Lewis Mathie was born November 8, 1889 in Carberry, MB. His family moved to Brandon in 1890. After completing schooling at Central and Park schools, he apprenticed as a printer with his uncle, Walpole Murdoch, publisher of the Hartney Star. After brief stints with a printing plant and The Brandon Times, Mathie joined the staff of The Brandon Sun as a printer. In 1916, Mathie enlisted in the 181st (Brandon) Battalion and served overseas as a signaler with the 52nd (Port Arthur) Regiment. He returned to Brandon after his discharge in 1919, and re-joined the staff of The Brandon Sun. Beginning in 1939, Mathie was foreman of the composing room. Although he retired in 1956, he continued to work part-time for the paper from 1956-1972. Mathie married Rosetta Mills (1903-1995) in 1926, and together they had two sons: Thomas and Frank. He was a founding member of Local 700 of the ITU. Lewis Mathie died on March 13, 1985 in Brandon, MB.

Peter Alexander (P.A.) Alex McPhail was born on July 11, 1897 in the RM of Elton. Raised on the family farm in Forrest, MB, he was the eldest son of Archie and Mary McPhail who came to Manitoba from Ontario. Alex took over the farm in 1915, and farmed there until 1949, when he and his family moved to Brandon. During the First World War, Alex was a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He married Effie Irene Weir (1900-1999) in 1933 and together they raised four children: Ronald, Malcolm, Archie and Donna. Effie and Alex were both active members of their community. Alex was especially involved in the agricultural community and won many prizes over the years for his livestock. From 1954-1965, Alex was the General Manager for the Provincial Exhibition Association of Manitoba and the Manitoba Winter Fair. He also served one term as the president of the Canadian Association of Exhibitions. Additionally, Alex was on the Brandon General Hospital board, the Brandon College board, and was a member of the Kiwanis and Shriners clubs. He was also involved in local sports. Both Alex and Effie McPhail were active members of the United Church. Alex McPhail died on June 28, 1989 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Humesville Cemetery.

Winifred Irene Wasylyshyn (nee Stevens) was born on September 22, 1923 at Deloraine, MB. The daughter of Fletcher and Grace Stevens, the family had a long tradition of camping at Lake Metigoshe going back to Irene's paternal grandparents, who began camping there in 1908. Irene, who was a florist, married Jake Wasylyshyn (1916-?) on May 19, 1956. They had one daughter, Donna. Irene Wasylyshyn died on March 25, 2005 in Deloraine, MB.

Item is an audiocassette tape containing an interview with Irene Wasylyshyn about the development of Lake Metigoshe. Spanning the international border into North Dakota, Lake Metigoshe is twenty miles south of Deloraine and part of a collection of lakes in the Turtle Mountains. Lake Metigoshe became the hub of a cluster of cottage developments, which boasted a local store with grocery and café services, golf course, and other recreational facilities over the years. In her interview Irene relates stories of fishing, boat rides, campfires and sing songs with neighbors who became long term family friends. She described the establishment of different local stores over the years, who owned them or worked there and for how long. She details the growth of the different cottage developments, along with both Investment and Improvement Associations, which worked to balance the growth. Through the entire interview Irene describs her love for the beauty and serenity of the lake itself and how much it came to mean to generations of her family. Interviewer is Eva Cassils.

Laurence Overton "Laurie" East was born in the municipality of Odanah on the west half of 29-13-18, on March 13, 1911. He attended Tremaine and Roseneath schools and worked on the family farm, eventually leaving school to work due to his father's ill health and then taking over the operation in 1936, after his father died. Laurie retired from farming in 1976. Laurie married Bernice McDonald (1916-2006), a teacher, on July 4, 1942. They had no children. Laurie's hobbies were music, dancing and travel; he took part in local entertainment and taught square dancing classes. He was a member of the Hunterville United Church, serving on the board and volunteering as Sunday School Superintendent or teacher. In the 1940s, Laurie was part of local commmittees to secure telephone and postal service. From 1970-1983, he was a member of Elton Municipal Council. Shortly after joining the council, Laurie was appointed as a representive to the library board; he joined representatives from Minnedosa and Minto councils, as there was support in the region for the organization and establishment of a regional library. Laurie East died on April 18, 2003 in Brandon, MB and is buried at the Rapid City Cemetery.

