History / Biographical
Isabelle Burton Allan was born on May 11, 1902 on section 7-11-18 in the RM of Elton, north of Brandon, MB. Initially a public school teacher who taught in Kemnay, Oak Lake, Starbuck and in Brandon at David Livingstone School, Isabelle stayed home after her marriage to Frederick John Kingsley "Fred" Heeney (1900-2003) on October 21, 1931. The couple had two children: Dennis and Margaret. Following Fred's retirement, the couple moved to Brandon. Isabelle was active in both community and curch organizations, taking a special interest in the 4-H Club and the Daly House Museum. Isabelle Heeney died on June 2, 1996 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Frederick John Kingsley "Fred" Heeney was born on August 15, 1900 in Danford Lake, Quebec. The family left Quebec in 1906, and moved to Girvin, SK, then relocated to section 23-11-19 in the RM of Elton. Fred farmed section 29-11-19 at Forrest, MB until retiring in 1965. Isabelle Burton Allan was born on May 11, 1902 on section 7-11-18 in the RM of Elton, north of Brandon, MB. Harry Mummery was born on August 26, 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. Harry arrived in Canada in 1898 and lived in Hamilton, Woodstock, Toronto, before the family moved to Brandon, MB in 1903; for many years he lived at 17 Lorne Avenue East. He and his wife Lena (nee Anderson) had nine children: Gordon, William, James, Donna, Grace, Helen, Patricia, Beverley and Enid. Outside the sporting world Harry worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway as a locomotive fireman and an engineer. Harry played professional Hockey in the National Hockey League for the Toronto Arenas, Quebec Bulldogs, Montreal Canadians and Hamilton Tigers. He played hockey with many of the great players such as Pat Moran, Joe Hall, Joe Malone, Billy Creighton, Jeff Malone, Rusty Crawford, Tommy Smith, Mike Quinn, Jack Adams, Reg Noble, Al Skinner, and Cy Didenny. Playing for the Montreal Canadiens he won the Stanley Cup. Harry Mummery died December 9, 1945. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery. Walter “Bump” Mummery was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 10, 1893 and moved with his family to Canada, settling in Brandon, MB in 1903. Walter was employed as a locomotive engineer with the CPR for 46 years, retiring in 1955. He and his wife Myrtle (nee Ramsden) had three sons: Walter, Reginald and Kenneth. Mummery played professional hockey with the Quebec Bulldogs (1913-1918) and with the Dominion Hockey Club, Edmonton (1920-1923). Walter Mummery died suddenly on March 30, 1974, in Chicago. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery. Reg Mummery (1920-1983) is the nephew of Harry Mummery and the son of Walter Mummery. Lillian Mummery (1901-1994) is the sister of Harry and Walter Mummery.

Lillian Helen Lawson (nee Arnold) was born in 1902 in Shoal Lake, MB. She took her schooling at Shoal Lake and then attended Normal School in Brandon, receiving a 2nd class certificate. She taught first at Plumas, then Briercrest in Saskatchwean, and then for six years in Hamiota. She resigned to marry Delmar James Lawson (1899-1973) on August 18, 1926. Together they had two sons, Arnold and John. Lillian was active in St. Paul's Anglican Church as a Sunday School teacher, organist an a life member of the ACW. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a longtime director of the Agricultural Society. Lillian enjoyed curling, golfing and bridge, and took pleasure in art and the playing the piano. She is listed as a Memorable Manitoban on the Manitoba Historical Society website. Lillian Lawson died on February 9, 1996 in Shoal Lake, MB. She is buried at Shoal Lake Cemetery.

