Scope and Content
Sub sub series consists of Marion MacPhail's school and teaching notebooks, as well as other materials she used during her teaching career, such as exercises, lessons, examinations, sources/ideas, class lists, and grades. Notebook subjects include: literature, practical chemistry, history, fiction, literary criticism, music, plays, art, poetical literature, pedagogy, english, psychology, a better B.U.Y.P./the Acts of the Apostles, history of education, grammar, memory gems, geography, health education, agriculture and elementary science. There are also files entitled: Christmas concert and miscellaneous Norwood Public School assignments/tests.
Notes
Part of Alexander MacPhail collection. In a number of cases, the workbooks/notebooks contain material on subjects other than the subject listed on the title page/file folder. Some of Marion's notebooks contain class lists with grades/lessons and exercises.

It includes copies of "The Manitoba School Trustee" (1956-1963); "The Manitoba Teacher (May-June 1942)"; "Canadian Agriculture and the War (1941-1942)"; Canadian Girls in Training (C.G.I.T.) pamphlets; "Answer Book for Basic Achievement Tests (Manitoba) grades 2-7"; "The Manitoba Arithmetic for Elementary Grade VI"; "Arithmetic Answers, grade VI"; newsclippings; "Nature Study Self-Taught: Junior Work-Book, grades III & IV (Manitoba schools)"; Manitoba Provincial Board of Health pamphlets; senior high school boys' physical training, grade X & XI; outline of arithmetic, grade VI & VII; and sheet music and lyrics for "We'll Never Let the Old Flag Fall."

Thomas James (T.J.) Pentland, son of John Pentland and Jane Finnegan, was born January 4, 1858. He died January 8, 1919 in Justice, MB. T.J. married Annie Isabel McVety on July 22, 1885 in High Bluff, MB. Together they had six children: John Alfred (Fred); Henry Herbert McVety (Harry); Annie Ethel; Eliza Evelyn; Thomas Elton Wesley (Wesley); and Mary Agnes Grace Isabel (Gracie).
Annie Isabel McVety was born at Seaforth, ON in 1859 and came to High Bluff, MB with her family in 1882. She died in October of 1938 in Justice, MB.
John Alfred (Fred) Pentland was born on July 5, 1886 in Douglas, MB. He was mortally wounded during the Passchedale campaign - 3rd battle of Ypres. He died on September 13, 1917 at Camiers Hospital, France.
Henry Herbert McVety (Harry) Pentland was born on November 10, 1887 in Douglas, MB. He died on June 26, 1948 in Brandon, MB. Harry married Mary Emma Irene (Irene) Fleming, daughter of John Jr. and Martha McLaughlin Fleming on November 22, 1913 in Brandon. Together they had three children: Harry Clare (Clare); Olive Eunice Irene (Eunice); and Shirley Margaret Marie.
Eliza Evelyn (Evelyn) Pentland was bon February 7, 1892 in Justice, MB. She died on May 28, 1986 in Brandon, MB. Evelyn married Norman Wallace Thompson on July 22, 1914 in Justice, MB. Together they had six children: Norman Cecil; Muriel Isabel; Norma Evelyn Jean; James Alfred; Marguerite Beryl; and Helen Elaine.

Part of the Alfred Angus Murray McPherson collection.
Métis fiction writer Beatrice Culleton Mosionier was born in the St. Boniface area of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1949 and after some time in Toronto, she moved back to Winnipeg. She attended George Brown College, 1970, and Banff School of Fine Arts, 1983. Aside from writing, Beatrice worked for a number of years at Pemmican Publications, a Manitoba publishing house. She has written works of fiction aimed at both adults and children.
Custodial History
Both drafts were sent to Sam Corrigan, Native Studies Department, Brandon University, by Greg Young-Ing, Managing Editor of Theytus Books in August 2001 for deposit in the Archives.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of the first draft (galley draft) and the final edit of "In the Shadow of Evil" by Beatrice Culleton Mosionier. It also includes a press release from Theytus Books Ltd. regarding the publication of the novel.
