Ethel Elizabeth Mary Allen (nee Baker) was born on June 30, 1915 on Springhill Farm in the RM of Rosedale. She attended Springhill School and Neepawa Collegiate. An accomplished pianist, she formed a band with her brothers and together they played many dances. Ethel married William Allen (1902-1964) in June 1938 and together they had one son, Larry. Following the marriage, the couple lived in the residence at Howden elevator where Bill was the elevator agent for the Ogilvie company. Ethel helped Bill with bookkeeping. When Bill died, Ethel moved to Neepawa, where she worked for the Osborone Senior Citizens Home for a number of years. A long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter No. 11, Ethel enjoyed curling, sewing and travel. Ethel Allen died on May 14, 2001 in Neepawa, MB. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

John (Jack) Hunter was born on April 6, 1910 on the farm at Moline, MB to John Hunter and Florence Currie. A life-long farmer, Jack never married. He and his sister Dorothy remained on the farm, and looked after their parents and their aunt Molly. The siblings retired to Rapid City, MB in 1975. Jack Hunter died on June 3, 1991 in Minnedosa, MB. He is buried at Rapid City Cemetery.

John Hepworth was born on April 5, 1911 at Shoal Lake, MB. He attended Agricultural College at the University of Manitoba and farmed the Hepworth family farm near Menzie. John married Helen Douglas Morton (1915-2008) in 1935, and together they had two daughters, Heather and Jill. The family moved to Shoal Lake in 1945, and John continued farming from town until retiring in 1974. John was actve in the Shoal Lake community, participating in curling and golf, and referring minor hockey. He was a long-time member of the Boards of Directors of Shoal Lake Hospital and of Morley House; he was actively involved in the establishment of the latter, and the Lions Wing addition. Within St. Paul's Anglican Church, John served on the vestry and for a term as People's Warden. John Hepworth died on September 2, 1995 at Shoal Lake, MB. He is buried at Shoal Lake Cemetery.

John Oldcorn was born on December 29, 1910 in Victoria, BC. His family moved to Manitoba the following year and homesteaded at Cordova until 1918. John then lived in Neepawa (1918-1926) and Franklin (1926-1943), farming with his father before settling at Forrest in 1943.
Marjorie Jean Robertson was born on January 7, 1923 in Minnedosa, MB. She attended school in Cordova and Mentmore before taking Grade 11 in Franklin. Following her education, Marj took a secretarial jb at the Manitoba Legislature. She met John Oldcorn at Franklin and they were married on November 23, 1943. Together they had two sons, Robert and Claude. During these years, Marj was active in the Forrest United Church and 4-H. She was also an avid curler and was a member of the Brandon Curling Club for many years.
John Oldcorn died on October 24, 1986 at his home, RR5 Brandon, MB. Following his death Marj enjoyed relationships with Sanford Cochrane, and after his death, with Cliff Thompson. Marj left the farm in 2004, and moved to Parkview in Brandon, and then Fairview Personal Care Home. Marjorie Oldcorn died on September 4, 2010. John and Marjorie Oldcorn are buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

John Peters was born on November 7, 1918 in Hague, SK. He moved to the Broodkale area in 1941, and then the Minnedosa area. Hazel Sayward was born on January 5, 1929 in Brandon, MB. Her family lived on a farm northeast of Moore Park. Hazel attended school in Moore Park, then in the Brookdale district but eventually quit school to help on the farm. John and Hazel married in November 1943, and together they had two children: Connie and Perry. The couple farmed in the Oberon district, then moved to Duddenhoffer farm, which later became part of the Langford Community Pasture. They managed the government pasture from 1948-1979. Hazel and John then retired on their own farm beside the community pasture. John Peters died on January 21, 2011. Hazel Peters died on January 14, 1917. The are both buried at Riverside Cemetery.

John Duncan McDonald was born on April 30, 1893 in Brandon, MB. He attended Winterton and Basswood schools. John married Margaret Emily Greer (1894-1980) in the Greer home in the Moline district in 1917. Together they had four children: Sadie Julia Elva, Robert James, John Elmer and Roy Peter. From 1919-1965, he farmed at Basswood, MB on SW 36-14-20. John McDonald died on January 11, 1989. He is buried at Basswood Cemetery.

John Gordon (Jack) Beddome was born on August 29, 1910 in the Odanah Municipality of Manitoba. He attended Hazelwood School. Jack farmed SW 32-14-17 and SW 16-14-17, and served on the Hazelwood School Board for ten years. Jack married Agnes May Harland (1909-1995) on October 29, 1940. Together they had three children: Marilyn, Marjorie and Gordon. Jack Beddome died in 1990. He is buried at Minnedosa Cemetery.