James Gilmour was born on December 4, 1910 at Griswold, MB. In 1936, he moved with his family to the Forrest District where he worked on the McPhail farm. In 1938, he went to Norway House where he and his twin brother Wesley were on the staff at the Residential School. Isabel Marjory Forsyth was born on January 25, 1917 in the farm home south of Pipestone, MB. After graduating from high school, Isabel attended the Women's Institute Course in Deloraine for dressmaking and cooking, where she learned skills she used for the rest of her life. In 1939, Isabel travelled to Norway House with a group of teachers, and that is where she met Jim Gilmour. Jim joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, and on November 7 of the same year he and Isabel were married. Following the marriage, the couple were stationed in Lethbridge, AB and then Mossbank, SK where Jim was a flight instructor. At the end of the war, the Gilmours moved to Pipestone where Jim was manager of the Co-op store. In 1948, they moved to join Jim's brother Hughie on the farm in the Forrest district. During his farming years, Jim was active in Forrest United Church, the rink board, the Pool Elevator board and the School board. He loved to garden, curl and visit. Isabel enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and entertaining. She was involved in community activities including the United Church and as a 4-H leader for 17 years, and enjoyed curling and baseball. She also sketched and painted. Jim and Isabel moved to Brandon in 1982, where they enjoyed bowling, bridge playing and square dancing. Isabel was also associated with "The Writer's Circle." In 2000, the couple moved to Virden to the Evergreen Place to be closer to family. Jim spent the last year of his life in the Sherwood Home in Virden. Together the Gilmours had three daughters: Carol Anne, Joan and Lynne. James Gilmour died on March 20, 2003 in Virden, MB. Isabel Gilmour died on September 5, 2007 in Virden, MB. They are both buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Gordon Alexander Mooney was born on July 31, 1905 in the RM of Wallace. He farmed in the Woodnorth area until 1966, then retired to Virden, MB. In addition to farming, Gordon was reeve of the RM of Pipestone from 1949-1951. In retirement he did volunteer work, acted as a caretaker of public buildings and was assistant to the Trustee of Bankruptcy. Gordon married Sarah Ellen Cook (1903-1931) on December 31, 1929. Ellen died while giving birth to their son, Glenn Edward. Gordon married Elizabeth Muir Torrance (1910-1985) on October 1, 1938, and together they had a daughter, Diane Elizabeth. Gordon Mooney died on August 31, 1987 in Virden, MB. He is buried at Virden Cemetery.

William Gordon Patterson was born on January 19, 1901 on 11-7-18 in the Chesley district. He farmed the home farm from 1947 to 1963, then retired to Wawanesa. Gordon married Hannah Jane Bryce (1906-1984) in April 1958. They had no children. Gordon Patterson died on February 22, 1988 in Wawanesa, MB. He is buried at the Patterson family cemetery.

Gordon Hayes Chalmers was born on September 30, 1893 at Hayfield, MB. In 1903, he came to Brandon. Edna Pearl Smyth was born on July 27, 1900 near Breckenridge Station in the county of Eardley, Quebec. She came west with her parents in 1902 to Carlyle, SK. In 1919, Edna came to Brandon, MB, wherer she took business training and worked as a housekeeper. Edna married Gordon in 1926, and together they raised five children - Jean, Harold, Evelyn, Allen and Dorothy - while farming in the Brandon district at Grand Valley. They retired from farming in 1968, and moved into Brandon. Gordon was a life member of St. Paul's Church and later of Central United Church, where he served as an elder and usher for many years. He was also a long time trustee of the Grand Valley School and served on the Brandon Fair Board.. Edna was also active in the church, where she was a member of the UCW. Gordon Chalmers died on October 14, 1982 in Brandon, MB. Edna Chalmers died on February 7, 1987 in Brandon, MB. They are both buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Roy Gordon Coates was born on July 23, 1920 in Brandon, MB. He attended King George, Earl Haig and Central schools in the city. Following school, he began a career with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1939. Due to illness he was forced to retire in 1979. Roy married Thelma Cunningham (1922-1949) in 1942. In 1952, he married Norma Jean Orser (1932-?) in Souris, MB and together they had a daughter, Brenda Colleen. Roy was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, Local 1113, the Orange Lodge, Sons of Ulster No. 1512, St. Paul's United Church, and later First Presbyterian Church where he served as superindent of Sunday school. He enjoyed gof, fishing and music. In retirment he became active with the Hillcrest Adult Day Club. Roy Coates died on July 12, 1985 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

