John Dickson (b. 17 Mar 1854, Scotland; d.15 April 1926, Brandon) was considered one of Brandon’s pioneer dentists. Dickson immigrated to Canada in 1857, where he lived in Hamilton, Ontario, for a number of years. Dickson then came to Manitoba and operated a grocery in Chater before he studied dentistry, graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1886. Photograph is of a girl and a boy standing amongst sweet peas in a backyard garden. A clothes line is visible in the foreground. The children, Mary and Stanley, are possibly those of Brandon dentist John Dickson.

Joseph Donaldson's Ltd. Food Market appears in the Henderson's Brandon City Directory from 1906 to 1929. Donaldson's main meat/butcher shop was located at 813 Rosser Avenue. A second branch was opened by 1914 at 228 Rosser Avenue but relocated to 654 Tenth Street by 1917. The branch relocated by 1921 to 662 Tenth Street where it remained until ca.1929. This address was referred to as the "Busy Corner" in the Henderson's Directory. In 1931, butcher Ted Hill appears to have taken over the Donaldson's establishments.

Photograph shows George Pope sitting in a backyard. Standing next to him is Isabella Louise McGuinness (Pope). A young girl, perhaps Ruth McGuinness, is standing over a stroller. A wood pile and garden plants can be seen in the backyard. An advertisement for Joseph Donaldson's Ltd Food Markets can be seen on a business beside the residence.

Writing on the back of the photograph reads: This is mum her uncle George Pope who came to Brandon in 1880 (I think) in the back yard of 708-10th Street. It looked like Ruth in the lower right corner. I was interested in the Donaldson advertising.
Following the Second World War, Canada assisted with the resettlement of Europe's homeless. Orders in Council were passed between July 1947 and October 1948 that permitted the entry of 45,000 "displaced persons," who were referred to as "New Canadians" upon their arrival. The International Peace Garden is situated on the international border between Manitoba and North Dakota, adjacent to the Canadian Border Services Boissevain port of entry and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency's Dunseith port of entry. The dedication for the International Peace Garden was held on July 14, 1932. It was estimated that 50,000 people were in attendance on opening day. The park is 9.5-square kilometers or 3.54-square miles.

Photograph shows large crowds surrounding a stone cairn draped in American and Union Jack flags. According to the International Peace Garden website, the pictured cairn was built from stones gathered from Manitoba and North Dakota. The crowds gathered for the 1932 dedication of the International Peace Garden.

The party may have been assembled for the founding of the Brandon University School of Music's Queen Elizabeth II building.

Writing on the back of the photograph reads: Ab Gowanlock 85 years old of Dauphin, two-time winner of the Brier (once in 1938 at Toronto and once in Sudbury in 1953) at the wheel of a Rumley Oil Pull tractor during the Thursday afternoon parade of steam and oil and gas tractors. Mr. Gowanlock is not a newcomer to threshing as he was involved with it on a regular basis from 1916 to 1947. dirk...shot directly into sun and was hard to print...

Thomas "Tommy" Clement Douglas (1904-1986) was a Baptist minister and social democratic politician. In 1935, he became a member of parliament representing the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). From 1944 to 1961, he served as Saskatchewan's seventh premier whose CCF party introduced the universal health care program. In 1961 Douglas returned to federal politics, where he served as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). He remained in federal politics until 1979.
Scope and Content
Photograph shows Saskatchewan premier Tommy Douglas at a microphone. Behind him are large ionic columns on which a "Saskatchewan Day" wooden banner is mounted. Mounted on the frieze above the columns is another sign that partially reads "National Exhibition."
