Harry Edwin Brindle was born on June 13, 1913 in Souris, MB. Educated in Souris, Harry worked for Safeway from 1933-1939. He married Isabel Mary Barlow (1915-2009) on May 2, 1938. The couple had two children: Geraldine and Larry. Shortly after the wedding, the family moved to Estevan, Regina and then to Fort William, where Harry worked for Canada Car Foundry. The family then briefly moved to Montreal and then to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, Harry joined the army and served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. While in the Service, Harry attended radio school in Winnipeg, then used his Service gratuity to continue his education. Following the Second World War, the family moved back to Souris, and Harry opened an appliance store for Box's Hardware called The Electric Shop. A fire in 1951, forced a move to Box's Hardware and then in 1957, Harry opened his own radio and TV repair shop. Harry sold Brindle's Radio and TV in 1976 and retired. Passionate about music, Harry spent his free time playting in dance bands, the city band and a German band, as well as on many occasions in the community. He also served on the committees that built the Legion Club and the swimming pool. Harry Brindle died on January 5, 2012 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
Carter Hawkins Brindle was born in Blackburn, England on November 23, 1867. He came to Canada with his family in 1884, and they homesteaded near Virden, MB before moving to Souris, MB in 1887. Until 1892, Carter was employed as a stage coach driver on the Plum Creek* Trail between Souris and Brandon. By 1900, he was working as a sign painter, carpenter, architect and builder in Souris. Carter desinged many of the brick commercial buildings along Crescent Avenue. A member of the Manitoba Association of Architects after 1910, Carter continued to practice until the late 1930s. Carter married Ida Lora Lawson (1879-1959) on June 30, 1903. Together they had five children: Susie Marion Gwendoline, Hattie Martha, Harry Edwin, Edith and Ida. Carter Brindle died on July 23, 1957 in Souris, MB. He is buried at Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
*Plum Creek is the old name for what is now Souris, MB. The Plum Creek stage travelled between Brandon and Plum Creek daily from approximately 1886-1892.

Harry Wilson Miller was born on January 9, 1905 on NW 2-12-18 at Justice, MB. He attended school locally until he was old enough to take up farming with his father. Harry married Grace Ellen Cox (1918-2003) on November 14, 1934 and together they had three children: Donna, Garry and Lorna. The Millers farmed in the Justice area until the early 1970s, when they began the process of retiring. In 1990, Harry and Grace moved to Brandon. Harry was the leader of the Justice 4-H Seed Club for over 20 years, was a long-time member of the Justice United Church board and served on the Justice Community Club. He also called many square dances and enjoyed dancing. Harry Miller died on July 16, 1997 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Harry "Hap" Fraser was born in Brandon, Manitoba on January 15, 1919. On February 12, 1945, he married Muriel Coleman of Virden. Fraser served in the RCAF during World War II, returning to Brandon in 1946. Harry Fraser was employed by Coca-Cola, Nutty Cup Candy Company and the Codville Company. Following a brief stint as manager of the North Hill IGA, Harry Fraser built an IGA grocery store on Victoria Avenue West. He operated this store until his retirement in 1972. Harry Fraser was a member of the Brandon Lion's Club from 1952 until his death. He also served a term on Brandon City Council. He passed away at his home in Brandon on April 2, 1991.
Custodial History
This fonds came into the possession of Fred McGuinness, a Brandon writer and acquaintance of Hap Fraser's, after Fraser's death. McGuinness donated it to the McKee Archives in 1998.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of a single scrapbook containing articles and pictures of various personalities and events from the world of sports during the 1920s and 1930s. Hockey, baseball, basketball, wrestling, boxing, body building, bike racing, boat racing, track and field, swimming, diving, football, rugby, rifle shooting, tennis, bowling, horse racing, golf, soccer, and fishing are all featured in the scrapbook. The articles and pictures feature both local and internationally known sports figures. Fonds also contains pictures of celebrities, royalty, prominent military figures, inventors, and beauty queens from the same era.
Thomas James (T.J.) Pentland, son of John Pentland and Jane Finnegan, was born January 4, 1858. He died January 8, 1919 in Justice, MB. T.J. married Annie Isabel McVety on July 22, 1885 in High Bluff, MB. Together they had six children: John Alfred (Fred); Henry Herbert McVety (Harry); Annie Ethel; Eliza Evelyn; Thomas Elton Wesley (Wesley); and Mary Agnes Grace Isabel (Gracie).
Annie Isabel McVety was born at Seaforth, ON in 1859 and came to High Bluff, MB with her family in 1882. She died in October of 1938 in Justice, MB.
John Alfred (Fred) Pentland was born on July 5, 1886 in Douglas, MB. He was mortally wounded during the Passchedale campaign - 3rd battle of Ypres. He died on September 13, 1917 at Camiers Hospital, France.
Henry Herbert McVety (Harry) Pentland was born on November 10, 1887 in Douglas, MB. He died on June 26, 1948 in Brandon, MB. Harry married Mary Emma Irene (Irene) Fleming, daughter of John Jr. and Martha McLaughlin Fleming on November 22, 1913 in Brandon. Together they had three children: Harry Clare (Clare); Olive Eunice Irene (Eunice); and Shirley Margaret Marie.
Eliza Evelyn (Evelyn) Pentland was bon February 7, 1892 in Justice, MB. She died on May 28, 1986 in Brandon, MB. Evelyn married Norman Wallace Thompson on July 22, 1914 in Justice, MB. Together they had six children: Norman Cecil; Muriel Isabel; Norma Evelyn Jean; James Alfred; Marguerite Beryl; and Helen Elaine.