John Dick Vickers was born on September 12, 1903 at Straiton, Edinburgh, Scotland. He came to Canada in June 1910 with his family and they settled near Greenway, MB. John received his schooling in Scotland and at Zepher and Wolsely Schools near Greenway. He participated in the Agricultural Society fairs, was secretary-treasurer of the Greenway Community Hall and played violin at Greenway dances. John married Frances Margaret Girling on June 12, 1928 and together they had two children: Dorothy and Allan. The Vickers' farmed in the Greenway area until selling up in 1935 and moving to Brandon. John began employment with Central Refineries (Anglo Canadian Oils) in 1936, when the refinery in Brandon opened, and he remained there until his retirement in 1966. John's hobbies included fishing and gardening, and he and his wife enjoyed their retirement summers at the family cottage at Sandy Lake. John Vickers died on August 30, 2022 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Jacob Peter Krueger was born on March 14, 1927 near Oakville, MB. Jacob married Katherine Elizabeth "Kaye" Martens (1923-2022) on August 4, 1951, and together they had three sons: Donald, Robert and Edward. The couple farmed at Carnegie. Jacob was involved in church leadership most of his life, was a member of the local Manitoba Pool Elevator Board, helped start the local chapter of the Canadian Food Grains Bank, volunteered on the Youth For Christ crisis phone line and reupholstered hundreds of chairs for the New To You Store for charity. Jacob Krueger died on December 30, 2019 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Zion United Church Cemetery.

Jacob Loewen was born on June 6, 1928 at Fannystelle, MB. Jake grew up in the Moore Park and Justice area of the province, attending schools in both communities. He graduated Grade 12 at Gretna and then attended teachers college in Winnipeg. Taking evening courses, he obtained his teachers certificate and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandon University in 1974. Jake began his teaching career in 1950 at Friedensrue, MB, then moved to Wingham (1951-1954), Brooke School, and Rivers Camp (1954-1971) before becoming principal in Broodkale in 1971. He left that postition in 1983 when he retired from teaching. Jake spent many summers crop inspecting and insurance adjusting, and farmed near Justice until 2006. He was a member of the Justice Mennonite Brethren Church and enjoyed singing, music, reading, crosswords and travelling North America. Jake married Margaret Schmidt on August 21, 1954. Together they had four children: Robert, Donald, Karen and Sandra. Jacob Loewen died on October 8, 2012 in Regina, SK. He is buried Sparling Cemetery.

History / Biographical
James David McKeand was born on April 11, 1925 on section 22-11-17 in the Douglas district of Manitoba. His early education was at Elton School. His grandfather was Robert McKeand (1848-1910) and his grandmother was Marion Johnstone (1860-1920). His father was David McKeand (1893-1979) and his mother was Mary Ethel Muirhead (1891-1963). David McKeand was inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1982. Jim married Eva Meryl Gillespie (b. 1927) on May 7, 1947 and together they had two dauthers: Elaine and Janet. The couple lived five miles north of Douglas and Jim attended an agricultural course at the Ag Centre in Brandon, graduating with a certificate. A pedigreed seed grower, Jim achieved his 25 year Long Service Certificate from the Canadian Seed Growers' Association. He also grew seed plots for foundation production. Outside of his farm, Jim served on the local school board, was a Manitoba Pool Elevators delegate, served as a director of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum, the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame and the Brandon Consumers Co-operative. He was also active in politics and his church. James McKeand died on January 31, 1987 in Winnipeg, MB. He is buried at Madford Cemetery.

James Miller Young was born on February 4, 1901 at Eden, MB. Jim married Verna Mary Osborne (1907-1997) on October 27, 1930. Together they had three children: Gerald, Patricia and Marjorie. Jim served as a school trustee for the Eden Consolidated School District and Beautiful Plains School Division for more than 30 years, including 15 years at Board Chairman. Jim retired in 1967, and the couple's retirement years were spent in Neepawa, where they were very active in their community. Jim's service was commemorated by JM Young School in 1970. James Young died in May 1986. He is buried at Neepawa Cemetery.