Maude Marie MacDonald (nee Evans) was born on May 23, 1910 in Indian River, Ontario. In 1913, her family moved to Manitoba, settling in the Brookdale area. She attended school in Brookdale and at Brandon College, graduating with a BA in 1930. After graduating from Normal School in Saskatoon, she taught at Justice, Brookdale, Brandon, Kemnay, Ochre River and Carberry, before retiring in 1971. Marie married George MacDonald (1913-1989), who she met while teaching in Ochre River, in June 1937. The couple had three children: Janet, Karen and Donald. In 1951, Marie and George bought Maxhame, a farm near Brookdale. She continued to live on the farm after George died. Marie loved gardening and reading, and in her later years, she enjoyed travelling. Marie MacDonald died on January 25, 1996 in Winnipeg, MB and is buried in Carberry Plains Cemetery.

Janet Mortimer Seward (nee Anderson) was born on May 5, 1898 at Crown Hill, near Barrie, ON. She graduated with her RN from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie in 1921. Coming to Brandon in 1927, she became a graduate of the first post-graduate class in pyschiatric nuring at the Brandon Mental Hospital. In 1929, she became superintendent of nurses at that same institution. She stepped down from her position when she married Ernest Seward (1877-1949), a widower, in 1934, but following her husband's death, she resumed her nursing career, finally retiring in 1966. The couple had no children. An active member of St. George's Anglican Church, she also volunteered for the Red Cross. Janet Seward died on June 14, 1991 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Mary Evelyne Conley (nee Dixon) was born on November 30, 1919 in Carievale, SK. She lived in Carievale until 1940, at which point she moved to Brandon, MB. In Brandon she received her nurses training, graduating as an RN in 1943, and then working at Brandon General Hospital (BGH). In 1945, she moved to Toronto where she continued working as a nurse and also married Murray Ross Conley (1919-1998) on April 21, 1945. The couple had three children: Judith, Sharon and Bradley. After a year in Toronto, Evelyne returned to Brandon to raise her family and work as a private nurse at BGH. She retired from Fairview Personal Care Home in 1971, to care for her son, who developed multiple sclerosis (MS) in his 20s. This experience precipitated Evelyne's involvement with the MS Society. Evelyne Conley died on September 3, 2013 in Brandon, MB. She is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Stewart David Trites was born on November 19, 1901 in Anaconda, BC, where his father was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Later that year the family moved back to New Brunswick. In his younger years, Stewart did farm and lumber work, and worked as a commercial traveller. In 1919, he entered Horton Academy in Wolfville, NS to begin formal education to become a minister. A graduate of Acadia University and the University of New Brunswick, Stewart was ordained to the Baptist Ministry in 1933. Pastorates in the Maritimes, Edmonton, Thunder Bay and Brandon followed. In 1976, he was inducted as Minister Emeritus of First Baptist Church, Brandon.
In retirement, he served as an interim minister in several churches across Canada. Stewart held two interim positions with the Baptist Union of Western Canada, Director of Home Mission and Director of Christian Education. He was instrumental in the building of Hobbs Manor in Brandon and served as chaplain for the Cape Breton Highlanders. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening and walking. He spent many hours stamp collecting and in creative writing; he published two books, including "Stories I Love Telling My Friends" (1995). Stewart married Gladys Frizzle (1897-1990) and they had one daughter, Judith. Following his wife's death, Stewart married Ellen Elizabeth Trites-Pollitt (1915-2007). Rev. Stewart Trites died on February 4, 1999 in Brandon, MB. He was interred at Hantsport, NS.

