The idea of the Keystone Centre was first mentioned in 1958, at a meeting of the board of directors of the Manitoba Winter Fair. The Manitoba Winter Fair wanted a new facility because the old Wheat City Arena had a leaking roof and a deteriorating west wall. The old facility also had limited space and the Winter Fair felt it needed more space for expansion. The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba also had problems with their facilities, such as old barns and poor display areas. The idea of the Keystone Centre was put on hold until 1969, when the boards of the Provincial Exhibition and the Manitoba Winter Fair joined together as the Provincial Exhibition Association of Manitoba and the Wheat City Arena was sold and demolished. The original estimate for the cost of the Keystone Centre facilities was $4.5 million and funding would be proportioned so that the federal and provincial governments would each put in one-third of the money, with the rest coming from local donations. The financial campaign for the Keystone Centre began in 1970, and construction began in November 1970. The grand opening of the Centre was in March 1973, and coincided with the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair of that year.

Fonds contains many folders full of correspondence, financial statements, meeting minutes and other documents relating to the development and construction of the Keystone Centre from 1970-1974, including those from the Keystone Executive Committee, as well as the Building Committee. Fonds also contains one folder that pertains to the Brandon Area Agricultural Development Survey from 1959. This folder contains the names and locations of all farmers in the Brandon area in 1959. The Brandon Area Agricultural Development Survey was created in 1959, in order to make farming in the Brandon area more profitable. The survey was aided by Doane Agricultural Service from St. Louis, Missouri, who had success creating agricultural development programs in the United States. Fonds also contains folders from the Provincial Exhibition with correspondence, pamphlets, estimates, and studies from the 1960's. There is also one folder belonging to the Manitoba Winter Fair, which contains correspondence and financial statements relating to the Wheat City Arena. Fonds also contains information pertaining to the proposals made in the 1960's, for the building of the Keystone Centre, as well as one folder about the Keystone campaign from 1970-73. There is also one folder about the opening of the Keystone Centre, which contains newspaper clippings and guest lists. Finally, the fonds contains information about a court case involving Albert Bobyk and Robert Stewart. Stewart was the project manager for the Building Committee and Bobyk worked on the Keystone Center. The fonds includes a report about the trial of the two men who were charged with fraud involving their work on the Keystone Centre.

Sub sub series consists of primary sources related to Canadian agriculure in Western Canada from the Great War to the Great Depression drawn from the National Archives of Canada and the Provincial Archives of Manitoba; primary sources including interviews conducted by Dr. Clark for his PhD thesis and subsequent book titled Brandon Politics and Politicians; and various papers - published and unpublished by Dr. Clark, a few of his students, and other academics. Sub sub series also contains seven copies of Brandon Politics and Politicians.

History / Biographical
Norma Laird's mother, Irene Clarke, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs John Clarke, who were pioneers in the Brandon region. Irene married David Black. Norma Laird was their daughter.

The records passed from Irene Clarke to her daughter Norma, who donated them to the McKee Archives on January 15, 2007.

Collection consists of two historical accounts, one of the beginnings of Grand Valley, and a second of the Grand Valley School (author(s) unknown); architectural plans for the brick residence of Mr. Clarke, Farmer on section 35, township 10, range 19, county of Brandon by W. Richard Marshall, Architect, Brandon (1892); a newspaper clipping from the Brandon Sun, June 8, 1972 depicting the fire that destroyed the Clarke residence; a Three-Quarter Century Farm Ownership certificate to M. Irene Black from the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba (1967); a certificate to John T. Clarke to honour the significant contribution the family had made to the founding of Brandon from the Brandon Centennial Board (1982); two Grand Valley honorary Goodwill Ambassador of Grand Valley certificates for Mrs. J. Clarke and Mr. D. Black (1970).
The first photograph is a 8x10 b&w mounted photo of the counsellers of the Municipality of Elton with names on the back (1912). The second photograph is a 5.5 x 3.5 b&w postcard of a bus of some kind with numerous men and women standing in front of it (ca. 1914).

The Archives anticipates the donation of a photograph of the Clarke residence from Norma Laird at a later date.
John C. Cousins was the son of Thomas Cousins (b. August 17, 1882 in Truro, Nova Scotia - d. March 5, 1914) and Mary Margaret Craig (b. April 14, 1824 - d. April 25, 1903). He married Eunice Eliza Nixon from London Township, County of Middlesex, Ontario. Together they had three children: Eunice M., Eric O. and Kathleen. J.C. Cousins was Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Daly from 1905 to 1910 and Assessor for the Town of Rivers from 1931-1938.

Scope and Content
This document is a rambling memoir of John C. Cousins' recollections of life in the Rural Municipality of Daly from the settlement era in the early 1880s, through to the 1940s. He touches on various themes, including: his family history; the activities of the R.M. of Daly and his role as Reeve; the history of school districts in the municipality (lists names of first teachers and early students); the history of churches in the municipality; tragedies in the municipality; lists members of the Council of the municipality for the years 1885-1946; and the devastating impact of the Spanish Influenza on Aboriginal people in the municipality.
In addition, the memoir includes documentary records, such as minutes and copies of letters. There are also many photographs of both events and individuals (virtually all of the photographs are labelled and names are provided). The memoir goes beyond a simple recounting of facts. Cousins is discursive and thoughtful, often making references to developments happening in other parts of North America and Canada. There is also a link to the Maritimes, from which his family originated.
James Cowan was born on May 26,1884 in Archie Municipality. He attended school at Le Claire and Cherry Grove and later farmed southeast of Mcauley, MB. Jim married Caroline (Lena) Willamina Johnson (1887-1965) in 1914, and together they had five children: Marjorie, Helen, Archibald, Elmer and Clarence. James Cowan died in December 1982. He is buried at Elkhorn Cemetery.