Jessie Ramsay Whyte (nee Inverarity) was born on September 27, 1912 at her parents home in Wellwood, MB. She received her education at Wellwood Consolidated School. Jessie married Thomas Whyte (1903-1993) in Brandon in 1933, and together they raised eight children: Yvonne, Joan, Jim, George, Lois, Jeanette, Heather, and Ferg. The family lived on the family farm "Whytewood" northeast of Wellwood. Jessie was known for her hospitality and her extensive correspondence with family. For many years she wrote columns in the Carberry News Express. An avid baseball fan, she played with the Wellwood Pats. Jessie was active in her community, holding leadership positions in the 4-H Club, was superintendent of the United Church Sunday School and was a member of both the United Church Women and the Presbyterian Womens Guild. In retirement she volunteered both in Carberry and Wellwood. Jessie Whyte died on October 8, 2000 in Winnipeg, MB.

James Cowan was born on May 26,1884 in Archie Municipality. He attended school at Le Claire and Cherry Grove and later farmed southeast of Mcauley, MB. Jim married Caroline (Lena) Willamina Johnson (1887-1965) in 1914, and together they had five children: Marjorie, Helen, Archibald, Elmer and Clarence. James Cowan died in December 1982. He is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Ada Joanne Titus (nee Graham) was born on January 24, 1940 in Wellwood, MB. Joanne married John (Jack) Sidney Titus (1918-1995) on October 7, 1961 in Wellwood. They had two children together - Michelle and Vonn - and also raised Jack's three children from his first marriage, Gerry, Karen and Kim. Jack served the Wellwood community as grocer and postmaster for 30 years, retiring in 1982. His father was postmaster before him. Joanne was a teacher, who began her career at Dempsey school, continued to Wellwood and Brookdale, and then spent 23 years at RJ Waugh School in Carberry. She retired in 1999. Joanne enjoyed travel, music and dance, and was a member of the Spud City Cloggers. She was an acitive community member within the Presbyterian Church, Guild and Choir, Wellwood Community Club, Trans Canada Trail, and the Carberry Public Library. Joanne Titus died on September 28, 2016 in Medicine Hat, AB.

John (Jack) Hunter was born on April 6, 1910 on the farm at Moline, MB to John Hunter and Florence Currie. A life-long farmer, Jack never married. He and his sister Dorothy remained on the farm, and looked after their parents and their aunt Molly. The siblings retired to Rapid City, MB in 1975. Jack Hunter died on June 3, 1991 in Minnedosa, MB. He is buried at Rapid City Cemetery.

John Hepworth was born on April 5, 1911 at Shoal Lake, MB. He attended Agricultural College at the University of Manitoba and farmed the Hepworth family farm near Menzie. John married Helen Douglas Morton (1915-2008) in 1935, and together they had two daughters, Heather and Jill. The family moved to Shoal Lake in 1945, and John continued farming from town until retiring in 1974. John was actve in the Shoal Lake community, participating in curling and golf, and referring minor hockey. He was a long-time member of the Boards of Directors of Shoal Lake Hospital and of Morley House; he was actively involved in the establishment of the latter, and the Lions Wing addition. Within St. Paul's Anglican Church, John served on the vestry and for a term as People's Warden. John Hepworth died on September 2, 1995 at Shoal Lake, MB. He is buried at Shoal Lake Cemetery.

John Oldcorn was born on December 29, 1910 in Victoria, BC. His family moved to Manitoba the following year and homesteaded at Cordova until 1918. John then lived in Neepawa (1918-1926) and Franklin (1926-1943), farming with his father before settling at Forrest in 1943. Marjorie Jean Robertson was born on January 7, 1923 in Minnedosa, MB. She attended school in Cordova and Mentmore before taking Grade 11 in Franklin. Following her education, Marj took a secretarial jb at the Manitoba Legislature. She met John Oldcorn at Franklin and they were married on November 23, 1943. Together they had two sons, Robert and Claude. During these years, Marj was active in the Forrest United Church and 4-H. She was also an avid curler and was a member of the Brandon Curling Club for many years. John Oldcorn died on October 24, 1986 at his home, RR5 Brandon, MB. Following his death Marj enjoyed relationships with Sanford Cochrane, and after his death, with Cliff Thompson. Marj left the farm in 2004, and moved to Parkview in Brandon, and then Fairview Personal Care Home. Marjorie Oldcorn died on September 4, 2010. John and Marjorie Oldcorn are buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
