Elizabeth ? Tully was born on November 5, 1873 in Bruce County, ON to John Patrick Tully and Mary Anne Doran. She married William Kenneth MacKenzie (1872-1935) on July 4, 1900 in Strathclair, MB. Together they had at least four children: Kenneth, John, Gladys and Ellenore. Elizabeth MacKenzie died on November 5, 1968 in Los Angeles, California. She is buried at Rapid City Cemtery.
Ellenore Kathleen (Nora) MacKenzie was born on September 13, 1908 on 36-13-19W in the RM of Saskatchewan to Willam MacKenzie and Elizabeth Tully. She was a school teacher at Glanton School Division, Brandon Hills and Riverview School Division between 1928-1935. She returned to the classroom in Brandon in 1953, retiring in 1972. Nora MacKenzie married John (Jack) Lane (1903-1975) on March 14, 1936 in Brandon, MB. Together they had two children: Robert and Anne. Nora and Jack Lane were pioneers in bluebird conservation in the Westman region. Their work began in the 1950s when the birds were approaching endangered species status. In 1975, following Jack's death, Nora helped organize a society in Brandon called 'Friends of the Bluebirds,' a group of citizen volunteers dedicated to the ongoing survival of bluebirds. In 1982, the society established the John and Nora Lane Award, presented annually to those members who have distinguished themselves in the preservation of the bluebird species. In 1984, Nora moved to Toronto to be closer to family. Nora Lane died on July 19, 2004 in Toronto, ON. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
Robert Kenneth Lane was born on February 7, 1937 to Jack Lane and Nora MacKenzie. Bob grew up in Brandon. Early in his career he worked as a meteorologist in Churchill, MB. He completed his PhD in Oceanography at Oregon State University in 1965, and then spent his entire career with the Canadian federal government, retiring as the Western Regional Environmental Protection Director. Bob married Gail Ann Christianson in Vancouver in 1961, and together they had a son, Chris. Robert Lane died on May 5, 2021 in Edmonton, AB.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Robert Neilson was born on June 15, 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came to Canada with his family in October 1919. They settled briefly in Manor, SK before moving to Brandon, MB in 1920. After high school, Bob worked at Yaeger's Furs and was promoted to general manager. Bob Robert married Margaret McComb (1919-2001) on June 19, 1944 and together they had two daughters, Jean and Linda. From 1969-1975, Bob and Marg owned Eve's Gift Shop, and after the store was sold, they were caretakers at Princess Park and Towers until retiring in 1979. They continued to live at Princess Towers for several years, before moving to Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. Bob and Marg loved spending time at Waskesiu, Clear Lake, and later at Killarney. He was an active member of the Eastern Star, Shriners, Central United Church, K-40, Kinsmen and YMCA, as well as a long time volunteer at Prairie Oasis. Robert Neilson died on August 3, 2006 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Smith was born on March 25, 1901 at Madford-Ingelow, MB. He attended Matheson school and farmed in the Ingelow district. The family farm, 2-12-17, was sold in 1951, and Robert moved to Winnipeg where he was employed with the International Harvester Company and Triange Auto Supply. Robert met Martha Buchanon Thorburn (1917-2010) when they were both Scout leaders and actively involved with Chalmers United Church in Winnipeg. The couple married in 1955, and together they had one son, Alexander. Robert and Martha retired in 1971, and moved to Douglas, MB. Robert Smith died on November 30, 1983 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Robert Strath was born on December 28, 1888 on the farm Mains of Elrich at Auchnagatt, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He attended school in Scotland until he was 12, and then was a farm helper to age 18. He immigrated to Canada in 1907, originally travelling from St. John, NB to Brandon, MB. For the next several years, Bob moved around the provinces of Western Canada working on farms, the railway, in the bush, homesteading and mining. In 1913, he returned to Manitoba, where he began farming For the next fifty years, Bob would farm as a tenant or owner in the Hebron district, Carroll district and at Riverside. He retired to Brandon in 1963, then moved to Souris in 1965. Bob married Selina Gladys Rogers (1896-1975) on November 14, 1917 in Souris, MB and together they had five children: George, Russell, Jim, Roberta and Donald. Robert Strath died on March 17, 1987 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery.

