Richard Harold "Doc" Hannah was born on July 9, 1916 in Wakaw, SK. He obtained his BA in biology at McMaster University before joining the staff at Brandon College in 1948, teaching botany and zoology. In 1962, after completing a MSc degree at the University of Minnesota, he returned to Brandon College and was appointed head of his department. He served as faculty advisor to the Athletic Board for twenty years and for over 30 years, Doc was a coach, manager, trainer and the inspiration behind the Braandon College Cap and Brandon University Bobcat hockey teams. It was his involvement with College athletics that led to the nickname "Doc." When he retired in 1981, he was granted the title of Professor Emeritus. In 1993, Doc was inducted into the Brandon University Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall of Fame.
Doc married Reta Bernice (1914-2005) and they had three children: Richard, Sharon and Patrick. Doc was a member of the AF and AM (Tweed Lodge No. 113), the Royal Order of Scotland and Khartum Temple Shrine. He served as Grand Master of Manitoba (1984-1985). Richard Hannah died on September 6, 1990 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Marion Ferguson (nee Patterson) was born April 29, 1911 in Brandon, MB. She took her early education at Brandon before completing nurses training at St Boniface Hospital Winnipeg (1929-1932). Following graduation she worked as a private nurse, then in 1936 did post graduate studies in psychiatry at the Brandon Mental Hospital. In 1936, Marion took a position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Particularly interested in neurology and stomach research, she took additional training and worked as a nurse at the University of Minnesota.
In 1940, she applied at a recruiting centre and joined the RCAF as a nursing sister in uniform. She was posted in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, then established a hospital at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for the Fleet Air Arm before being posted overseas. She worked with Italian Prisoners of War before being moved to the special burn hospital in East Grinstead, England.
After the Second World War, Marion returned to Brandon, where she became part of the teaching unit at Brandon General Hospital and then worked on the children's ward during the polio epidemic. Next, she became the Medical Surgical Supervisor at the Brandon Mental Hospital, then an administrator for the same institution. Marion then taught psyciatry at the Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) for eleven years and helped establish the policy for a two-year training program for registered nurses. She retired in June 1974.
Marion married John Reid "Jock" Ferguson (1907-1986) in 1950. The couple had three children - Mary, Jessica and Robert - while also raising John's four children from his first marriage.
Marion was active in community work, especially with the Royal Canadian Legion. She was the first female president of the local Legion, Branch No. 3 (1971), and worked tirelessly with veterans and their families. For her dedication to the needs of vetrans and their families, Marion was given six different medals from the Royal Canadian Legion. In addition to her work with the Legion, Marion was also the spokesperson for the small community of northeast Brandon and was part of the group that built the Green Acres senior citizens' home. Marion Ferguson died on May 21, 1993 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Sub sub series consists of Marion MacPhail's school and teaching notebooks, as well as other materials she used during her teaching career, such as exercises, lessons, examinations, sources/ideas, class lists, and grades. Notebook subjects include: literature, practical chemistry, history, fiction, literary criticism, music, plays, art, poetical literature, pedagogy, english, psychology, a better B.U.Y.P./the Acts of the Apostles, history of education, grammar, memory gems, geography, health education, agriculture and elementary science. There are also files entitled: Christmas concert and miscellaneous Norwood Public School assignments/tests.

Part of Alexander MacPhail collection. In a number of cases, the workbooks/notebooks contain material on subjects other than the subject listed on the title page/file folder. Some of Marion's notebooks contain class lists with grades/lessons and exercises.

Marion Margaret Hales Doig was the only child of B.J. Hales. She died in Brandon on June 8, 1961.

Fonds contians issues of two periodocals, "Northern Review" (1949-51), which reviews contemporary Canadian literature, and "The Keystone Province" (1941-45), a primarily economic look at Manitoba.
The condition of the books varies from very good to poor. Physical condition notes have been made on the inventory.
History / Biographical
Florence Marion Stone was born of Swedish parents, Freda and Ernest Peterson, in Saskatchewan in 1921 and adopted by Dr. and Mrs. Stone when her birth parents died early in her life. Marion graduated from high school when she was fifteen and she went on to obtain a B. A. degree from Brandon College in 1940. She served with the Royal Canadian Air Force Women's Division in England during the Second World War.
Following the war, Marion achieved her teacher training certificate and then spent most of her long career teaching English at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in Vancouver, BC. Throughout her life, Marion was very active in the Anglican Church. She also associated with the Swedish community, attending the Lucia pageant every year.
Marion Stone passed away at the Vancouver General Hospital on December 1, 2003 at the age of 82.

