Myrtle Bell Johnston (nee Smeltz) was born January 23, 1906 on the home farm near Cromer, MB. She attended Elm Valley school and then Virden Collegiate. From 1921-1923, she helped her father on the farm before attending Brandon Normal School. Following graduation, she taught in at Rugby, near Forrest, Ravine, near Lenore, Johnstone near Oak Lake and at Oak Lake for 13.5 years. In 1938, Myrtle married Henry Alexander Johnston (1906?-1986) and together they had one son, Wayne. The couple farmed in the St. David's district. Myrtle returned to teaching in 1959, at Sioux Valley and then Oak Lake. She retired in 1971. The Johnston's retired to Virden in 1972.
Myrtle received the Province of Manitoba Good Citizen Award for "exemplifying a way of life that helps make Manitoba a better place in which to live." She had many hobbies, including gardening, travel, lawn bowling, piano, bridge, curling, and enteratining. She was also active in church and community choirs. Myrtle Johnston died on January 7, 2001 in Virden, MB. She is buried at the Johnston family cemetery.

Nellie Frances Forbes was born on October 22, 1920 in Brandon, MB to Ira and Fannie Forbes. She attended Fleming and Earl Oxford schools, obtaining her grade 10, before taking a business course to become a stenographer. She worked for Canada Credit Bureau, Harwood Limited, Powell Equipment and then for the Brandon School Division, retiring in 1980. Nellie was very active in the Church of the Nazarene, where she was a Charter Member and taught Sunday School. Nellie never married. Nellie Forbes died on December 20, 2005 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Nelson Menno Shoemaker was born on February 17, 1911 on NE 33-25-23 near Grandview, MB. He received his elementary schooling at Artemesia School, then took high school in Grandview. He came to Neepawa in May 1931, where he worked as a Watkins salesman. During the Second World War, Nelson became a Wawanesa Insurance agent. He later was a partner in the insurance and real estate firm of Shoemaker-McGilvray Agencies. In 1958, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a member of the Liberal Party. He was re-elected in 1959, 1962 and 1966, before being defeated in 1969. He was awarded a Canadian Centennial Medal in 1967, in recognition of this community service.
Nelson married Edith Emma Ford (1903-1999) on June 29, 1933, and together they had two daughters: Penelope Lynn and Erin Diane. Nelson served as the Sectretary-Treasurer of the Neepawa Curling Club, as director of Associated Hospitals of Manitoba, and as an alderman for the Town of Neepawa. He was also a member of the Neepawa Lions Club, Neepawa Curling Club, the Manitoba Real Estate Board and the Insurance Agent's Association of Manitoba. Nelson Shoemaker died on June 10, 2003 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Norman George McGregor was born on February 6, 1898 in Maida, North Dakota. He moved to Waskada, MB at the urging of his uncle Hiram Hannah, in November 1920. A lifelong farmer, Norman married Mary Estelle Spence (1900-2003) on December 6, 1927, and together they had four sons: Bob, Les, Charles and George. Norman McGregor died in 1991. He is buried at Waskada Cemetery.

Pat married Edith Dorning (1921-2003) on July 7, 1951, and they lived on Russell Street in the city. They had no children. In 1970, in recognition of his commitment to St. Augustine's Church, Pat was Knighted by Pope Paul VI, as a Knight Commander in the Order of St. Gregory. Pat was active in the St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus and Sierra Club. In 2009, Pat moved to Rideau Park. Sir Patrick O'Sullivan died on July 9, 2011 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Pearl Hill MacDonald (nee Donogh) was born on January 29, 1891 on a farm in the Souris & Griswold area of Manitoba. From 1912-1915, she took nurses training at Brandon General Hospital. She then worked in Ninette, MB at the Sanitorium from 1923-192, before returning to Branond where she worked at the Brandon Nursing Home until retiring in 1972. Pearl married Alexander Shaw MacDonald (1886-1961) in 1919, and raised a stepson. Pearl MacDonald died on December 6, 1990 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Peter M Martens was born on August 22, 1909 in Zaporizka, Ukraine. He came to Canada with his parents, grandfather and brothers in 1926, when the Russian government made it impossible for Mennonites to enjoy religious freedom. Peter married Margaret Unger (1912-2003) on November 17, 1935 and together they had five sons: Henry, Jacob, Peter, Walter and Arthur. Peter farmed, first with his parents, then at 9-1-16, then at 21-1-16. He and Margaret retired to the village of Lena in 1968. Peter Martens died on October 19, 1990 in Killarney, MB. He is buried at Killarney and District Cemetery.

