William Wallace was born in Scotland around 1859. In 1881, when William was twenty-two, he emigrated to Canada with his father and brother. Once here they settled near what is today Forrest, Manitoba. The following spring they moved to the northwest margin of settlement in Manitoba, homesteading in the Shellmouth area. Wallace remained a resident of the region for the rest of his life. William Wallace was active in community affairs. He was appointed to the post of Secretary-Treasurer of the Shellmouth Municipality in 1887, and he held the position until 1904. In 1909, Wallace was injured in a railway accident, and he had to give up farming. He moved to Shellmouth and took up the position of postmaster, which he held for twenty-seven years. He died in 1945, and is buried at Shellmouth cemetery, Manitoba.
Custodial History
The letters contained in the fonds remained in the possession of Margaret Wallace, who was the original recipient of the correspondence. She emigrated to Canada in 1904. At some point the letters passed to William Wallace who kept them in his possession in Shellmouth. In 1941, William contacted Professor E. J. Westcott of Brandon College regarding the fonds. He offered it to the College for safekeeping. Westcott accepted the letters. Westcott passed the letters on to various officers and staff at Brandon College and then Brandon University. Since 1982, the collection has resided in the S. J. McKee Archives at Brandon University.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of hundreds of letters that William Wallace and his brother, Andrew, wrote to their sister, Maggie, from 1881 until 1904. The first letter, dated 22 March 1881, was written by both William and Andrew aboard the S.S. Prussia as they sailed to North America from Scotland. The last letter was written on 4 January 1904 by William. It was written to inform Maggie and her husband that William had reserved a homestead in their name. This letter marks the end of the fonds. Later that spring Maggie and John emigrated to Canada to be with her family.
William was keenly interested in everything going on around him; his letters and Andrew's reveal what life was like for inexperienced settlers on the Canadian agricultural frontier in the last years of the ninteenth century. Fonds touches on a variety of social, political and economic themes.

William Frederick McGUINNESS (b. 22 August 1884 – d. 18 March 1933) was born in Ottawa and graduated with honors from the Willis School of Accountancy in that city. He moved with his family to Manitoba and worked as a cashier with the CPR Express Office from 1900 to 1905. From 1906 to 1911, he worked as a clerk with the Dominion Express Company. In 1910, William married Isabella Louisa POPE and they would have six children: Mary Charlotte, Dorreene Louise, Kathleen Ruth, Frederick George, Orma Grace, and Carol. From 1914-1919, W.F. McGuinness was the secretary-treasurer of the Hanbury Hardware Company; by 1921, he was the general manager. In 1925, W.F. McGuinness was manager of the Manitoba Hardware Company Limited and by 1927 he was the Company’s secretary-treasurer. He was also a member of a number of service clubs and fraternal organizations. From 1919-1923, he served as a director of the Manitoba Winter Fair and Fat Stock Show, representing the Manitoba Poultry Association. He was also a Mason and was involved with Brandon’s Council of the Board of Trade, Brandon Curling Club (1927 treasurer), and the Lawn Bowling Club. W.F. McGuinness passed away at the age of 49 after suffering from an infection for eight months, a complication resulting from influenza. He is interred in the Brandon Municipal Cemetery (Section 22, Block D, Plot 48).

William MacFarlane "Bill" Geiler was born on February 18, 1927 at Dauphin, MB. He came to live in Brandon when his father Felix formed Manitoba Motor Transit in September 1933. When his father passed away, Bill became President and General Manager of the company. He sold the business to Grey Goose Bus Line in 1969. Bill became a caretaker at Manitoba Public Insurance in 1978, retiring in 1992. Bill enjoyed, golfing, fishing and reading. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Kinsmen Club. Bill married Jacqueline June Roberts (1929-2020) on February 7, 1949, and together they had three children: Phil, Linda and Nancy. William Geiler died on June 6, 2001 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

William Sheridan was born on December 14, 1909 in Hamiota, MB. William lived in Hamiota until 1938, spent a year in Alberta and then served overseas with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. Up until 1939, William had been a handyman but while enlisted in the military he worked as service personnel. Following the war, William returned to the Hamiota district where he farmed until 1952. Moving to Brandon in 1964, he was then employed at CFB Shilo until retiring in 1974. William married Freda Josephine Fry (1913-1998) in Bexhill, England on August 6, 1942. The couple had four children: Terry, Michael, Carol and Kathy. William Sheridan died on April 7, 1983 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

William George Vallender was born on December 16, 1892 in Gloucestershire, England. He arrived in Oak Lake, MB in June 1913, and began working on farms in the area. During the First World War he trained at Camp Hughes and served overseas with the 107th Battalion, "Glen Campbell's Timberwolves." William married Eidth Stoodley (1891-?) on September 12, 1918 at Horsley, Gloucestershire. The couple did not have children. Upon his discharge in 1919, the William and Edith returned to the Oak Lake area, where William continued as a farm hand until 1929, when he went to work for Adam Stewart as a mechanic. In 1936, he became the custodian for Oakwood School custodian. William was a member of Oak Lake Citizen's Band, the C.O.F. and a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion #79. William Vallender died on March 9, 1987 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Oak Lake Cemetery.