John Duncan McDonald was born on April 30, 1893 in Brandon, MB. He attended Winterton and Basswood schools. John married Margaret Emily Greer (1894-1980) in the Greer home in the Moline district in 1917. Together they had four children: Sadie Julia Elva, Robert James, John Elmer and Roy Peter. From 1919-1965, he farmed at Basswood, MB on SW 36-14-20. John McDonald died on January 11, 1989. He is buried at Basswood Cemetery.

Violet Leween Bernice Drysdale (nee Singleton) was born on March 27, 1925 on the farm at SW 32-16-14 in the RM of Landsdowne. She attended Glenholm School for grade school and Arden for high school. During her school years she enjoyed participating in festivals, concerts and sports, especially baseball. Leween taught as a permit teacher at Tobermore and Molesworth schools, and then afte a year at Normal School, she taught as a licensed teacher at Salisbury and Inkerman schools. Leween married Charles M Drysdale (1919-2004) on March 27, 1948. Together they had two children, Arleen and Morris. The couple farmed four miles east of Neepawa, MB for over fifty years. They had a mixed farm with grain, cattle, chickens and a large garden. Leween particularly enjoyed flowers and fruit trees. She was active in the community, belonging to the Union and Salisbury Women's Institute. She sang in the Inkerman United Church Choir, was a 4-H leader for many years, and entered her handiwork and garden produce in local fairs. Following a stroke in 1999, Leween lived at East View Lodge. Leween Drysdale died on February 6, 2005 in Neepawa, MB. She is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

Inscription: This picture was presented to the president of Brandon University, Dr. E. J. Accession 10-2003 contains the words and music for a musical "The Saga of Brandon" written by James Struthers, with music by Ken Gunning, and performed at the Brandon City Hall Auditorium February 28th, March 1st and 2nd 1951. Fonds also includes two playbills (one is signed by cast and crew members) advertising the production, an excerpt from the 1951 Brandon College Sickle describing the production and two press releases.
Accession 21-2007 contains a sound recording of excerpts of "Mr. College Spirit" by J. Struthers & K. Gunning, Chorus under direction of Lorne Watson. The recording was made at Radiolabs Institute Winnipeg. Mr. College Spirit was presented by the Brandon College Literary Board. The production was reviewed in the March 6, 1953 edition of the Quill.

The Humesville Women's Missionary Society began in 1885, in Humesville, Manitoba. Originally named the Humesville Women's Foreign Missionary Society, it was formed in connection with the Brandon Presbyterial Society as an auxiliary group. The reference to "Foreign" was later dropped from the organization's name. The HWMS was a non-profit group that raised money and gathered goods for the needy in the local area, Canada and around the world. The Forrest Women's Missionary Society was involved in much of the same work as the Humesville group. The membership of the two organizations was drawn from women residents in the Forrest/Humesville area.

Scope and Content
Fonds consists of financial records, newspaper clippings, and attendance lists for the Humesville and Forrest Women's Missionary Societies. Minutes for the Humesville Society cover the years 1885-1907; 1920-1940. The minutes of the Forrest Society cover the years 1928-1943. The attendance lists cover the years 1892 to 1904, 1906, 1907 and 1939 (Humesville) and 1928 to 1934, 1938 to 1941 (Forrest). Fonds also contains minutes of the Young Peoples' Society of Humesville 1910-1914, Forrest United Church Women's Association 1930-1946, and a pamphlet detailing the history of the Humesville/Forrest United Church.
John Stanley Henry was born April 19, 1909 on the home farm at Oak River, MB. He attended Oak River school through Grade 11, then took agriculture at the University of Manitoba for one year before having to withdraw due to financial hardship. Stan then returned to the farm, where he remained for the rest of his life. Stan married Jean Elizabeth McCrindle (1916-1992) in 1942. Together they had three children: Cameron, Lynn and Leslie.
As a farmer, Stan was a Select Seed Grower, and with his son Cam, developed the J.S. Henry and Son Seed business. In 1981, he was elected a Roberson Associate of the Canadian Seed Growers Association. In his early years, Stan also raised purebred Shorthorn cattle. Stan enjoyed restoring and refinishing furniture, gardening and loved sports, especially baseball and curling, including coaching. In the community, Stan was an active member of the United Church and was a trustee on the local board and then the Rolling River shcool board for 23 years. Stan Henry died on October 15, 1986 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Oak River Cemetery.

The editorial of Vol. 1, No. 1 (January 1944) of the Spectrum outlines the purpose of the magazine as follows: "to provide an outlet for creative writing which in itself will clarify and give substance to that Something [sic] for which the writer searches. It is also the earnest desire of the editors of the Spectrum that its articles and stories will prove stimulating and informative reading, reading that will be not only interesting but also thought-provoking, reading that will appealto both the Arts and the Science student."
It appears that only two editions of the Spectrum were ever published. The first edition contains creative writing pieces. The second edition, while containing a few creative writing pieces, also includes the graduating photos and names of the Class of 1944. This edition also contains class photos and names for the Classes of 1945, 1946, and 1947. It is assumed that the April 1944 edition of the Spectrum took the place of the Sickle, Brandon College's yearbook, as the latter publication was not produced in 1944.

These editions were originally accessioned by the McKee Archives in 1979. Sarah Persis Darrach's name appears on the cover of the April 1944 edition, so it may have belonged to her at some point. Additional custodial history is unknown.