Ralph Rowan was born on April 12, 1912 in Melville, SK. His mother was a pioneer of the Brandon district in Manitoba and the family returned there in 1914. In 1918, the Rowan family moved to Elkhorn, then to the Arawana district. Ralph attended school in Arawana, as well as Springvale School. When he was 18, he moved with his parents to Kirkella onto section 7-12-29. Ralph married Ellen (Nellie) Oliver (1912-2011) in 1935, and the couple moved to Fleming, SK where they started farming. The Rowan's had five children: William, Arlene, Darwin, Dorothy and Lyle. They moved to the Woodville School District southwest of Elkhorn. During their time near Elkhorn the family fored a small orchestra and provided music for dances in the area. Ralph served on the school board, the local Pool board and became active in the Farmers' Union, serving seven years on the provincial board in Winnipeg. He was also active in the New Democratic Party (NDP), running as a candidate in the Virden constituency. In 1967, Ralph and Nellie moved to Elkhorn, where they ran a small holding of horses, pigs and cattle for personal use. Ralph Rowan died in November 2004 in Elkhorn, MB. He is buried at Fleming Cemetery in Fleming, SK.

Reginald Lamont Johnson was born on April 13, 1902 at Beresford, MB. He attended Glenvale and Beresford schools, although the First World War interrupted his schooling. Reg took over the family farm and ran it until selling and retiring to the Souris district in 1966. Reg married Mary C Campbell (1901-1993) on October 31, 1928, and together they had two sons: Douglas and Wayne. Reg was secretary of the Beresford Pool Elevator for 25 years and had a keen interest in flowers. Reg Johnson died on March 8, 1983 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.

Rex Whitney Thomas Carter was born on August 4, 1904 in Acton, England near London. He immigrated to Canada with his family in July 1910 and they homesteaded at Million, MB. Rex received his education in Million, Banff, AB and Winnipeg. Rex married Minnie Hindle (1919-2019) on November 5, 1938 in Dauphin, MB. Together they had four children: Marilyn, Dorothy, Donald and Linda. The family made their home on the farm in Million until moving to the Mentmore district in 1943, and then a year later to a farm at Brookdale. In 1976, the couple moved to Neepawa where Rex became the custodian at the Legion Hall. He retired in 1980. Rex was an avid card player and loved dancing. Rex Carter died on June 23, 1995 in Neepawa, MB. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Robert John Coates was born on December 30, 1908 on the home farm in the Elm Valley district. He took his schooling at Elm Valley and Virden. He received Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba. Bob married Margaret Grace Cullen (1915-2007) in 1936 and together they had two children: Karen and John. Bob began his teaching career as principal in Pierson, MB, later moving to Ninga as principal. During the Second World War he joined the RCAF, serving as a navigation officer and teaching pilots in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war, the family moved to Brandon where Bob taught at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), Earl Haig, Earl Oxford and was principal at Central School. He was the first principal at Green Acres School, teaching there until retiring in 1973. Bob was made a Brandon Diocesan Layreader of the Anglican Church and spent years taking services throughout the Diocese.
Bob served as president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, Brandon Local, The Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, the Brandon PC Association and the UN Association. He also served as executive member of the International School Masters Club, The Manitoba Teachers' Society Pensions Committee, Men's Canadian Club and the Westman Oral History Association. He served as Chairman of the Local MTS Pension Committee and on the board of directors of Hobbs Manor. Bob was a lifetime member of the Mantioba Teachers' Society and the Brandon Teachers' Society, as well as a charter member of the Assiniboine Historical Society, the Daly House Museum, and the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. He was also a member of The Monarchist League of Canada and Royal Canadian Legion No. 3. At the time of his death Bob was an honourary Vestryman at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Robert Coates died on March 10, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buriedat Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Robert Neilson was born on June 15, 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came to Canada with his family in October 1919. They settled briefly in Manor, SK before moving to Brandon, MB in 1920. After high school, Bob worked at Yaeger's Furs and was promoted to general manager. Bob Robert married Margaret McComb (1919-2001) on June 19, 1944 and together they had two daughters, Jean and Linda. From 1969-1975, Bob and Marg owned Eve's Gift Shop, and after the store was sold, they were caretakers at Princess Park and Towers until retiring in 1979. They continued to live at Princess Towers for several years, before moving to Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. Bob and Marg loved spending time at Waskesiu, Clear Lake, and later at Killarney. He was an active member of the Eastern Star, Shriners, Central United Church, K-40, Kinsmen and YMCA, as well as a long time volunteer at Prairie Oasis. Robert Neilson died on August 3, 2006 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Smith was born on March 25, 1901 at Madford-Ingelow, MB. He attended Matheson school and farmed in the Ingelow district. The family farm, 2-12-17, was sold in 1951, and Robert moved to Winnipeg where he was employed with the International Harvester Company and Triange Auto Supply. Robert met Martha Buchanon Thorburn (1917-2010) when they were both Scout leaders and actively involved with Chalmers United Church in Winnipeg. The couple married in 1955, and together they had one son, Alexander. Robert and Martha retired in 1971, and moved to Douglas, MB. Robert Smith died on November 30, 1983 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Robert Strath was born on December 28, 1888 on the farm Mains of Elrich at Auchnagatt, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He attended school in Scotland until he was 12, and then was a farm helper to age 18. He immigrated to Canada in 1907, originally travelling from St. John, NB to Brandon, MB. For the next several years, Bob moved around the provinces of Western Canada working on farms, the railway, in the bush, homesteading and mining. In 1913, he returned to Manitoba, where he began farming For the next fifty years, Bob would farm as a tenant or owner in the Hebron district, Carroll district and at Riverside. He retired to Brandon in 1963, then moved to Souris in 1965. Bob married Selina Gladys Rogers (1896-1975) on November 14, 1917 in Souris, MB and together they had five children: George, Russell, Jim, Roberta and Donald. Robert Strath died on March 17, 1987 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery.

