sharpe farm with Harvey's parents, Robert Thom Crawford (1881-1956) and Josie Madeline (nee Hardy) (1880-?). Gladys and Harvey had no children. Gladys Sharpe died on August 1, 2008 in Minnedosa, MB.

Marion Ferguson (nee Patterson) was born April 29, 1911 in Brandon, MB. She took her early education at Brandon before completing nurses training at St Boniface Hospital Winnipeg (1929-1932). Following graduation she worked as a private nurse, then in 1936 did post graduate studies in psychiatry at the Brandon Mental Hospital. In 1936, Marion took a position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Particularly interested in neurology and stomach research, she took additional training and worked as a nurse at the University of Minnesota.
In 1940, she applied at a recruiting centre and joined the RCAF as a nursing sister in uniform. She was posted in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, then established a hospital at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for the Fleet Air Arm before being posted overseas. She worked with Italian Prisoners of War before being moved to the special burn hospital in East Grinstead, England.
After the Second World War, Marion returned to Brandon, where she became part of the teaching unit at Brandon General Hospital and then worked on the children's ward during the polio epidemic. Next, she became the Medical Surgical Supervisor at the Brandon Mental Hospital, then an administrator for the same institution. Marion then taught psyciatry at the Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) for eleven years and helped establish the policy for a two-year training program for registered nurses. She retired in June 1974.
Marion married John Reid "Jock" Ferguson (1907-1986) in 1950. The couple had three children - Mary, Jessica and Robert - while also raising John's four children from his first marriage.
Marion was active in community work, especially with the Royal Canadian Legion. She was the first female president of the local Legion, Branch No. 3 (1971), and worked tirelessly with veterans and their families. For her dedication to the needs of vetrans and their families, Marion was given six different medals from the Royal Canadian Legion. In addition to her work with the Legion, Marion was also the spokesperson for the small community of northeast Brandon and was part of the group that built the Green Acres senior citizens' home. Marion Ferguson died on May 21, 1993 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Mary Jane "Jean" McDonald Cosgrove (nee ?) was born on April 9, 1892 at Langside near Lucknow, ON. Her family came to Manitoba in 1903, where they lived at Reston for five years before settling in Tilston. Jean attended school in both locations, then worked at the post office and as a telephone switchboard operator, then in Eaton's of Winnipeg before marriang Alexander Grant "AG" Cosgrove (1896-1965) on March 1, 1922 in Brandon. Together they had two sons, Douglas Grant and Kenneth. The Cosgrove's farmed at Lyleton for five years before returning to the Tilston farm. From 1929-1932 they operateda boarding house. In 1933, the couple purchased a British American (BA) Service Station and Tea Room in Oak Lake, where they were also agents for Greyhousnd Bus Lines. They retired and moved to Brandon in 1964, for health reasons. In Brandon, Jean lived at Princess Towers and then Central Park Lodge.
Jean was always active in the community. She was a Passt Noble Grand of the Rebekah's and received her Life Membership Certificate from Crocus Lodge No. 8, Virden. She enjoyed golfing, curling and bridge. After the Second World War, she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion in Oak Lake. She was a long time member of the United Church. Jean Cosgrove died on January 13, 1990 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemtery.

Mary Emma McIntosh (nee Graham) was born on April 21, 1906 on 36-12-15 SW. She attended Kennedy district school, Wellwood Consolidated School and Brandon Normal School. A teacher from 1927-1931, she married George Herbert "Herb" McIntosh (1909-1993) on October 4, 1929. They farmed in the Carberry area and together they had five children: Yvonne, Gwen, Linda, Muriel and Ian. Mary and Herb were both community minded. Mary ran for political office, was involved in the Manitoba Farmers Union, serving as Women's president, and sat on the Carberry/North Cypress library board. Mary McIntosh died on March 21, 1990 on the farm in the Harte district.

Mary Milroy (nee?) was born on May 29, 1913 in Camboise, England. Her first husband died in England. Mary married George Smith Milroy (1914-2001) and in 1946, she and her daughter Betty from her first marriage, came to Elkhorn, MB, where George was from. Mary and George had four children together: Margaret, Lillian, George and Cynthia. Mary was a devoted homemaker, who spent some time working as a cook for railway gangs. She enjoyed serving in community and church organizations, including the Legion. Mary Milroy died on November 1, 1995 in Elkhorn, MB. She is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Mary Smigelsky Rauliuk (nee Birin) was born on April 4, 1901 at Oakburn, MB. She was the eldest daugher of John & Anna Birin (Bartoszewski), who came to Canada around 1899 from Austria. The Birin's were Polish speaking. The family moved to Brandon around 1901 and lived in the North End, where John bought and farmed land in the "flats."
Mary grew up in Brandon, attending St. Michael's Academy and Park School. She married Paul Smigelsky (1896-1966) around 1921, and together they had a daughter, Jean. For many years Mary was employed by A.E. McKenzie Seeds Ltd. She and her husband also operated Paul's Grocery store for over 25 years. Following the death of her first husband, Mary married Caister Nicholas Rauliuk (1904-1971). Mary was an active member of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. Mary Rauliuk died on April 27, 1990 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemtery.

Phyllis Field Cooper was born on July 22, 1894 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended the Chicago Art Institute. Phyllis emigrated to Canada in March 1918, where she worked briefly for Mr. and Mrs. Archie Cooper near Treesbank, MB, before she moved to Winnipeg to teach a juvenile art class connected with the Winnipeg School of Art. In fall 1920, Phyllis went to work in the office of a Winnipeg insurance company. That same year her parents and brother moved to the Treesbank area. Phyllis moved home to work at the Treesbank store, before the entire family moved back to Chicago in 1923.
Phyllis married Archibald Cooper (1868-1953) on August 26, 1933, and the couple moved to Winnipeg. They did not have children. During their time in Winnipeg, Phyllis worked as an interior designer, a vocalist and a writer, writing articles for the Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Tribune. She was a member of the Philharmonic choir in Winnipeg and an Honorary Life Member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club. She moved to Glenboro in 1955, following the death of her husband. In Glenboro she gave piano and art lessons for several years. Phyllis Field Cooper died in August 1987. She is buried at Millford Cemetery in Treesbank, MB.
