Charles Robert Turner was born on March 8, 1912 on the family farm near Wellwood, MB. Charles left home in 1929, working as bank clerk in Pipestone and Minto before returning to Wellwood in 1935. During World War II he spent three years in the RCAF as part of the War Assets Corp out of the Neepawa airport. Charles married Nora Emma Graham (1916-1999) on October 19, 1940 and together they had five children: Jane, George, Michael, Patrick and Bill. The family lived on the farm at Wellwood until 1992, when Charles and Nora moved to Carberry. Charles Turner died in 1995. He is buried at Wellwood Cemetery.

The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. William Charles Curle was born on January 30, 1910 on the NW section of 24-12-18 near Justice, MB. A farmer until 1960, Charles then entered the construction business. He married Helga Rosa Johnson (1913-1981) on November 19, 1937 and together hey had six children: Gerald, Dennis, Gaynor, Caroline, David, and Terry. The couple lived at Justice until 1967, then moved to Winnipeg. Charles Curle died on September 23, 1989 in Winnipeg, MB. He was survived by his second wife Delores. He is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

Charles Sage was born around 1898. He farmed just west of his father's farm near Neepawa, MB. Charlie was always active in community affairs and for some years operated a threshing outfit run by steam engine, threshing for serveral neighbours. With his first wife, Bessie Georgina Martin (1906?-1933), he had a daughter Joan. Charlie maried his sister-in-law Vera Maud Martin (1913-2012) in 1935, and together they had a son, Edward. Charlie enjoyed dancing and playing the violin, as well as various sports. Charles Sage died in 1978 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Charles Wayland Lightbody was born in Kansas in 1904. He spent part of his childhood in Brandon, MB where his father worked in the agricultural sector. He obtained his B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1924 and spent 1924-1925 at the Univeristy of Tornoto working on an M.A. degree. In 1925, heentered Worcester College, Oxford as the Rhodes Scholar for Saskatchwan and recived an honors B.A. from that institution in 1928. During 1929-1930, he studied at Harvard University.
From 1930 to 1942, Lightbody was an instructor and assistant professor of history at St.Lawrence University. During that period he also recieved his M.A. from Oxford (1936) and completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University. In 1942 and 1943, Lightbody was engaged in research for the U.S. Army; in 1944 and 1945 he resumed public lecturing, broadcasting and writing. Following the war he spent three years at his home in Chappaqua, New York concentrating on historical research.
Lightbody joined the faculty of the University of Saskatchwan in 1948, leaving in 1962. He spent a year that the Univeristy of Regina before coming to Brandon College in 1963, where he was made head of the History Department in 1964. He was on sick leave for most of his last year at Brandon University.
Charles Wayland Lightbody died in Brandon, MB on January 8, 1970.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Leonard Salisbury Evans was born on August 19, 1929 in Winnipeg, MB and was educated at the University of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba, Simon Fraser University and the University of Ottawa. He was employed as an economist and a professor of economics before entering political life. Evans first ran for public office in the Canadian federal election of 1953 as a candidate for the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in the constituency of St Boniface. Evans was elected to the Manitoba legislature as a New Democrat in the provincial election of 1969 in the constituency of Brandon East. He was appointed Minister of Mines and Natural Resources in the Edward Schreyer government. Later he assumed the position of Minister of Industry and Commerce. He occupied this position until the defeat of the Schreyer government in 1977. Evans was re-elected in the provincial elections of 1973 and 1977. Following the return to government of the New Democratic Party in 1981-1988, Evans held various senior cabinet posts. Evans served as opposition finance critic from 1988 to 1999. Evans retired from active politics with the 1999 provincial election.
Custodial History
These records were created during the 1990s and held in the Brandon East constuency office until they were brought to the S.J. McKee Archives by Drew Caldwell in November 2003. Drew Caldwell succeeded Len Evans as the MLA for Brandon East in the 1999 provincial election.

Collection consists of correspondence between Evans and various constituents on a wide range of topics - personal and otherwise - and subject files on social, economic and political matters relevant to Brandon East.