George William Hardwick was born on December 1, 1891 near Nesbitt, MB. Bill received his schooling locally, then continued in Brandon. In 1916, he joined the Army and served overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Upon his discharge in 1919, he returned to the family farm where he remained for most of his life. Bill did not marry. William Hardwick died on May 1, 1996 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Minnewawa Cemetery.

William John Jordan was born on September 19, 1899 on SW 18-10-24 northwest of Oak Lake, MB. He was educated at Blair School. As a young man he farmed tor several years near Woodnorth, MB. Will married Cora Elizabeth Leech (1903-1990) on June 30, 1920 and together they had six children: Gladys, Muriel, Aubrey, Ralph, Faye and Garry. They also raised their nephew Harold. Will and Cora farmed, first at N 1/2 15-9-27, and then starting in June 1927, on the Jordan home farm. In later years, they spent their winters at Oak Lake. Following his retirement, Will lived in Oak Lake full time. Will was very active in the Oak Lake Seniors Group, enjoyed gardening and trips to the farm. William Jordan died on February 25, 1996 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Johnston Cemetery at Oak Lake, MB.

The International Toastmistress Club was officially organized in October of 1938, in California by Ernestine White. White thought that communication was the key to success in government, business, and community service. The purpose of the club was to help women gain communication and leadership skills. The North Central Region of the International Toastmistress Club began with the formation of the Winnipeg Toastmistress Club in 1946-47. This club was the first Toastmistress Club in Manitoba and the second club in Canada. The idea of forming a Toastmistress Club in Winnipeg came partly from some members of the Toastmaster Club in the city who had heard of the women's club formed in California. Other North Central Toastmistress Clubs soon followed, including more clubs in Winnipeg, and others throughout southern and central Manitoba, such as the Yellow Quill (Portage), Fort La Bosse (Virden), Colleen (Killarney), Cornucopia (Neepawa), Dauphin, Prairie Horizons (Brandon), Valley Echoes (Swan River), Urban Acres (Brandon), and Kinrossie (Souris) Toastmistress Clubs. The North Central Region was renamed the Land O'Lakes Region in 1966. In 1985, the International Toastmistress Club became the International Training in Communication organization.

Scope and Content
Fonds includes a scrapbook made by the Urban Acres Toastmistress Club of Brandon, which spans the years 1963-1977. The scrapbook includes pictures, newspaper clippings, and programs. The fonds also includes the minutes of the Urban Acres Club from 1973-1986 and the club's reports from 1964-1986. A large number of newsletters such as the C4 News, Land O'Lakes Schooner, Ten-Talk, The Communicator, Pieces of Eight, and The Gavel, running from 1967-1990, as well as the official newsletter of the International Toastmistress Club "Toastmistress" from 1963-1972 are included. Fonds contains a history of the Winnipeg Toastmistress Club, as well as a history of the North Central Region, which later became the Land O'Lakes Region. There are also brief histories of the Yellow Quill, Urban Acres, Greenmantle, and Nellie McClung Toastmistress Clubs. Included in the fonds are bylaws and standing rules of the Land O'Lakes clubs, as well as the charters of the Yellow Quill, Colleen, Cornucopia, Fort La Bosse, Dauphin, and Prairie Horizons Clubs. A large part of the record consists of the minutes from international and regional meetings for the years 1969 to 1988. The fonds includes a public relations survey from the Land O'Lakes Region 1977-78, evaluations of various council meetings, Land O'Lakes' agendas and budgets from 1980-1985, and lists of Land O'Lakes executives. Finally, the fonds contains reports from various Land O'Lakes clubs from 1968-1992, as well as Land O'Lakes rosters from 1979-1985.
These records were produced between 1984 and 1985, the researching and writing period for the book The Pride of the Land: An Affectionate History of Brandon’s Agricultural Exhibition. Published in 1985 by Peguis Books (Winnipeg), Pride of the Land is a 222-page soft cover book, containing hundreds of pictures, and 50,000 words of text.
BU faculty members Dr. Kenneth “Ken” Stephen Coates, Assistant Professor of History, and Mr. Fred McGuinness, Lecturer in Journalism, authored the book. Assisting the writers was a research team of four BU history students, which were referred to as “The Pride Team”: Diane Fowler, Rob McGarva, Bruce Stafeld, and Byron Williams.
The Pride Team was tasked with collecting and synthesizing exhibition documents and other materials in city, provincial, and federal records spanning 100 years. Many local newspapers and committee minutes were consulted.
The authors cover 103 years of Brandon Fair history, starting with the first fair in 1882 followed by the development of other agricultural fairs and exhibitions in Brandon, specifically The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, and the Ag-Ex livestock show.
Custodial History
Records were collected and created by McGuinness, Coates, and The Pride Research Team during the process of the creation of the book, The Pride of the Land: An Affectionate History of Brandon’s Agricultural Exhibition. The materials were donated to the SJ McKee Archives by the authors circa 1988. The Archives accessioned the records in 2008.
Scope and Content
The subseries consists of textual records, created and collected during the production of the monograph Pride of the Land. It includes research cards created by the research team, copies of newspaper articles from very early editions of Brandon newspapers (such as the Brandon Sun, Brandon Daily Sun, Western Sun, and The Independent), copies of fair/organizational minutes, photocopies of photographs used in the publication, and chapter drafts. Of particular interest are the detailed summaries of Provincial Exhibition minutes that were specifically produced for each book chapter.