Charles Robert Turner was born on March 8, 1912 on the family farm near Wellwood, MB. Charles left home in 1929, working as bank clerk in Pipestone and Minto before returning to Wellwood in 1935. During World War II he spent three years in the RCAF as part of the War Assets Corp out of the Neepawa airport. Charles married Nora Emma Graham (1916-1999) on October 19, 1940 and together they had five children: Jane, George, Michael, Patrick and Bill. The family lived on the farm at Wellwood until 1992, when Charles and Nora moved to Carberry. Charles Turner died in 1995. He is buried at Wellwood Cemetery.

Robert James (RJ) Campbell was born on January 16, 1905 on Section 14-11-23 in the RM of Woodworth. He attended Education Point School. RJ worked in the Rivers area on a number of farms, then in 1925 went to Regina and worked in a garage. He returned to Manitoba shortly thereafter to work on his uncle's farm and then on the home farm with his mother until 1935. RJ married Edith Marian Bell (1913-2010) on December 23, 1937, and together they had two sons: Cordell and Urschel.
The family lived on the farm in the Brierwood district south of Harding until 1946, when they moved to Halls Bridge district north of Griswold where they continued to farm until 2006. RJ built all of the buildings on the farm including "Halls Bridge Dance Garden" in 1966. He loved to sing square dance calls, and along with Marian, travelled a great deal in North America and Europe, as well as a trip to the Soviet Union. Due to ill health, RJ moved to Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home in 2006. Robert Campbell died on February 14, 2007 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Griswold Cemetery.

Thomas James (T.J.) Pentland, son of John Pentland and Jane Finnegan, was born January 4, 1858. He died January 8, 1919 in Justice, MB. T.J. married Annie Isabel McVety on July 22, 1885 in High Bluff, MB. Together they had six children: John Alfred (Fred); Henry Herbert McVety (Harry); Annie Ethel; Eliza Evelyn; Thomas Elton Wesley (Wesley); and Mary Agnes Grace Isabel (Gracie).
Annie Isabel McVety was born at Seaforth, ON in 1859 and came to High Bluff, MB with her family in 1882. She died in October of 1938 in Justice, MB.
John Alfred (Fred) Pentland was born on July 5, 1886 in Douglas, MB. He was mortally wounded during the Passchedale campaign - 3rd battle of Ypres. He died on September 13, 1917 at Camiers Hospital, France.
Henry Herbert McVety (Harry) Pentland was born on November 10, 1887 in Douglas, MB. He died on June 26, 1948 in Brandon, MB. Harry married Mary Emma Irene (Irene) Fleming, daughter of John Jr. and Martha McLaughlin Fleming on November 22, 1913 in Brandon. Together they had three children: Harry Clare (Clare); Olive Eunice Irene (Eunice); and Shirley Margaret Marie.
Eliza Evelyn (Evelyn) Pentland was bon February 7, 1892 in Justice, MB. She died on May 28, 1986 in Brandon, MB. Evelyn married Norman Wallace Thompson on July 22, 1914 in Justice, MB. Together they had six children: Norman Cecil; Muriel Isabel; Norma Evelyn Jean; James Alfred; Marguerite Beryl; and Helen Elaine.

