John Hanbury came to Brandon in January 1882. For the next decade he operated a contracting business, constructing several Brandon buildings including the post office, the Merchants Block, and the General Hospital. In 1892, Hanbury founded the Hanbury Manufacturing Company. The most important industry in Brandon from 1900-1914, Hanbury’s employed over 150 men in logging, lumbering and the manufacturing of doors, windows, furniture and other house fixtures.
With offices, a warehouse and lumber mill on either side of Assiniboine Avenue at 6th Street North, Hanbury’s relied on timber from northern forests that was moved, raft-like, down river by drivers. Cabinets, furniture and other millwork was sold out of the Hanbury Hardware Co. building on 7th Street and Pacific Avenue. John Hanbury left Brandon in 1910, although his son continued to operate the business until World War I.
Residential buildings were constructed on the company lands on Assiniboine Avenue west of 6th Street North in the late 1920s; the building east of 6th Street was used first as the Christie’s School Supplies warehouse (1929-1939) and then by successive woollen mills (1941-1991). A portion of what appears to be the original building currently stands vacant on the site. The hardware building on Pacific Avenue has been primarily used by the Government Liquor Control Commission (1929-1971) and Christie’s School Supplies, now Christie’s Office Plus (early 1940s – present).

Jim Lanigan and his siblings beleived that Hanbury Manufacturing Company is where their paternal grandfather James Joseph Lanigan worked and learned the glazing trade. James Joseph's father James and brother Albert Daniel may have also worked there. Both Joe and Bert went to work for the CPR in Brandon in 1898. Jim Lanigan could not identify any family members in the group portrait.
Hanbury Manufacturing Company Ltd. was established in 1881. Its office was located on Assiniboine Avenue and 6th Street North, with its warehouse and mills at 603 Assiniboine Avenue.

In the period leading up to World War I, Brandon, due to its excellent railway connections, was also home to branch offices of a number of large manufacturing companies during this period. Among those manufacturing outfits were William Gray & Sons Co. Ltd., and Mason Campbell Company. Based in Chatham, ON, these companies were leading manufacturers of carriages, sleighs and light wagons and fanning mills respectively. Constructed in 1907, by Giddings and Wyman for approximately $15,000, the four-storey structure was located at 801 Pacific Avenue and was shared by the two companies.
In response to the new technology of the gasoline engine, Wm. Gray & Sons entered into a partnership with the Dort Motor Company, of Flint, MI in 1915, and began designing and producing the Gray-Dort automobile; Mason Campbell’s Chatham plant became the assembly plant for the Gray-Dort. Production of the car spanned nearly ten years with over 20,000 Gray Dorts made. The company had over 300 dealers across the country, including one in Brandon.
In 1924, the Dort Motor Company decided to cease production, sending the Gray Company into significant debt. They were forced to close their doors in 1925, when Gray was unable to find a suitable partner to manufacture the car.
Following the closure of Gray-Campbell Ltd., portions of the warehouse were used by a number of businesses between 1925 - 1948, including farm and agricultural implement concerns Canadian Stover Co., Cameron & Rathwell, and Case (J.I.) Co. Ltd., the McKay Fruit Co. Ltd., Brazzell Motors, AC Bateman (electrician), Samuel Coxe (veterinarian) and Burns & Co. Ltd (packing house and egg grading station).
In 1949, the warehouse was taken over by Canada Grocers Ltd., who remained until 1973, when the building became Kullberg’s Big Warehouse. When Kullberg’s moved their warehouse to the old International Harvester building in 2004, the Wm. Gray & Sons Co. Ltd. building was torn down.

Postcard was sent to Chuck Wilson's aunt, Mrs. W.M. Wilson in Creelman, SK by the McKenzie Seed Company in 1912. Chuck Wilson found the postcard in some of his aunt's papers in 2009 and mailed it to the McKee Archives.
Scope and Content
Item consists of a colour postcard of the McKenzie Seed Company building located on the west side of the 100 block of 9th Street. The card was sent to Mrs. W.M. Wilson of Creelman, SK to acknowledge her order.
Writing on the front of the card reads: A.E. McKenzie Co., Limited, Seedsmen, Brandon, Man
The Brandon Club, designed in 1904 by local architect and builder W.R. Marshall, was Brandon's oldest chartered club. It was located at 158 11th Street. In the early years as an exclusive institution, the club boased such notable members as Sir Clifford Sifton, Senator J.N. Kirchoffer, and Sir R.P. Roblin. The Brandon Club closed its doors c. 2005. At present (June 2007), it is the future home of Lennon Trilogy, professional land surveyors.
