Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Malinowski (nee Edwards) was born on April 5, 1926 in Bury, Lancashire, England. She met her husband Kazimar John "Kaz" Malinowski (1917-1977) at age 18, while at a dance while he was on leave. One week after meeting her husband-to-be, Molly was engaged. After a two-year engagement, Molly and Kaz were married. Kaz returned to Canada before Molly and set up their homestead in Saskatchewan. Molly set sail to Canada and arrived at her new home in Saskatchewan on August 1, 1945. The couple had three children: twins Kenneth and Christine and Barry. Kenneth died at birth. Molly and Kaz spent several years on the farm before relocating to Winnipeg (1954-1957) when Kaz re-enlisted in the Army. In 1957, the family was transferred to Germany, and later to Camp Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick. During this time, Molly joined the United Church. Kaz's final posting was to Shilo, MB, and the family moved to Brandon. In Brandon, Molly joined the U.C.W. She also bowled in the Five Pin Thursday afternoon league, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at Prairie Oasis. She also loved to travel. Molly married Donald Charles Rollins (1920-2004) in 1987 or 1988. Molly Rollins (Malinowski) died on Aprill 22, 2011 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
Freda Josephine Sheridan (nee Miles) was born on January 31, 1913 in London, England. Raised in Blackham, Kent, she was educated as a nurse and spent time in the early years of World War II working at Seven Oakes Hospital, near Brighton. Freda met her husband, William Sheridan (1909-1983), a Canadian from Hamiota, MB, while visiting relatives. Bill and Freda were married in 1942 and Freda began the process of immigrating to Canada. Freda travelled to Canada with the last convoy of ships that sailed prior to the end of World War II in April 1945. She arrived in Hamiota after three weeks of travel, including 14 days of travel by sea. Bill arrived back in Canada four months after Freda, and the couple set up a homestead on a farm in the local area. The couple had four children: Terry, Michael, Carol and Kathy. The family left Hamiota in 1954, and moved to Brandon, MB. Freda was a member of the War Brides Group of Brandon and the Salvation Army Home League. Freda Sheridan died on April 23, 1998 in Brandon. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

William MacFarlane "Bill" Geiler was born on February 18, 1927 at Dauphin, MB. He came to live in Brandon when his father Felix formed Manitoba Motor Transit in September 1933. When his father passed away, Bill became President and General Manager of the company. He sold the business to Grey Goose Bus Line in 1969. Bill became a caretaker at Manitoba Public Insurance in 1978, retiring in 1992. Bill enjoyed, golfing, fishing and reading. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Kinsmen Club. Bill married Jacqueline June Roberts (1929-2020) on February 7, 1949, and together they had three children: Phil, Linda and Nancy. William Geiler died on June 6, 2001 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

William George Vallender was born on December 16, 1892 in Gloucestershire, England. He arrived in Oak Lake, MB in June 1913, and began working on farms in the area. During the First World War he trained at Camp Hughes and served overseas with the 107th Battalion, "Glen Campbell's Timberwolves." William married Eidth Stoodley (1891-?) on September 12, 1918 at Horsley, Gloucestershire. The couple did not have children. Upon his discharge in 1919, the William and Edith returned to the Oak Lake area, where William continued as a farm hand until 1929, when he went to work for Adam Stewart as a mechanic. In 1936, he became the custodian for Oakwood School custodian. William was a member of Oak Lake Citizen's Band, the C.O.F. and a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion #79. William Vallender died on March 9, 1987 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Oak Lake Cemetery.

George William Hardwick was born on December 1, 1891 near Nesbitt, MB. Bill received his schooling locally, then continued in Brandon. In 1916, he joined the Army and served overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Upon his discharge in 1919, he returned to the family farm where he remained for most of his life. Bill did not marry. William Hardwick died on May 1, 1996 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Minnewawa Cemetery.

William John Jordan was born on September 19, 1899 on SW 18-10-24 northwest of Oak Lake, MB. He was educated at Blair School. As a young man he farmed tor several years near Woodnorth, MB. Will married Cora Elizabeth Leech (1903-1990) on June 30, 1920 and together they had six children: Gladys, Muriel, Aubrey, Ralph, Faye and Garry. They also raised their nephew Harold. Will and Cora farmed, first at N 1/2 15-9-27, and then starting in June 1927, on the Jordan home farm. In later years, they spent their winters at Oak Lake. Following his retirement, Will lived in Oak Lake full time. Will was very active in the Oak Lake Seniors Group, enjoyed gardening and trips to the farm. William Jordan died on February 25, 1996 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Johnston Cemetery at Oak Lake, MB.