Mary Roselle Carvey Boudreau (nee Smeltz) was born on May 9, 1909, the third child of George and Bella Schmelz. John George Schmelz was born on January 27, 1875 in West Lorne, Elgin County, ON. He came to Virden, MB in 1898 and the following year he purchased a quater section of land near Cromer. George married Christina Isabella Jewell (1878-1965) in 1904, and together they had eight children: Myrtle, Harvey, Rosella, Gordon, Grace, Irene, Lillian and Vera. Rose and Irene Lazenby were sisters. John George Schmelz died on November 10, 1957. He is buried at Reston Cemetery. Rose married Mark Carvey (1909-1974) on February 8, 1940 in Cromer, MB and together they had at least one son, Murray. The couple divorced in 1964. She later married George Boudreau. Roselle Carvey Boudreau died on March 7, 2005. She is buried at Reston Cemetery.

As part of the Westman Oral History Collection, this collection was accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1998. The original tapes from the Westman Oral History project were deposited in the Brandon Public Library. Copies of these originals were made by Margaret Pollex of the Brandon University Language Lab at the request of Eileen McFadden, University Archivist in the early 1990s. Francis Ruth Whitlaw (nee Boles) was born on December 27, 1906 in Deloraine, MB. Trained as a legal secretary, Ruth's first job was with the firm George & Watson. Following her marriage to John Alexander Whitlaw (1906-1989) on October 20, 1928, she was a housewife and mother to the couple's three sons: John, Richard and Robert. A life-long resident of Deloraine, Ruth helped develop community family histories in 1974 and the Deloraine Centennial History in 1980. She also active in the United Church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and serving as alternative organist. She won a Rose Bowl award in 1925 for her singing voice. Over the years, Ruth was active as a member of the Women's Institute and the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1958. Ruth Whitaw died on November 13, 1998 in Deloraine, MB. She is buried at Del-Win Cemetery.

Jane Sealia Cram (nee Main) was born on February 24, 1884 on the SW 1/4 of section 27-2-24 near Deloraine, MB. She attended Montefiore school. Sealia married Herbert S. Cram (1880s - 1955) on February 25, 1903 on her family farm. Together they had two sons, Kenneth and Herbert Cecil. The couple took up residence on a farm northwest of Goodlands, and aside from the period 1911-1915 when they lived in Deloraine, they farmed until 1944, when they they decided to rent out the farm due to poor health. In the summer of 1944, they ran a guest home at Clear Lake, before moving into Deloraine. Sealia was active in her church in both Goodlands and Deloraine. Following her husband's death, Sealia and her son Cecil built a house in Brandon, and Sealia lived there until returning to Deloraine in 1970. While a resident of Bren-Del-Win Lodge, she wrote a weekly column for the Deloraine Times and Star on happenings at the lodge. Sealia enjoyed sewing and embroidery. Sealia Cram died on April 1, 1984 in Deloraine, MB.

History / Biographical
Stanely Young (nee Smith) was born in 1890 in Sidney, Australia. Her family moved to the United States when she was 3 years old, and then to England in 1894, where they remained until coming to Canada for her health in 1906. He family, which included her parents and sister Gertrude settled in Kenton, MB, where they ran a boarding house and then took over the store. Stanely married Clive Young (1881?-1951) and together they had one son, Philip. Cleve ran a blacksmith shop in Kenton until his death. Stanely enjoyed musical activities and visiting family in Wininpeg. Stanely Young died in 1982. She is buried at Greenwood Cemetery.