John Taylor McGregor was born on January 6, 1904 in North Brandon, in the RM of Elton. He received his education at Grand Valley School, Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI) and Brandon College. John began farming in 1926, and continued until 1969. During his farming years he also worked as a steam engineer at Shilo. He retired to Brandon. John was a member of Toastmasters No. 293, the Assiboine Historical Society and a founding member of the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame. He also contributed to Daly House Museum and wrote many pioneer stories, some of which were published by the Brandon Sun. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Brandon.
John married Clara Louise Barber (1901-1965) in 1936. Following her death, he married Brandon school teacher Isabelle Johnston (1907-1989). There were no children for either couple. John McGregor died on December 21, 1988 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Annie McLean (nee Hubbard) was born on January 4, 1895 in Dunville, ON. She came to the Virden, MB district with her family in 1896. Annie attended school in Virden and then worked as a telephone operator. In 1913, she married Frederick Middleton McLean (1885-1962) and the couple farmed in the Hargrave district until retiring to Elkhorn in 1957. Together they raised five boys: Lem, Ray, Bud, Dale and Glen. Annie was a member of Hargrave United Church and of Unit S of St. Paul's UCW. Her later years were spent in Virden. Annie McLean died on September 24, 1984 in Virden, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Anthony Simbalist was born on November 25, 1912 in Czahor, West Ukraine. He immigrated to Canada with his family in June 1921, and they settled in Brandon, MB. Anthony attended Brandon schools and graduated from the Brandon Normal School. He taught school in the Glen Elmo district in Manitoba for three years, but felt his real vocation lay in the priesthood. He entered St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto and was ordained on June 15, 1941 in St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg. His first parish was Cudworth, SK (1941-1943), after which he served as Bishops Secretary in Winnipeg for four years. Following that, Fr. Anthony served parishes in Fort William, Prince Albert, Hamilton, where he built a church and school complex, Kenora, Montreal and Thunder Bay. He also served as an Army Chaplain Captain in the reserve forces in Hamilton. On May 15, 1969, he was elevated in rank as Archpriest (Monsignor). Fr. Anthony retired in 1981, and returned to Brandon. The Very Reverend Archpriest Anthony Simbalist died on December 10, 1988 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Arthur Galbraith was born on May 20, 1894 in Hartney, MB. He attended school in Hartney and then Agricultural College in Winnipeg from 1915-1917. Art began faming with his father in 1910, and officially took over the farm in 1923. He continued to farm until 1958. Although not a registered veterinarian, Art learned about vet work from Dr. Rud in Hartney, and his services were wideley used in the district. Art married Verna Mabel Glover (1900-1973) on April 9, 1924. Together they raised four children: Robert, Marjorie, Anna and Lorna. On January 20, 1979, Art married Lavinia May Russell (nee Hodgson) (1912-2001). Art served as Reeve of Cameron Municipality from 1946-1975, and was also a member of the Orange Lodge, the Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and the United Church. Arthur Galbraith died on March 4, 1993. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Aubrey Henderson "Aub" Hume was born on January 21, 1903 in Oak River, MB. Aub lived his live in the Oak River community, first travelling for Imperial Oil and then running Hume's Hardware. Aub married Gwendolen Phyllis Salmon (1906-1983) on May 26, 1938 and together they raised two children: Jack and Margaret. Aub was very active in baseball and curling, and was made a life member of the Manitoba Curling Association. He was also a member of the United Commercial Travellers (UCT) for 57 years. Aubrey Hume died on February 18, 1987 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Oak River Cemetery.

Ida Beatrice "Bea" Carr (nee Johnson) was born on December 23, 1912 in Brandon, MB. Bea attended school in Brandon, including Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI). She worked at Doig's in downtown Brandon for many years, retiring in 1976. Bea married Thomas George Carr (1905-1992) in 1943. They had no children. Bea was a member of Central United Church and the UCW. She was also a member of the Teck Chapter of the IODEI and loved playing golf and bridge. Beatrice Carr died on November 11, 1995 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Bessie Dawson Simmons (nee Madill) was born on June 18, 1907 in Minto, MB. Bessie taught at Lakelet School from 1926-1929. She married Ernest Simmons (1903-1976) in 1929. The couple had three sons: Bill, Jim and Don. In the early years of their marriage the family lived in Minnedosa, before the Depression prompted a move to Bethany, NW 2-16-17. Bessie was recognized for her musical talent. She played the church organ for 28 years and played the piano for many concerts and gatherings. She was active in the ACW, was a lifetime member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association and worked tirelessly for her community. She was also recognized a a resident historian on local history affairs for Bethany and district. Bessie Simmons died on January 31, 1995. She is buried at Boyd Cemetery.

Elizabeth Catherine "Betty" Burton (nee Lowe) was born on July 1, 1916 in Clandeboye, MB. A teacher from 1935-1941, Betty became a housewife after her marriage to George William Burton (1909-1979) on September 25, 1941. The couple raised three children, Kathryn, Barbara and Jon, on their farm in the Forrest district. Bill retired from farming in 1979 due to ill health and the couple moved to Brandon. Betty Burton died on January 11, 2014 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Scott Beverly "Bev" Sherman was born on January 15, 1919 on the NW1/2 of section 28-4-26 near Melita, MB. He attended schools in Melita and Brandon, before moving to Gibson's Landing, BC in 1936. He served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War as a wireless operator. Following the war he spent almost ten years as a glazier before becoming a federal radio operator in Vancouver and throughout BC. He then took a position as the BC and Yukon regional rep for the Public Service Alliance of Canada in 1965. He retired in 1980, and thereafter devoted himself to volunteering with the Genealogical Society, the 411 Seniors Centre and the Federal Superannuates. Bev married Phyllis May Dery (1921-2009) in 1945 in Hedley, BC, and together the couple raised five children: Brian, Lynn, Glen, Carol and Alan. Beverly Sherman died on January 21, 2009 in Vancouver, BC.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.

Item is an audiocassette tape containing Beverly Sherman reminiscing about his life and early education in Melita and Brandon. There is no interviewer per say, but the recording came about through a conversation Sherman had with Lillian Mummery.

John C. "Jack" Kingsmill was born on April 24, 1891 at Browk, near Ashford, Kent, England. He arrived in Canada in 1906, and his family settled at Miami, MB briefly before moving to Carman and finally Souris in 1909. Jack served in World War I (1915-1918) with the 16th Fusiliers from Souris, but otherwise spent his life farming. On November 11, 1919, Jack married Elva Jane Carlisle (1898-1977) and together they raised two daughters: Hazel and Iris. Jack Kingsmill died on March 11, 1983 in Winnipeg, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