William John Montgomery was born on March 5, 1903 in Elkhorn, MB. He was educated at McAlonen School. Bill married Elsie Sarah Elizabeth Leslie (1905-1998) in 1932, and together they had two sons, John Douglas and William Garry. The couple lived and farmed on section 24-11-28, until retiring to Elkhorn in 1974. Bill served as president of the Elkhorn fair and also as a municpal councillor. William Montgomery died in early 1989. He is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Kendric Hambly Williams was born on November 16, 1900 on Section 14-3-27 W in the RM of Arthur. The family moved to Melita in 1906. Kendric attended Peninsula School and then school in Melita before the family returned to their farm in 1915. Kendric began farming full-time with his father John in 1917. When his father died in 1931, he continue to operate the farm for his mother, but due to condition in the Depression the Manitoba Farm Loans foreclosed on the property; he conintued to rent the land unti l1937, when we started to repurchase. He moved to Melita in 1954, and rented the farm, before selling the farm to Bill Tilbury and Corny Klassen. During this period he also worked as an inspector under the Prairie Farm Assistance Program. In retirement he volunteered a great deal of his time to the Antler River Historical Museum. He never married. Kendric Williams died on December 25, 1986 in Melita, MB. He is buried at Melita Cemetery.

William Wallace was born in Scotland around 1859. In 1881, when William was twenty-two, he emigrated to Canada with his father and brother. Once here they settled near what is today Forrest, Manitoba. The following spring they moved to the northwest margin of settlement in Manitoba, homesteading in the Shellmouth area. Wallace remained a resident of the region for the rest of his life. William Wallace was active in community affairs. He was appointed to the post of Secretary-Treasurer of the Shellmouth Municipality in 1887, and he held the position until 1904. In 1909, Wallace was injured in a railway accident, and he had to give up farming. He moved to Shellmouth and took up the position of postmaster, which he held for twenty-seven years. He died in 1945, and is buried at Shellmouth cemetery, Manitoba.
Custodial History
The letters contained in the fonds remained in the possession of Margaret Wallace, who was the original recipient of the correspondence. She emigrated to Canada in 1904. At some point the letters passed to William Wallace who kept them in his possession in Shellmouth. In 1941, William contacted Professor E. J. Westcott of Brandon College regarding the fonds. He offered it to the College for safekeeping. Westcott accepted the letters. Westcott passed the letters on to various officers and staff at Brandon College and then Brandon University. Since 1982, the collection has resided in the S. J. McKee Archives at Brandon University.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of hundreds of letters that William Wallace and his brother, Andrew, wrote to their sister, Maggie, from 1881 until 1904. The first letter, dated 22 March 1881, was written by both William and Andrew aboard the S.S. Prussia as they sailed to North America from Scotland. The last letter was written on 4 January 1904 by William. It was written to inform Maggie and her husband that William had reserved a homestead in their name. This letter marks the end of the fonds. Later that spring Maggie and John emigrated to Canada to be with her family.
William was keenly interested in everything going on around him; his letters and Andrew's reveal what life was like for inexperienced settlers on the Canadian agricultural frontier in the last years of the ninteenth century. Fonds touches on a variety of social, political and economic themes.

William Archibald Branton was from High River, Alberta. He attended Brandon College, graduating in 1910. Following graduation he returned to Alberta where he became Building Superintendent and Chief Architect for the Calgray Public School Board (1911-1957).

Laurence Overton "Laurie" East was born in the municipality of Odanah on the west half of 29-13-18, on March 13, 1911. He attended Tremaine and Roseneath schools and worked on the family farm, eventually leaving school to work due to his father's ill health and then taking over the operation in 1936, after his father died. Laurie retired from farming in 1976. Laurie married Bernice McDonald (1916-2006), a teacher, on July 4, 1942. They had no children. Laurie's hobbies were music, dancing and travel; he took part in local entertainment and taught square dancing classes. He was a member of the Hunterville United Church, serving on the board and volunteering as Sunday School Superintendent or teacher. In the 1940s, Laurie was part of local commmittees to secure telephone and postal service. From 1970-1983, he was a member of Elton Municipal Council. Shortly after joining the council, Laurie was appointed as a representive to the library board; he joined representatives from Minnedosa and Minto councils, as there was support in the region for the organization and establishment of a regional library. Laurie East died on April 18, 2003 in Brandon, MB and is buried at the Rapid City Cemetery.