Mary Anne Alice "Daisy" Patmore was born on March 30, 1903 in Brandon, MB. She was the eldest of five children born to Henry Lewis Patrmore and Alice Maud Mary Ball. Patmore purchased a tree nursery in Brandon in 1888, and was a leading exponent of shelterbelts and tree planting, as well as a leading figure in beautifying the city of Brandon. Daisy attended Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI) and the Brandon Normal School. She taught for one year and then joined the family business, Patmore Nurserview Ltd. and Patmore's Florists; Daisy owned and operated the floral part of the business and was a floral designer from 1934 until she retired in 1973. During these years, she was very active in the International School of Floral Design; she also spoke and gave demonstrations about floral arrangements for many clubs and associations. Daisy was a member of the Quota Club, the Natual History Society of Brandon and the Brandon Horitcultural Association, as well as a member of St. George's Anglican Church and the Anglican Church Women's Group. For many years she was the alternate organist for the Church and played at services at the Brandon Mental Health Centre and Fairview Personal Care Home. Daisy never married. Daisy Patmore died on August 21, 1999 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

David Andrew Brown was born on October 30, 1894 near Dumfries, Scotland. His family arrived in Canada in 1908 and settled on a farm east of Deloraine, MB in the Hazeldean district. David attended Manitoba Agriculture College, graduating in 1920. Following graduation he was appointed assistant to the professor of horticulture and was given responsibility for directing all the experimental work with vegetables, fruits and flowers, as well as upkeep of the College campus. He briefly accepted a teaching position in botany in the Teulon, Gunton and Balmoral high schools, before becoming the assistant superintendent of the Federal Government Station in Mordon, MB in 1922. David married Edith Merle McKenzie (1900-1995) on July 22, 1922 and together they had three children: Ian, Dorothy and Shirley.
In 1928, David moved from the Morden Experimental Farm to take the position of supervisor of illustration stations at the Brandon Experimental Farm. In this role he travelled the province planting experimental cereal crops and working to reclaim soil lost to erosion during the draught of the 1930s. In 1947, he became the assistant superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1959. Following his retirement, David was instrumental in establisting the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was very active in this organization until he was involved in an accident in March 1988. David was a life member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada and served terms as the president of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists and the Manitoba Horticultural Society. He was also a well-known landscape planner for many Brandon residents and rural homesteads, a judge at local summer horticultural fairs and a member of Knox United Church, where he served as a choir member, an elder on the church board and as clerk of session. In 1977, the University of Manitoba conferred the honorary degree of L.L.D. upon him to acknowledge his oustanding contribution to agriculture in Manitoba. David Brown died on July 4, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Ernest Arthur "Birk" Birkinshaw was born on November 24, 1908 in Rapid City, MB. He attended United College in Winnipeg, completing a degree in mathematics, before joining the faculty at Brandon College, later Brandon University, in 1931. A member of the Department of Mathematics his entire career, Birkinshaw took postgraduate studies at the Institute of Technology, Pasadena and the University of Toronto. He retired from Brandon University in 1975, and was granted the title of Professor Emeritus. Birkinshaw married Kathleen Egilsson (1916-1966) and they had one daughter, Sigrid. Ernest Birkinshaw died suddenly in North Delta, BC on November 24, 1986 and is buried at Victory Memorial Park in Surrey, BC.

Edith Mary Vallender (nee Stoodley) was born on November 27, 1891 in Swansea, South Wales. She arrived in Canada on July 14, 1919, and settled in the Oak Lake, MB area where she lived until her death. Edith was a houswife, who married William George Vallender (1882-1957) on September 12, 1918 at Horsley, Gloucestershire, England. Vallender had immigrated to Canada in 1913 and worked on a farm north of Oak Lake before enlisting in the 107th Battalion. The couple were married while he was on leave. They had no children. In Oak Lake, Edith was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion #79 and a charter member of the same. She was also a life member of the United Church Women's group and a dedicated worker for the Red Cross in World War II. For years, Edith was a prize winner at the Oak Lake Fair in baking, fancywork and other classes. Edith Vallender died on May 10, 1989 in Virden, MB. She is buried at Oak Lake Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.