Verlie Sarah Arnott (nee Nay) was born on December 7, 1900 on her parents farm. She received her education at Bethel, Killarney Collegiate and Brandon Normal School. She taught for just over three years before her marriage to Merlin Hicks Arnott (1895-1966) in 1925. Following the marriage Verlie became a full-time homemaker and the couple raised three children: Lillian, Glenn and Jim. Verlie was a member of the Rowland and Killarney United Churches; she played the organ at the Rowland Church for many years and was an active member of the UCW. She resumed teaching in 1943 at Rowland, Farfield, Jacques, Fairburn and Medora schools. In addition to her passion for music, her creative activities included baking, knitting and crocheting. Verlie Arnott died on February 10, 2003 in Killarney, MB. She is buried at Killarney and District Cemetery.

William MacFarlane "Bill" Geiler was born on February 18, 1927 at Dauphin, MB. He came to live in Brandon when his father Felix formed Manitoba Motor Transit in September 1933. When his father passed away, Bill became President and General Manager of the company. He sold the business to Grey Goose Bus Line in 1969. Bill became a caretaker at Manitoba Public Insurance in 1978, retiring in 1992. Bill enjoyed, golfing, fishing and reading. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Kinsmen Club. Bill married Jacqueline June Roberts (1929-2020) on February 7, 1949, and together they had three children: Phil, Linda and Nancy. William Geiler died on June 6, 2001 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

William Sheridan was born on December 14, 1909 in Hamiota, MB. William lived in Hamiota until 1938, spent a year in Alberta and then served overseas with the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War. Up until 1939, William had been a handyman but while enlisted in the military he worked as service personnel. Following the war, William returned to the Hamiota district where he farmed until 1952. Moving to Brandon in 1964, he was then employed at CFB Shilo until retiring in 1974. William married Freda Josephine Fry (1913-1998) in Bexhill, England on August 6, 1942. The couple had four children: Terry, Michael, Carol and Kathy. William Sheridan died on April 7, 1983 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Andrew Frederick "Fred" Mutter was born on January 7, 1913 in Brandon, MB. He was educated in Brandon, including at Brandon College. From 1942-1945, Fred served with the RCAF overseas. Fred returned to Brandon after the war, where he joined the family run grocery store, Mutter Brothers. He continued to operate the business until deciding to close in April 1975. In 1986, the contents of the store were donated by the Assiniboine Historical Society to the Daly House Museum. Fred never married. Fred Mutter died on July 3, 1984 in Brandon, MB. He is buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery.

Albert Earl Henderson was born on September 29, 1898 in Boissevain, MB. He attended Caranton school, Boissevain high school and the University of Manitoba, where he studied agriculture. Earl married Alberta Mary Roe (1902-1977) on October 17, 1924, and the couple had three children: Douglas, Lois and Amy . He farmed in the Cranton district northwest of Boissevain until 1971, when he and his wife retired to town. Earl and Alberta were very active in lapidary. Their interest was sparked in 1954, after stopping at a rock shop in Montana on the way home from a holiday. The couple began turning stones into jewlery while Earl was still farming, first in their basement and then in a shop in the yard. They moved into making items out of plastics in the 1970s. Their rock shop was the first of its kind in Manitoba. Earl took an active part in church and community affairs. He served on the Caranton school board for many years, as Noble Grand of the IOOF, as a councillor for the RM of Morton from 1962-1971, and was a member of the original hospital board for 20 years. Earl was a member of the Beckoning Hills Activity Club, St. Paul's United Church, and enjoyed activities and friends at the Drop-In Centre. Earl Henderson died on February 17, 1986 in Folsom, California. Earl had been a winter resident of the Lost Dutchman Trailer Resort at Apache Junction, Arizona, and was visiting his niece in Folsom when the death occurred. He is buried at Boissevain and Morton Cemetery.

