Notes: View includes former Empire Brewery, [then] in use by Bell Bottling Co.; Safe crossing over the CPR eliminated the need for a flagman. "Telltails" warn switchmen riding on top of railcars of low overhead clearance. Old Empire Brewery was (late 1950's) a feed mill, making grain feeds for livestock.

History / Biographical: Zink's Food Store was opened by Albert Zink in 1932 at 361 1st Street in Brandon's east end. The straightforward form and construction of the building - stucco over wood frame - was typical of such ventures, allowing for large signage at the front and clear open spaces within. Refurbished in 1999 as Chyrel's Tea Room, the building was designated Manitoba Municipal Heritage Site No. 220 on October 29, 2001. At present (August 2008), it is the site of Teahan's Corner.

History / Biographical: This store, the first established in Brandon (June 12, 1881), was erected on the southeast corner of 6th St. & Pacific Avenue, facing Pacific.; Coombs and Steward later opened a store on the northeast corner of 9th St. & Rosser Ave.; Billy Muir was Coombs & Stewart's first clerk. He later opened a store of his own on the west side of the 100 block of 6th St., which he operated for nearly 50 years. (I was often a customer as a kid - LAS). Billy Muir closed his 6th Street store June 1945 (Brandon Sun). [See E18]