Benjamin J. Hales was born in Peterborough, Ontario on November 24, 1868. Hales lived in Peterborough until attending the University of Toronto, where he graduated in 1894. In 1897, Hales travelled west to teach at Broadview, North West Territories. He moved to McGregor, Manitoba in 1899, where he was Principal of the school, and in 1902, he moved to Hartney, Manitoba. Between 1907 and 1911, Hales devoted his time to working for the provincial Normal School that offered courses for prospective teachers in Portage La Prairie, Manitou, and Brandon. In 1911, the normal courses were established in Brandon and Hales moved to Brandon, where he resided for the rest of his life. Hales acted as the Principal of the Brandon Normal School from 1912 until his retirement in 1938. B.J. Hales married Elizabeth Lewis of Peterborough, who died in 1942. The couple had one daughter Marion Hales Doig. B.J. Hales was a well-known naturalist and author of several texts dealing with prairie flora and fauna. Hales also built a museum of Manitoban flora and fauna in the Normal School. Hales was an alderman on Brandon City Council from 1920 to 1923, and served as the chairman of the city's Parks Board from 1937 until his death in 1945. Hales was twice the president of the Western Manitoba Teacher's Association, and once the head of the Manitoba Educational Association. B.J. Hales was also a member of the First United Church and served on its board. He died on December 23, 1945 at his home in Brandon.

Fonds includes three books written by B.J. Hales, titled, "Selected Western Flora: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta"(1925); "Prairie Birds"(1927); and "Forests and Trees"(1925), all published in Toronto by The MacMillan Company of Canada. The fonds also includes two books of field notes concerning specimens held in the Brandon Normal School Museum, as well as a list of birds in the Atkinson Collection also located at the Brandon Normal School Museum.
Alva Redell "Alvie" Spafford was born on March 15, 1891 at Enterprise, MB. He attended school at Victoria Lake and Henderson schools. Alvie left Enterprise in 1902, and moved to Bannerman, MB, where he farmed until 1936. He later moved to Boissevain, where he worked as a Rawleigh salesman, and then in 1942, he moved to Brandon and was employed as a conductor for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) until his retirement. Alvie married Frances Ethel Harrison (1895-1979) and they had three children: Carl, Edna and Raymond. Alvie Spafford died on August 25, 1985 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Killarney and District Cemetery.

While with CN, he was an active member of the Brotherhood of Local Engineers and Firemen No. 788 of Brandon. He served as an alderman in Brandon from 1928 to 1945. In 1932, Harry ran in the Manitoba by-election for Brandon as an Independent Labour candidate and lost to the Conservative member George Dinsdale. In 1952, Harry ran as a Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member in the provincial election and lost to Conservative party representative Reg Lissaman. Harry Spafford passed away in Burnaby, BC, and is interred in the Ocean View Cemetery. (Source: see obituary in McG 4.1 File 66)
Alva/Alvery/"Alvie" Reddell/Riddell/Ridall Spafford (b. 15 Mar 1891, d. 23 Aug 1985) was born in Enterprise, Manitoba, in the R.M. of Turtle Mountain. In 1911, he married Francis Ethel Harrison (d. 1979) in Killarney and had three children. Alvie farmed in Bannerman from 1902 to 1936, after which he moved to Boissevain to work as a Rawleigh salesman. In 1942, the family moved to Brandon where Alvie worked as a conductor with the CNR until his retirement. Alva Spafford passed away at the age of 94 at the Brandon General Hospital.