Maude Marie MacDonald (nee Evans) was born on May 23, 1910 in Indian River, Ontario. In 1913, her family moved to Manitoba, settling in the Brookdale area. She attended school in Brookdale and at Brandon College, graduating with a BA in 1930. After graduating from Normal School in Saskatoon, she taught at Justice, Brookdale, Brandon, Kemnay, Ochre River and Carberry, before retiring in 1971. Marie married George MacDonald (1913-1989), who she met while teaching in Ochre River, in June 1937. The couple had three children: Janet, Karen and Donald. In 1951, Marie and George bought Maxhame, a farm near Brookdale. She continued to live on the farm after George died. Marie loved gardening and reading, and in her later years, she enjoyed travelling. Marie MacDonald died on January 25, 1996 in Winnipeg, MB and is buried in Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Janet Mortimer Seward (nee Anderson) was born on May 5, 1898 at Crown Hill, near Barrie, ON. She graduated with her RN from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie in 1921. Coming to Brandon in 1927, she became a graduate of the first post-graduate class in pyschiatric nuring at the Brandon Mental Hospital. In 1929, she became superintendent of nurses at that same institution. She stepped down from her position when she married Ernest Seward (1877-1949), a widower, in 1934, but following her husband's death, she resumed her nursing career, finally retiring in 1966. The couple had no children. An active member of St. George's Anglican Church, she also volunteered for the Red Cross. Janet Seward died on June 14, 1991 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Mary Evelyne Conley (nee Dixon) was born on November 30, 1919 in Carievale, SK. She lived in Carievale until 1940, at which point she moved to Brandon, MB. In Brandon she received her nurses training, graduating as an RN in 1943, and then working at Brandon General Hospital (BGH). In 1945, she moved to Toronto where she continued working as a nurse and also married Murray Ross Conley (1919-1998) on April 21, 1945. The couple had three children: Judith, Sharon and Bradley. After a year in Toronto, Evelyne returned to Brandon to raise her family and work as a private nurse at BGH. She retired from Fairview Personal Care Home in 1971, to care for her son, who developed multiple sclerosis (MS) in his 20s. This experience precipitated Evelyne's involvement with the MS Society. Evelyne Conley died on September 3, 2013 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Herbert "Herb" Lazenby was born in 1885 in Lincolnshire, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1903, making his way to Reston, MB. He was a farmer who married Elsie Mae Wilson (1890-1971). Together they had three children: George, Alvin and a daughter who died at birth. Herb Lazenby died in 1949 and is buried in the Reston Cemetery. The narrator, Irene Luella Smeltz Lazenby (1915-1998), was the wife of Herb and Elsie's son George. They married in 1942.

Albert Leronowich was born on March 18, 1894 in Poland. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 and spent time in Calgary, AB and Oak Lake, MB before settling in Brandon, MB. Albert spent some time farming, before holding a number of positions with the Canadian Pacific Railway, including rail section man, fireman, and brakeman; he retired as a CPR boilermaker in 1959. Following retirement, Albert spent a few years as gardener of the Brandon City Hall grounds. He was a member of the Brandon Horticultural Society and was avidly interested in growing flowers, winning many tropies and prizes for his efforts. Albert married Stella Polnick (1903-1975) and together they had six children: Mark, Charles, Edward, Donald, Anne and Gladys. Albert Leronowich died on March 20, 1988 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Alva Redell "Alvie" Spafford was born on March 15, 1891 at Enterprise, MB. He attended school at Victoria Lake and Henderson schools. Alvie left Enterprise in 1902, and moved to Bannerman, MB, where he farmed until 1936. He later moved to Boissevain, where he worked as a Rawleigh salesman, and then in 1942, he moved to Brandon and was employed as a conductor for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) until his retirement. Alvie married Frances Ethel Harrison (1895-1979) and they had three children: Carl, Edna and Raymond. Alvie Spafford died on August 25, 1985 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Killarney and District Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.
