History / Biographical
John Dickson (b. 17 Mar 1854, Scotland; d.15 April 1926, Brandon) was considered one of Brandon’s pioneer dentists. Dickson immigrated to Canada in 1857, where he lived in Hamilton, Ontario, for a number of years. Dickson then came to Manitoba and operated a grocery in Chater before he studied dentistry, graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1886. Dickson settled in Brandon where he married Anna Louise Harrison on 28 December 1891. (Source: “Pioneer Dentist of Brandon in Dr. John Dickson,” Brandon Daily Sun 16 Apr 1926).
The couple had four children: Mrs. Irving Cross [Mary Louise, b.20 Dec 1892, Brandon; d. 22 Oct 1981, Saratoga, NY]; Dr. John Harrison Dickson [b. 26 Aug 1894, Brandon; d. 17 June 1956, Killarney]; Dr. Stanley Rodgers Dickson [b. 18 Feb 1896, Brandon; d. 25 July 1963, Brandon]; and Mrs. Emile Baldeschweiler [Isobel Marion Coates, b. 13 Nov 1900, Brandon; d.?] of New York. Scope and Content
Photograph shows three children standing on a residential street in front of a large woodframed home surrounded by a white picket fence. Two girls are wearing winter overcoats and a boy is wearing a winter jacket. The trees are covered in hoarfrost and snow lines the streets. The children are possibly those of Brandon dentist Dr. John Dickson who resided at 342-8th Street.

Mark 7 Hobbycrafts and Religious Supplies was located in the Security Building at 21 on 10th Street. The business appears to have opened on October 31 1966 and was owned by Lorne Baldrow. The previous owner of the store was Agusuta E. Wing and had called the store the Christian Book and Music Center. The store appears to have closed around 1969 when Lorne and his wife Edna moved to Calgary.

Tenants in 1968 included: the John Howard Society, Brandon Emergency Measures Organization, Viscount Optical, Kent's Accordion College, and Loch Lomond Knitwear Lts.

Mark Cousins was born on January 28, 1894 in Sneighton Heights, Yorkshire, England. In 1905, at the urging of an uncle who was already there, the family moved to Canada. They landed at Halifax before travelling to Elkhorn, MB. Mark's schooling began in England but continued at the school in Elkhorn. Mark farmed with his parents at a few locations before settling in the Mossgiel district. Mark married Pauline "Polly" Wouchuk (1910-?) in 1928 and they continuted farming the home farm until 1964, when they retired and moved to Elkhorn. Together the couple raised four children: Douglas, Mildred, William and Betty. In 1967, Mark was presented with an honorary life membership from the Elkhorn Agricultural Society. He was also an honorary life member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Mark Cousins died on May 25, 1987 in Elkhorn, MB. He is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.
Custodial History
As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. These copies compose the collection held in the McKee Archives.