Effie Irene McPhail (nee Weir) was born on October 31, 1900 is Rossland, BC. In 1903, her family moved to Manitoba and Effie spent the rest of her life in Brandon and the surrounding area. Growing up in the Hunter district northwest of Brandon, she attended school there and then in Brandon. A graduate of the Brandon Normal School, Effie began teaching at the age of 16, and taught at Roseland School and in Rapid City and Rivers. Effie married Alex McPhail (1897-1989) on March 29, 1923. The couple farmed in the Forrest district and raised four children: Ronald, Malcom, Archie and Donna. The McPhails were both very active in many community, church, sports, agricultural and political organizations. Effie was involved in the Brandon Council of Women, the United Church Women, the Liberal Party, and the Assiniboine Historical Society. She was also one of the founding members of the Daly House Mueum. Effie was the Chair of the Westman Oral History Association's "Voices of Yesteryear" project, which produced a collection of audio recordings of Westman-area residents. She herself interviewed a number of individuals and was interviewed twice, once on her family history and life experiences and the other on early church development in Brandon. Effie McPhail died on July 7, 1999 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

Eileen May McFadden was born on July 6, 1930 on section 18-12-20 in the Rural Municipality of Daly. Eileen attended Rivers Consolidated School and then Wheat City Business College. In 1949, she enrolled at Brandon College, graduating with a BA in 1953. She completed her bachelor of library science degree from McGill University in 1954, and her MLS from the University of Toronto in 1978. In 1954-1956, she worked in the library at the University of Toronto and from 1956-1959, in the library at the University of Manitoba. In 1959, she was appointed Director of Library Services at Brandon College/Brandon University, a position she held until 1977. In 1978, she was appointed University Archivist, a position she held until her retirement in 1997. Active in provincial and national library organizations, Eileen was also involved in historical and women's organizations and was a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Manitoba Liberal Association. In 1990, she recieved the Women of Distinction award from YWCA. She never married. Eileen McFadden died on August 24, 2011 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rivers Cemetery.

Frederick Clayton Courtice was born on Septebmer 7, 1901 in Wawanesa, MB. Raised in Brandon, he attended Alexander, King George, and Central schools, as well as Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI). He began his career as a bookkeeper in the Merchants Bank in 1916, later becoming an accountant in the Bank of Montreal. He then worked as the office manager for Frank Massin for twenty-one years, before resigning due to his health. Frank then formed a partnership with Clarence Baker as farm dealers for Imperial Oil. He remained with this business until 1954. He served one term (1955-1956) as an alderman on the Brandon City Council, and then became the manager of the Wheat City Arena. Starting in 1957, when the city took over operations of the public transit system, he became the first manager of the Brandon transit department. In retirement, Fred focused on woodwworking, especialy building grandfather clocks. Fred served on the Brandon housing and parking authority, as well as the Brandon University Board of Governers. He was a charter member of the Brandon Kinsmen Club, which was founded in 1925, a member of the Navy League during World War II, and a member of the Masonic Lodge for over sixty years. Fred married Thelma Irene Smith (1903-1976) in 1925 and together they had three children: James, Noel and Norma Elaine. Fred Courtice died on September 3, 1987 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Guy Masson "Bay" Smith was born on June 7, 1899 in Glenboro, MB. He graduated from Glenboro High School and then relieved his father in the post office while the latter served on a Military Tribunal. Bay enlisted with the Royal Air Force in 1918. For a short time he was the manager of a cream buying station in Glenboro before moving to Corning, SK in 1924, where he was an agent for Imperial Oil. In 1929, Bay returned to Glenboro to take over the Post Office duties from his mother, Elizabeth Alice Smith. Smith was appointed postmaster in 1950, and continued in that position until he retired in 1965. Under his leadership, a new post office was built in 1954; upon his retirement he sold the Smith Block and Post Office building. Smith married Mayme McKnight (1899-1977) in December 1923 and together they raised two children: Tannys and Robert.
Bay was active in community life. He was a charter member of the local Kiwanis Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served long tenures on the Rink Committee, the Glenboro branch of the Red Cross and the Glenboro Board of Trade. He was a past president of the Junior and Senior Bands, was Secretary of the South Cypress Centennial Committee, and treasurer of the annual Fun Fair. He was a founding member of and helped design the local course at the Glenboro Golf Club. Bay Smith died on September 16, 1997 in Glenboro, MB.