The books in this collection were donated to the McKee Archives in September 2003 by Marion Stone. Prior to this time, the books had been a part of her private collection in Vancouver.

Lynn Shier was born November 28, 1942 in London, Ontario to Anglo-Saxon Protestant parents. Her father and mother were of German and English-Dutch descent, respectfully. On her father’s side, Lynn’s ancestors emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1749. Both of her parents were born and raised in Iowa, where they also married in 1929. Following her parent’s marriage, the couple moved to London, Ontario in 1928 where her father was employed as a professor at the University of Western Ontario. Lynn resided in London, Ontario with her parents for sixteen years before relocating to Santa Barbara, California. After residing in California for three years, Lynn came back to London, Ontario in order to attend the University of Western Ontario. During her time at the University, Lynn met her future-husband Allan Shier. Allan Shier was born to parents of German and Scotch descent. His father’s ancestors immigrated to North America during the late 1740s or early 1750s from roughly the same region of Germany as Lynn’s ancestors.
Lynn and Allan were married in 1963. Following the wedding, the couple remained in Ontario for two years, one year of which was spent in Toronto. The couple later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they lived for two years before travelling to Souris, Manitoba. While in Souris, Manitoba Allan worked as a district city planner. Lynn and Allan remained in Souris, Manitoba for four years after which they relocated to Brandon, Manitoba in 1970, where Allan continued to work as a district city planner for the city and Southwestern Manitoba. During their married life, Lynn worked as a household interviewer, and as a secretary for the Daly House Museum and the Assiniboine Historical Society while raising the couple’s children, two girls and a boy. Lynn was also very active in the Brandon community.

The interviewee is Lynn Shier, the interviewer is Effie McPhail and the interview was conducted as part of the Voices of Yesteryear project. The tape contains details about the arrival of the first Europeans to Canada during the late sixteen-and early seventeenth-centuries, as well as more precise information concerning the history of the French and English fur trade within the Brandon, MB area.

Gladys Elizabeth Ward (nee Cartwright) was born August 16, 1909 in Dauphin, MB. In 1911 her family relocated to Winnipegosis, MB. Gladys worked as a school teacher in Winnipegosis from 1929-1931.
In 1931 Gladys married William Edward Ward (1910-1964), a fisherman and mechanic in Winnipegosis, MB. After her marriage, Gladys left her job as a fulltime school teacher to work part time as a substitute teacher, a cook in a girls camp and a full time housewife until 1933. In 1934, Gladys’ only child, Mervyn Ward was born. She would not find out until many years later that her only child was born at the height of her tuberculosis infection. Gladys returned to teaching full time in 1938, until she was forced to resign due to illness in 1939.
Due to her tuberculosis illness Gladys was forced to relocate from Winnipegosis to Ninette, MB in 1941, where she lived in the Sanatorium as a patient until 1947. In 1945, Gladys was well enough to work part time as a cook in the Sanatorium kitchen. After her release from the Sanatorium in 1947, Gladys continued to live in Ninette with her husband and son, continuing to work at the Sanatorium as an assistant purchasing agent under the direction of Bill Stewart. After Stewart’s retirement in 1963, Gladys took over as the purchasing agent for the Sanatorium until her own retirement in 1974.
After her retirement from the Sanatorium, Gladys cared for her elderly father, mother, and her older brother who was an epileptic, all of whom resided with her in her home in Ninette. Gladys Elizabeth Ward died in Killarney, MB on January 5, 1990. She is buried at Ninette Cemetery.

Item is an audiocassette tape containing an interview with Gladys Ward about her experience as a tuberculosis patient and staff member at the Ninette Sanatorium. Interviewer is Dr. DB Stewart. The item covers biographical information and personal data, including how she contracted tuberculosis. The recording documents Gladys’ recollection of her initial arrival at the Sanatorium and her first year of “chasing the cure.” Gladys explores the hardships of being a patient at the Sanatorium. Moreover, the interview documents detailed medical terminology associated with tuberculosis and treatments used by doctors at the Sanatorium during the 1940s. In addition, the interview outlines names of Sanatorium employees as well as outlines the permanence and impermanence of friendships among patients. It also documents Gladys’ recovery and movement from patient to staff member at the sanatorium. Lastly, the recording covers the conversion of the institution to the Pelican Lake Training Centre.