Alexander Birkett Mitchell was born on June 29, 1904 in Douglas, MB. Other than a few years spent in Spirit River, AB (1929-1933), he farmed in the Douglas district until retiring in 1959. Birkett married Edith Moss "Mossie" Noble (1910-1973) on September 30, 1938, and together they had one daughter, Gail. The couple moved to Brandon following Birkett's retirement from farming. Birkett moved to Lloydminster, AB in 1986, and it was there that he died on June 22, 1988. He is buried at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Andrew B. Pernal was born in Poland. He completed his BA at Assumption University, his MA at Windsor and his Ph.D. in Ottawa. From 1971 until 2008, he was a member of Brandon University's History Department. In 2000, he received an honourary doctorate from Zaporizhia State University in Ukraine, and following his retirement he was granted emeritus status at BU. Pernal was a member of the Parish Council of St. Hedwig's Parish, the Director of the Polish School in Brandon, and Chairman of the Polish Refugees Committee in Brandon. He and his wife Nan (nee Robertson) had a number of children, including Andrew, Stephen, Julia and Caroline. Following Pernal's retirement, the couple moved to Calgary, AB.

Susan Kent (nee Harvey) was born in 1853 in Strathroy, ON and on March 10, 1881, she married Arthur William Kent (1858-1926). The newlyweds quickly set out for Rapid City, MB, where they lived for a year, before moving to the Kenton district to homestead in 1882. Arthur Kent was considered the founder of the village of Kenton (1901). The couple had no children, but they did adopt a nephew, Arthur Alexander Wallace. Susan Kent died in 1934 and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery.

Agnes McQuarrie (nee Scott) was born on November 17,1889 at Maple Hill Farm at Oak Lake, MB. She grew up on the farm, receiving her early education at Sandhurt School, later attending Portage Collegiate for one year of Arts, before attending Portage Normal School (1908-1911). Agnes taught at Pleasant Plain School, Routledge and at Oakwood School. In 1917, she married John Beaton "Jack" McQuarrie (1888-1967). After their marriage, Agnes stayed home and took care of the couple's six children: Neil, Murray, Danny, Gwen, Margaret and Jean. Agnes McQuarrie died on May 30, 1990 in Virden, MB. She is buried at Oak Lake Cemetery.

Alexander Hector Black was born on August 31, 1901 in Oak River, MB. Alex lived in the Oak River area his entire life, farming until he retired in 1976. He married Blanche Edith Paddock (1905-1985) on October 14, 1936 and together they had four children: Frank, Margaret, Melvin and Eileen. The couple moved into Oak River in 1976, and Alex remained in the home until 1997. Alex was active in the community as a member of the church board, teasurer of the church, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a member of the school board and the Pool Elevator board, as well as a director of the Agricultural Society (1925-198?). Alex Black died on April 1, 1999 in Hamiota, MB. He is buried at Oak River Cemetery.

Alice May (nee Heal) was born August 13, 1910 in Strathclair, MB to Charles and Kristina Heal. Alice worked as a secretary and bookkeeper and then as a homemaker. She married Frank May (1901-1985) on November 16, 1932 and together they had two children: Frances and Arthur. The family moved to Strathclair in 1946. Alice May died on August 10, 2006 in Shoal Lake, MB. She is buried at Strathclair Muncipal Cemetery.

William Andrew "Andy" Graham was born on July 29, 1916 in the RM of North Cypress on section 14-10-15. He married Irene Ruth Caughill (1918-1979) on April 17, 1937, and together they had three children: Gwen, Betty and Joan. Andy and Ruth lived first in Carberry and then on NE 23-10-15W; Andy farmed, first in partnership with his father, and then later on his own when his father's health failed. After Ruth died, Andy married Florence (Reynolds) Elmhirst (1911-2000) in 1981. Andy Graham died in 1993.
